All boxers are flat engines, but not all flat engines are of a boxer type. Can you tell the difference or you want to make sure to get it right once for all?

(0:00-0:15) PROLOGUE (917 Engine Display in Porsche Museum / Credits in description) What is the difference between a flat vs. boxer engine? Technically speaking, both are flat but one is a 180° V-engine and the other one is a true boxer. They have their pros and cons, but let's dive into that. (0:15-0:23) INTRO (Intro Music - Smooth by Saib (The Essenchills Volume 2 / In the description) (0:23-1:42) TOPIC Here we have two seemingly, very same engines. They are the same except a single thing which would not be obvious from outside of such an engine and could only be heard soundwise. And one thing is the crankshaft design which differentiates a boxer from a flat engine. If you look closely, you will see that a flat engine has a simpler designed crankshaft with a single crankpin but 2 opposed pistons. This would be the case of most 4, 6, any number cylinder engines, inlines or V(s). Infact, Porsche 917 or Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer used this type in their flat-12 from the 70s. It is often referred to as a 180° V12 as opposite pistons in a V12 normally share their pins. Incase of twin cylinders, they mostly use the boxer type firing order, which, on the other hand, uses split crankpins for each opposed piston, base 180° offset between the pins. It makes the 360° firing of an inline twin, which actually has 0° between the banks as a inline engine and it fires each cylinder every 360°, which means a single pin for both cylinders. You can tell the similiarity hearing the sound of a boxer twin... (1:43-1:45) BOXER TWIN (BMW R 1250 GS HP Sound [Raw Onboard] / Credits in description) (1:47-1:50) 360° STRAIGHT TWIN (Fiat Abarth 595 SS Gr. 5 Hillclimb / Credits in description) (1:51-2:43) CONCLUSION Some of the most known boxers are any Subaru's Engine, Porsche's 4, 6 & 8 cylinders, BMW's twins, or Citroën 2CV. The 180° V-engine is much more rare and is cheaper but it is where its pros end. The boxer has more crank journals to cancel out primary vibrations of the engine. It may make sense in a 12 cylinder engine but not with fewer cylinders. A flat engine generally compared to a straight or a V-engine, has the lowest center of gravity, it is wider though, has two heads, therefore more expensive to produce. One thing to mention, is that the horizontal offset of the cylinders is completely normal and present in any engine with two banks of cylinders. As the connecting rods are besides each other, so is the cylinder moved to a bit to the side. (2:43-3:03) OUTRO (Outro Music - Smooth by Saib) (The Essenchills Volume 2 / In the description) If you're reading this, let Visio know! Thank you for 3 likes. (5-10-2020 / 09:59 PST) 5 likes now. Ha thanks for this one. I'm going to make it my reference video to explain the oddness of the Testarossa engine thanks to the Lego models. There are so many people not understanding the concept of a "180° V engine"... Will even forward it to Ferrari. Even them got it wrong. I mean ... 512BB for Berlinetta *Boxer*. Well done dudes.
@Gois83

On the contrary. Although the 512 is named BB for simplicity, Ferrari has always been very adamant that the engine is a 180º V12 and NOT a boxer engine. VERY!
@manos3790
@manos3790 4 года назад
@@Gois83 I see your point, but Ferrari are going against the law's of physics, as the cylinder bank's aren't at any angle, therefore it's an oppositely opposed or a boxer engine. Also the car in question is the BB12, which if I recall correctly was aka Berlinetta Boxer.
@Gois83

2:18 "a flat engine compared to a V engine has the lowest center of gravity." For the engine block itself, yes, but the heads must be far enough above the road to allow exhaust (or intake) routing. For a flat engine, the ENTIRE engine including the crank must therefore be that high, while for a V-, only the HEADS must be that high. I think you could probably make a 120-degree V engine with a lower center of gravity than a flat engine, because the heads could be the same height but the main part of the block and crankshaft could be a bit lower.
@Kneedragon1962
@Kneedragon1962 4 года назад
There are good reasons to make a twin into a true boxer, including balance and smoothness. Those hold true for 4 cylinders and mostly for 6, but once you go beyond 6, it makes more sense to go with the shared crank pin design, because it makes for a simpler cheaper lighter crank that's easier to manufacture. By the time you get to 6 pairs of cylinders, a true boxer crank is heavier and less strong, and much harder to make, and the balance issues sort themselves out anyway, so there's no real advantage to it. A true boxer 12 is going to have awful issue with twist due to torque, and torsional vibration. You'd need to take the drive from the centre of the crank, which can be done but that's one additional expense and complexity... True boxer engines are the BMW motorcycle engines and the VW Beetle. Ferrari for one, made a lot of engines they called 'Boxers' which weren't...

Nice ! just a quick correction at the end : the horizontal offset is not present on every engine with two banks of cylinders : Harley davidson uses a weird type of conrod where one "forks" over the other one so they can be concentric and aligned. Not sure if every HD engine uses it though, i'm not a HD expert. It doesn't seem to serve any purpose other than it allows the cylinders to be perfectly in line, which is a disadvantage with air cooling. So it's just to look pretty i guess

Opposed in the aviation world simply means cylinders 180° apart. Also with the exception of opposed engines such as the air cooled Lycomings liquid cooled multi bank* aero engines almost always featured cylinders who's centerlines were in the same plane *V-8s, V-12s, O-12s, H-24s plus the inline radials such as the Jumo 222, Wright Tornado and others. @@upsidedowndog1256 because of the 90° angle those V6's are odd firing with alternating 90°-150° firing intervals. However you can split the crankpins to even out the firing intervals to 120° as it should be. The natural V-angle for a V6 is 120° though, so 60° V6's also have split crabkpins or they would aswel be odd firing, unless they fire all cylinders on one bank and the the other bank, which wouldn't good for vibrations.

@@mr.petrolhead5432 I rebuilt a 4.3 GM years ago. It had split crankshaft journals. It looked like a disaster trying to happen. It worked out great, though. Ran like a champ until the computer and the wiring went to shit. A mechanic bought it. I have no doubts it is still out there running in something.

@@upsidedowndog1256 might look sketchy at first, but without them the engine would be running much rougher, especially when idleing and at low rpm. Cranks with split crankpins are usually forged steel, so they are pretty strong.
