In this video, we're sharing a step-by-step guide on how we set up our 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk 4xe to be flat towed behind our motorhome.
We've traveled across the country for the past 3 years and recommend flat towing for a variety of reasons. The main reason is simplicity, it only takes us a few minutes to hook up and disconnect each time we move locations.

nice video. A trick I learned from towing was to turn the front wheels a small amount before exiting the Jeep. Then we check all the lights on the Jeep, turn signals, brake and running lights. When I start to drive my wife checks that the wheels are rolling and TURNING. If the steering wheel is locked the wheels will not turn. You need the front wheels to turn.

Hey guys! Great video. We have been using a Ready Brute Elite tow bar with integrated breaking in conjunction with the Blue Ox connectors. You just run a line from the brake pedal on the toad to the front and connect it to a lever on the tow bar that proportionally engages the braking action on the RV. So far, so good after 10K miles. It makes the setup easier and keeps us from carrying around that supplemental brake system you place in the floorboard.

Thanks for the information! We’ve been looking at that one and the Air Force One model for a permanent braking system to install in the Jeep. Would be easier than carrying it around with us at all times!

Park or in gear if manual, with transfer case in neutral. The drag of oil in transfer case will turn transmission shaft. On automatics there is nothing that will circulate or throw oil to keep bushings for output shaft oiled on automatics. In most manual trans the splash lube will not occur because the countershaft in trans is turned by input shaft from clutch. That spins only when engine turns it. There are some transverse engine transaxle models where the mainshaft rides in oil and will lube everything via splash. Some automatic transaxles also do this, but it is not universal. On these, the transmission is left in neutral, and anything left in the vehicle MUST be secured so that it would never be able to be loose and knock gear lever into Park or into gear for manual.

@@fuelyourwander I like it a lot. I did have the one you have in this video but felt it may have been dragging going down a long steep hill even with the coach brakes off. I think the AFO is easier on the flat tow hitch also.

Nice video. Thanks for keeping up with the new Jeep products and especially 4xe. Changing some of the settings for flat towing is a good idea. I also tow a GC 4xe. I disable the items you mention and also make sure the auto entry exit is turned off so the Jeep doesn’t lower itself when you turn the key off. I also disable auto entry so the Jeep isn’t constantly scanning for a key fob and independently turning the computer on. One last thing; you plug your brake controller into the power point in the dash; however when you turn the Jeep off and close the door that 12v power goes dead. So you actually have no brakes while driving.
@fuelyourwander
@fuelyourwander 3 месяца назад
Good idea on disabling auto entry. I will add that to the checklist. I rewired our 12v power source so it is always on.
@jamesgriffith9059
@jamesgriffith9059 3 месяца назад
I good idea on rewiring the outlet. I just added a 12v plug. Also I looked up the proper “settings” names. I turn off the “Passive Entry”. This stops the computer from waking up when touched. I also turn off the “Auto Entry/Exit Suspension.” If this is left on the Jeep will lower itself to the lowest level after you have set the road height for travel. You also need to start the Jeep daily to make sure it re-levels itself. I just turn it on and run the suspension up one level and back to road height. That seems to reset it.

Thanks... Our toad is a Gladiator and we use the Blue Ox baseplate, towbar and Patriot brake. Couple suggestions... I use locking tow pins as we have lost clevis pins before and it adds security. Also, we use a wide velcro strap to take up the slack in the 7 pin cable and secure it to the tow bar.

Super system and video, unfortunately we need or want to take a car and a 900 pound motorcycle, so this doesn’t work for us, but I see now why so many tow this way. I always wondered if it was possible to make or buy some sort of way to tow normal front wheel drive cars, like make some sort of replacement cv axles that can decouple to allow them to run free.

I have a similar setup and yes it is easy to get everything connected. We have Air Force One braking system which I am very happy with on our 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We addded a stone guard to our Blue OX which protects the front of the Jeep. I trust you check all your lights on the Jeep alng with the wheels rolling. I do have one question, we have noticed that power stering has to be driven a short distance once unhooked, have you experience any similar ocurrances?

Thanks for watching! Ah yes good point about checking the lights. We always do that as part of our final walk around before we get moving. We’ve been looking into the Air Force One braking system so it’s always installed. Good to know you use and like it! No power steering errors but we do get TPMS and suspension errors for the first few miles we drive it after towing.

Do you have a link to your brakes/lights cable that allows for power to the jeep? We have a new tow car and keep draining the battery. Our old tow car had a kill switch which fixed that issue but we were told the newer Honda CRV can’t have that…great videos!
@fuelyourwander
@fuelyourwander 19 дней назад
We use a standard 7 pin trailer connector. One of the pins is a 12V+ terminal from the coach. I installed a wire directly from this 12V connector, through a diode, to the battery to ensure the battery in the toad remains charged whenever the RV is running.

Thanks for the video. You mentioned in the video title that no miles are accrued. That is not the case with our 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The odometer shows 55,000 miles, but 40,000 of those came from being towed behind our motorhome. What Jeep model/year do you have?

@@ckschnabel I stand corrected. Our Jeep is my wife's daily driver and I almost never use it. Neither of us driver much, so the odometer reading of 55,000 miles seemed to track with our 40,000 towing miles leaving about 15,000 miles for personal driving. But after my original post I went back to check maintenance receipts and saw I was incorrect. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!

With your tag steerable axle, your coach is able to make turns at a tight radius. More so than a 40' non-tag coach. When flat towing, is your tow vehicle able to make contact with the RV when making a such a tight radius turn, or does your tow bar setup somehow prevent that? For instance, making a U-turn or turning into that KOA in Milton?
@fuelyourwander
@fuelyourwander 2 месяца назад
I can only speak for our coach/toad setup. There are so many variables in tow bar position/length, coach wheel cut, coach rear overhang, etc. Our tow bar is about 2 inches longer than standard, which gives us a little more room on tight turns. We have also tested it (which I would highly recommend to everyone) in an empty parking lot making full lock 180 degree turns - and there was ample clearance. Excellent question. 😀
@rweissen
@rweissen 2 месяца назад
@@fuelyourwander thank you for the info, good to know your blue ox setup in a full lock turn would not make contact. I have a roadometer nighthawk setup on a 2022 Dream w/tag, hopeful it will not make contact but very cautious until I'm able to fully test it in an open parking lot. That's why I did not attempt to make that turn into the Milton KOA.

I have been towing JGC since 2014. Had a '14, '17, '20 (all Limited) and now also the 4xe Trailhawk. Just curious, I see in the video, you plug your brake unit into the 12V in the IP console. That one is only powered with ignition on. Do you keep the ignition on while towing or did you re-wire the outlet to be hot with ignition off? I always tow with ignition off so not to drain the battery. In the old body style, there was a 12V outlet in the center console that was hot with ignition off. Unfortunately, this was removed in the new body style. Now I run an extension cable from the 12V in the cargo compartment since that one can be set to be either ignition or power off hot. Also, I have noticed that the steering does not turn/track as easily following the coach as it did with the old body style. Especially on loose surfaces, it seems that I'm dragging the tires sideways a bit. Have you noticed this? I'm wondering if this is something specific to my car (maybe alignment) or if it is related to the placement of the tow bar connections much further inward (closer together) than on the previous model or if it's just inherent to the new body style or maybe also the weight of the 4xe at 1200lbs more than the V6 version?
@fuelyourwander
@fuelyourwander 3 месяца назад
I rewired our 12 in the console to always been hot. We also run a 12V power from the RV to the Jeep to ensure the battery stays charged when we tow. It has some form of electric/hydraulic assisted steering, so it does take a little more force for the wheels to turn, but I haven’t seen any scrubbing on the tires or noticed it as a problem.
@ckschnabel
@ckschnabel 3 месяца назад
@@fuelyourwander I don't bother with a 12V charging circuit from the coach. Never drained the battery enough in the last 10 years with the brake system or wireless light bar on the regular Jeeps and now the 4xe will drive electric and charge the 12V off the high voltage battery as long as there is some charge in the HV battery.

having no miles accrued can be a very shady thing when it comes time to sell the vehicle. you may tell the buyer that you towed it behind a motorhome, but that doesnt mean that when your buyer goes to sell it, they will remember to tell their buyer that its been towed with a motorhome, and even though the engine isnt running, youre still putting extra mileage on the wheels, tires, suspension, axles and probably breaks too. the tires and brakes arent a huge deal as those are consumables, but not everyone expects to be replacing suspension components at the mileage that the odometer says. that being said though, there really arent any other better ways to tow a vehicle behind a motorhome, and while i dont plan on buying a motorhome, i do plan on converting a bus and towing my 1984 dodge W100. a 1/2 ton long bed pickup truck with 4 wheel drive. im already intending on doing a lot of work to that truck and i dont plan on getting rid of it any time soon
