Flaw I found Testing Signal Blocker for Key Fobs / Protect a car from THEFT: Cars with KEYLESS Entry

Here's a flaw I found testing a signal blocker for key fobs. Protect a car from theft, especially cars with keyless entry, using signal blockers for key fobs or Faraday pouches. This flaw rendered the Faraday box I got useless. To prevent/protect car from theft i.e., keyless entry theft, a signal blocker for smart key fobs should be used ideally, as part of theft mitigation. Smart keys or cars with smart entry, while boosting convenience, have the risk of being exploited via signal boosting and relay attacks. Consider investing in a signal blocker or Faraday bag if you don't have one. They are dirt cheap!

After some more testing, it turns out what caused the Faraday bag not to work with the sleeve was that the thickness of the sleeved key prevented the perfect seal that kept the signal contained in the Faraday case! Silicone as is, had no direct interference that made the case stop working.

I think that silicone sleeve ads some thickness to the key which I causing the pouch not to seal completely. Even though the zip is closed. I can see lip that seals the key in the Faraday cage in the pouch. Having that silicone sleeve compromises the seal. Other pouch have different design and it just wraps everything in.

You are 100% correct. I later discovered this after the video and left it as a pinned comment.

For my Canadian Hyundai Sonata PHEV 2016, if you want to disable the Car Key Fob, Hold the Key Fob Lock Button 4 seconds. After the 4 seconds, Keep Holding the Car Key Fob Lock but also press the Car Key Fob Unlock Button for 2 seconds. This will stop the continuous RFID signal from Key Fob. If you try to open the car door by pressing the button on the car handle, it will not open (unless you have another set of the Car Key Fob still emitting with you). Another benefit to disable the Car Key FOB, the battery last longer. If you want back the continuous RFID signal, just press the Key Fob Unlock Button. This will keep your car to be stolen by thieves with relay attack where ever you are. Make sure to do this for all the other Car Key Fob of the same car (especially when you are at home) unless it will allow thieves to relay attack because they will catch the rfid signal of the others Car Key Fob.

This is what all car manufacturers should be doing! Toyota has a similar protocol for disabling fobs. Thanks for commenting!

If your key fob has a battery saving mode, this will essentially shut off the smart key and make it stop emitting signals. With my 2023 Tacoma fob, hold down the lock button, then press the unlock button twice. This renders the fob useless unless you press a button to reactivate it. When traveling I keep my fob on neck chain, disable my fob after exiting the vehicle, and no need to worry about relay attacks or gimmicky faraday bags.

You would think other manufacturers would jump on Toyota's ingenuity with this shut off function, but no! Really good one by Toyota and they rolled it out way back. I tested it on a 2010 Lexus IS250.

Speaking on similar topic, ALL smart key fobs should have the ability to push a button so they stop transmitting 24/7. This would help not only for security but to increase battery life...

wow. do all fobs have battery saving modes? interesting!

That's all well and good for the Tacoma, but not everyone has a Tacoma. Do ALL keyless-entry key fobs work the same way?

Most modern keyless vehicles, go to your key fob and press and hold the lock and unlock buttons at the same time for 3 seconds what this does makes your vehicle not being keyless anymore you will now need the key fob to unlock your vehicles doors.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG 4 месяца назад
Not sure how wide that is. Surely not Honda. Kudos to Toyota & Lexus for implementing it. Do you know other manufacturers that have?

@DIYAutoworksNG others have posted that Toyota, GM key fobs can do this, you can disabled them making you need to use the key fob to open your vehicle doors I guess the only way to find if it works is to give it a try.

I doubt the silicone pouch had any effect. I think it's simply that the particular Faraday case is not reliable (works sometimes, fails sometimes). I think it was just a coincidence that it failed while the silicone pouch was in.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG 2 года назад
Fair point. I don't see any logical explanation to the silicone failure. I'll do more testing and revert back.

Please sir if I may ask what's the frequency of this key for your Honda accord? 315 or 433 mhz.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG 2 года назад
Generally, the US & Japan use the 315Mhz frequency while Europe uses 433Mhz for key fobs. I have the US Accord.

@@DIYAutoworksNG I understand that sir and also have an idea. But you can check even though yours is US built it's 433mhz.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG 2 года назад
You are correct! Just checked the literature and did find that it's 433mhz despite being US built. Perhaps due to overcrowding on 315mhz. I see Europe is opening up the 833mhz frequency too. Thanks for sharing.

In a nutshell, keyless fobs are making us lazier and making thieves more successful.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG 2 года назад
Yep. But some car makers are ahead of the curve even with keyless entry systems e.g. Toyota/Lexus smart fobs can be turned off at will, and woken up only when you press a button.
@icie4u
@icie4u 5 месяцев назад
Key fobs were initially a security measure to help unlock car doors quickly and sound the car alarm with the panic button on a fob in case of dangerous situations when every second counts! What would probably work better is to have close range coils and car start with automatic locking mechanism after exiting the cars. Just leave the frequency in a fob for a panic button feature which only operates the horn and lights on the car but does not start the vehicle or unlock then doors. Close range coil sensitive systems that don’t require a fob battery just a working car battery.

The pouches are functioning properly; it's the silicone sleeve. The title is misleading.
@DIYAutoworksNG
@DIYAutoworksNG 11 месяцев назад
See the pinned comment. I later found it was the sleeve making the made the case not to seal properly. That said, I know many people use such smart keys with sleeves, and it's imperative to be sure that your Faraday pouch still works well if you do use a sleeve.
