05/07 -- My friend Bryant R. and I went to the non-tidal Schuylkill River at Kelly Drive for some Flathead Catfish. I ended up landing my first Flathead Catfish of the year, and Bryant landed his first Flathead ever! As a bonus, the video has some extra content of my other friend -- Ronald J. -- landing a Flathead as well. My personal best for that stretch of the River was 23lbs; however, as mentioned in the video, the largest documented fish from there was a whopping 38lber.
So, if you haven't tried yet, go do some Flathead fishing! Heh. PLEASE -- just make sure to release the trophy fish for better future generations of fish; don't leave trash behind on the spot; etc.
The full report for this video is below:

Extreme Philly Fishing I think he means the tail of the bluegill you used early on in the video you didn't take the scales off the hook. That's about the only thing I can think of. You did fine obviously so his opinion is irrelevant.

+Angela Silcox It's not about _"what is the best bait."_ For me, it is about *what is abundant.* As you know, I follow the ideology of *selective harvest.* In other words, I only take what is common and in-between. I release smaller fishes, trophy fishes, and rare Species in a certain body of water. It just so happens that in the Schuylkill River, the Pumpkinseed (_Lepomis gibbosus_) is a rare Species of fish in comparison to Bluegill (_Lepomis macrochirus_). Therefore, I release all of them there. I have no doubt that they are good bait, though! If they were abundant here, I would use them too. Tight lines and fish on, Angela!

If you want to keep your live bait alive longer, get the kind of minnow bucket that you can put in the water. It has holes in it that will allow the water to flow in and out and keep your baitfish well oxygenated.
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 лет назад
+Thomas Unknown I would love to have one of those and many of my friends use it; however, I need a small bucket because I go everywhere nowadays by public transportation. Thus, I need to carry my bait from location to location in a small bucket with water in it. I appreciate the suggestion, though. Tight lines, Thomas!

great videos, keep fishing. i would try a slip rig, whole gill, with a balloon floating around in front of the rocky shallows, just where it drops off. fish at night and put glow tabs in white balloons. massive cats, skipjack herring might work, buckets of old cheese placed at fishing spots draw cats especially blues. love my catfishing. peace out great fish

Extreme Philly Fishing yeah MS has a lot of good quality panfishing sadly the commercial fishermen here and handfishermen are taking all the big blues and flatheads from our waters,I've been traveling to Alabama they outlawed all netting there but as far as small mouth,large mouth,stripe bass,and crappie pretty much any panfish even nice bowfin sometimes here in Mississippi.

What kind of rig do you use for cat fishing? I usually use a top&bottom but what do you feel works best for larger sized catfish?
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 9 лет назад
Billy Ray My favorite type of rig for Catfishing is a slip-sinker setup. In other words, an egg sinker, then a snap swivel, snelled hook with a leader. For the snelled hook, I like to use nylawire as a leader and a size 7/0 Gamakatsu Octopus hook.

I used to live in New Jersey, near Philadelphia, but I never fished the Schuykill River for catfish. I live in Georgia now, just a few miles from Lake Russell and Clarks Hill Reservoir, where the lake record Flathead and the lake record Blue catfish are both over 80 pounds. I want to give some constructive criticism. Around the 11:15 mark on your video you are showing the hook and sinker rig you use for catching catfish. I would like to suggest that you start using "no roll" sinkers. They are like the egg sinkers that you use now, but they are flat instead of round. Google them. They stay put better on the bottom of rivers if you have current. Also, I use a barrel sinker (size 1/0) instead of a snap swivel. Sometimes the snap swivel can break at the snap. You have to tie your leader on to the barrel swivel, but it is much stronger. I also use circle hooks for catfish. I prefer the size 7/0 and I prefer "offset) circle hooks. The only thing with a circle hook is that you have to use a snell knot to attach the circle hook to the leader line. The nice thing is that the circle hook sets itself. Also, when you hook your cut bait on to your hook, make sure that you check the hook point to make sure that you don't have any of your baitfish's scales on the point of the hook. That can lower the chances of hooking the fish. I enjoyed your video and if you ever want to talk catfishing you can email me at theelbertonian@gmail.com Thomas
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 лет назад
+Thomas Unknown Sounds like an awesome place to live at, Thomas! As for the constructive criticism, I do admit that I don't have gear specifically for heavy-weight Catfish. Being a Multi-Species angler, most of my gear is "general." In other words, stuff that I would use not for a single Species, but for multiple ones. I do appreciate all the suggestions that you have given me. Thank you very much! Tight lines and FISH ON!
@devilkicln
@devilkicln 9 лет назад
Man, that's a lot of night crawler you're using for bluegills.. All u need is a tiny piece or even better just use waxworm. Best bait for bluegills. Also, try chicken liver next time for the catfish. Guarantee better, faster and even bigger cats! Tight lines man, keep up the good catch!
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 9 лет назад
devilkicln I appreciate the suggestion, Devilklcln! I usually put a bit extra nightcrawler on my hooks because I don't specifically target one type of fish. Thus, I am always in hopes of landing something else. Hehe. And yes -- chicken liver is a "to go" bait for the Channel Catfish; however, I prefer to avoid them because it's truly disgusting. Hah. Tight lines, man!
@kurtschilling3965
@kurtschilling3965 8 лет назад
watch out for the scales on the point of the hook when you put on the cut bait. i saw on the first one you casted out, you had a scale on the point. might cause you to not get a good hook set.

@extremephillyfishing

Hey if u buy some fishing bells it will be easier to u to see and hear bite, then watching rods all the time :D nice fishing
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 9 лет назад
Allen Johnson Funny that you mention the bells! Since I was 8, my father was very against us using bells for fishing (back in Brazil). He used to say that using the bell or other bite indicators would take your "sharpness" away. Thus, I was trained to never use auxiliary equipment to detect fish bites. However, I am definitely not against those who use bells! As a matter of fact, I still find the "bobber on the line" a very charming thing. Heh.
@allenjohnson9554
@allenjohnson9554 9 лет назад
Extreme Philly Fishing I love using bobber on still water and then he is my indicator. But when i fish on big river on bottom rig and if there are snags u can wait for several days for that big fish to take bait and if he take's it and i dont hear bite its gone, especialy at night. Best of luck :D

Dang man don't you get that feeling that your rod in the middle bends a little too much lol
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 лет назад
+Dominic Duran I love when that happens, Dominic! As a matter of fact, I go light on my catches and I have never broken a rod during a fight (not yet). My biggest "fight" recently was pulling in a 40lbs Cownose Skate from the surf in Ocean City using a Medium-heavy action rod. The rod bent crazily and I seriously couldn't pump well without breaking it! So, I had to rely on the line and reel. Instead of depending on the drag system of the reel, I had to use a "hand drag." In other words, I had to stop the line with my hands and let it go when the fish ran. Pretty wild, since you risk burning your hands when you do that. Hah. In the end, I was able to land the beast. Haha. Tight lines!

For example -- if you are into Largemouth Bass, Meadow Lake and the Manayunk Canal are good places to hit. If you are more into Catfish, then the Delaware and the Schuylkill Rivers are the place to go to. Etc.

Extreme Philly Fishing thanks alot is there a specific power bait for cat fish
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 9 лет назад
Radames Padilla I've seen different "dough products" for Channel Catfish before; however, I would recommend either live bait or cut bait for most Catfish Species. Some cut American Eel (Anguilla rostrata), Bunker (Brevoortia tyrannus), or Bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) do wonders for them.

I've alway's known flatheads to be more predatory. I've always had better luck on live bait. Of course a catfish will eat anything but the best bait I've found so far was live bullheads. I've caught many 25-35 pounders on 6 inch bullheads.
@linhngo7859
@linhngo7859 7 лет назад
Flatheads usually don't prey on bullheads, they just want to get rid of pesky small catfish from their spawning areas.

+Linh Ngo well most of the time they already have them deep in their stomach but either way, it works.

+Fan Ran Oh yeah. I have seen and heard many things about the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, PA. One time, I was fishing around the Walnut street bridge and cops started showing up in groups!!! A diving crew came and they pulled a body like 50 feet from where I was fishing. Scary stuff, man, Fan Ran. LOL. Tight lines!

+Extreme Philly Fishing I also think I remember that there was a chopped body found on that river from a gang related incident. Hope there's no drowning people that could drag your line and you mistake it for a gigantic flathead tho.

Your bait bucket.....since you make comment about bait not living long, tie a rope to the handle of your bucket and put it in the river so your bait has fresh water all the time. Great vids I'm a crappie fisherman any time your around mid-missouri we need to go fishing.

That's super dumb too use 12lbs test and light action rods, You're gonna hook up too a good one and hes gonna either snap that rod or line when they run you into a snap or even just the fight alone lmao.
@extremephillyfishing
@extremephillyfishing 8 лет назад
Party OMO I don't think that is dumb at all! I think that fishing comes with different fishing styles and all styles should be respected. Since you are making fun of light tackle, I am assuming that you are a "power fisherman." If so, I totally respect that. I have seen folks using heavy equipment for Flatheads and they catch them! Myself, I am a Multi-Species angler and a lover for light tackle. You cited the challenge of the fish snapping the line or running into a snag, which for a light tackle angler is just part of the challenge of landing the fish. Nothing too extraordinaire. Up to date, I have landed 30lbs+ Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Flathead Catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) on 12lbs test line, and I must say: the fight was AMAZING. The gratification level was even higher! Did I lose lots of fish using light tackle? Absolutely! But for me, playing the fish with lighter tackle is way worthier than pulling it through heavy tackle. Of course this is just my style and my personal opinion on the matter. Summarizing...I don't think that my style is dumb. It may be different and it may offer more challenges; however, it should be respected. If I respect your style of fishing, I believe that you should respect mine. Tight lines!
