Thanks bro your video truly helped me make my first custom guitar. It turned out perfectly following your instruction. I now have two more in front of me now and look forward to many more. Thank you very much my friend. I really wish I could send a picture.
I spray my guitar bodies with an Iwata Medea siphon feed and a .05 needle using Createx paint. This is after I've used Solarez grain filler. After grain filling, sanding, and painting I use Solarez clear high gloss top coat. The thing about Solarez top coat is you brush it on with a foam brush and let it level for about an hour. Notice I said level, because it won't dry. To dry it, you take it out into direct sunlight for 3 minutes. It's completely dry and ready final buffing and polishing, then for the electronic to be installed. Guitar looks like its been dipped in glass.
I came across this video as I have been researching crackle finishes for a guitar project I’m doing. I can only hope mine turns out half as good as yours! It looks amazing. The green under the black crackle is a great look. Really great!
That turned out amazing! I've finished some swirled objects with clear coat too. What I do is use regular clear coat during the leveling stages (costs 5 euros a can, 4,50 dollars). Once it's almost level I shoot two coats of 2k. You've got to be a little bit careful not to burn through the finish and it costs a bit more time. But it's a lot cheaper and just as durable.
Fantastic tutorial! Looks mint! I have just done my first custom splatter job on a jackson Kelly that needed some love, got a few runs in the clearcoat! but overall happy with how it turned out
STUNNING job, and you let folks know they too can do this. I would be pleased with that on my axe.( I play like crap, so looking good helps!) Two comments. I personally like the variation between large and small cracks. Keeps a great crackle from looking mundane. Also is more realistic (look at real, aged crackle on an antique). Second, you can level your gloss coat more quickly AND safely if you back your sandpaper with something stiff. Using your fingers allows the paper to sand down into the cracks and low spots somewhat, causing you to have to sand you high spots even more. Take it from someone who has done high-end finishing on cars. Doesn't need to be a solid board. A layer or two of rag stretched on a small piece of wood, or use a dense piece of foam for curves. Light pressure! Nice work!
Yeah I could have definitely used a stiffer yet flexible backer, and I'm well aware that it's possible to create ruts when using your fingers, but I like to do it that way. I feel the surface better and have been doing it long enough to avoid ruts. Thank you for the kind words, advice, and for watching!
I've used the spray max 2K a few times. It works damn well and the cans have a good fan pattern. I use a drill and some foam pads to buff mine. Looks awesome
that tip is for an overlapping pattern, to avoid that turn it 45 degrees and the pattern will be more uniform, or use a different tip obviously, usually small things can't afford a large 6" so a different tip is best.. for me anyway
$3000 paint on a $45 guitar that's awesome and hilarious! Great videos man you got home spraying down to a science specially living in Florida that's crazy! Great job!
Most crackle paint jobs are finished with self leveling resin. The process is longer but doesn't require further treatment. I.E. no sanding, buffing, and so on. Holes will need to be re-drilled, but you can take advantage of any stripped holes being repaired.
Ooooooooooowwwww! I need to try this one way or the other. Great you don't have a painting factory the size of a football field but you're stuck in a home as well haha. Gives me hope :D
Try using simtec clear polyester it lays on thick and will easily cover over the crackle with 2 or 3 coats. Also it sands and buffs out really nice plus it's 90% the hardness of glass. Get a cheap hvlp gun from tcp global make sure the tip is 2.0 or higher since this is a high solid...but the down side is you have 25 mins max or it will harden in the gun...just spray it up to 25 mins...clean your gun with acetone...then mix up another round by then your fist few coats will be nice a tacky then and hit it again...it may seem like a lot but the results come out so nice after wet sanding and buffing. I want to try that crackle over a silver crylon base, crackle and then candy over it ...maybe with a blue candy house of kolor or burple👍🎸
Thank you for the tutorial. I have a craft project with crackle that I want to put a high gloss finish on and have been worried about the best way to do it. Guess I'd better purchase a respirator.
Very cool. Do you ever get little bubbles to form under the clear with only giving it a flash time of a minute for the solvent to escape? I have to wait like five minutes between coats.
Wow ! That came out amazing, Nice job dude ! I think Ill try this eith my next project guitar. Thank you. I might actually try to leave the entire body rough like the pickgaurd you made. I think it would be cool for the entire guitar to feel lile reptile skin. But thank you for the idea and tutorial. Stay safe down there brother. ✌ ✝ 🎸
How soon after the crackle coat application did you apply the 2k clear? And have you experimented with a 2k clearcoat between the base color coat and the crackle? Some brands say it helps bring bigger cracks...about to take the plunge on 2 guotar refinishes buy want to get it right!
i need montana black crackle to actually “crackle” over a clear finish, has anyone done experiments? also does anyone know whether nitrocellulose plays well with the montana crackle?
Hey mate,, what type of krylon aerosol did you use for the green? I'm eager to take your advice on this instead of using the reccomended Montana Gold,, great videos mate,, thanks in advance!
Got it…. Working on a blue and white guitar… time consuming… used 2 cans of Montana CLEARCOAT… sounds like 2k would have been better. Also working on a new glow in the dark guitar.
great video, till ya started polishing lol Holy moly dude. WAY too much polish You need to wet the pad, then use a few dots, and go at high speed. this was like yogurt hahha
