I live in centennial park it is the weirdest place now you have all forms of believers now living in what is essentially a large compound it is a really nice and peaceful place to live. I lived in the FLDS during Rulon times and left the church at 16.

How much of Centennial Park still practices polygamy?
@DanBatemanBlack
@DanBatemanBlack 20 дней назад
@@China-Clay not sure of the actual numbers. The problem is you have different degrees of affiliation now, They still allow members who don't "believe" like they do or practice specifically to what Joseph smith taught, To come to church but they're seemingly different subgroups now you have your hardcore believers some just barely hanging on and actually a few atheists just like me.

@@China-Clay My favorite book The speed of trust by Stephen M.R. Covey says it best. Even people that you admire that you trust and have been there your whole life some of the information that they tell you is wrong, But because of that trust we go our lives believing falsehoods. The Internet is a powerful tool in combating this.

If you sponsor/bring a freshly escaped polygamist for your cruise, like you mentioned, I hope you can also sponsor a mental health counselor to come aboard as well. If they haven't been out long, the new lifestyle and the things the may see on the boat may be shocking to them. People in bikinis and people drinking alcohol, and overall decadance on the ship may leave them feeling shocked and conflicted. I'm sure they'll be happy and amazed and excited, but maybe also guilty and shame at the same time. If you're gonna sponsor an ex-polygamist, i hope you'll also bring a counselor to support them as well.

Thank you Sam for talking about growing up in constant FEAR that comes from going to "church" every week. I was raised Pentecostal, and grew up in constant fear of demons, the end of times, going to hell, and evil satanic things being all around me. I was told in explicit detail what hell would be like, from a very young age. Growing up in constant fear of eternal torture is not a good way to grow up. Thank you for discussing this!

Some mainstream Christian traditions call their buildings a "meetinghouse" because they want to emphasize that the "church" is the people not the building. Buildings are considered more functional than particularly sacred. They're trying to distinguish themselves from other traditions that consider the physical church buildings to be specially consecrated holy places.

Mainstream Christian here. I would say we talk about our old selves dying (a spiritual death) when we become believers, accepting Christ as our Savior, and a physical death at the end of life.

Re: meeting house. The small town I grew up on Long Island New York had a street called Meetinghouse lane that went from the earliest settlement (1640’s) to the main part of the current town. I always assumed that the church of the original settlement was on that street.

Sam and Melissa on the uncle, an acting thing. I remember my mom telling me that back. In the days when polygamy went into hiding, they would call the women. Ants and the man uncles, so the kids would not tell on who their father or mother was. (When they went in public] by accident

I was raised in a very strict church that did a lot of fear mongering - pounding on the Bible and yelling through a microphone. I spent most of my life not knowing the love of God, but only the fear of His wrath. It messed with me psychologically then and still does. The places that were labeled as dangerous ranged from person to person, but could range from movie theatres, casinos, and anywhere with dancing or alcohol. It's still hard to not have those thoughts creep in when I am exposed to those things (which I do not believe are inherently evil).

Interesting. I remember watching this documentary series years ago when it aired. I thought it was neat that the women were the ones who seemed to be initiating the marriages, because that was unusual. Thanks for putting in the history of when this group split off and who the families were, I didn't know that aspect of it. I was curious to know Sam's perspective because they're so geographically close to the FLDS. Also, I'm glad you explained a bit more about giving talks. This really isn't a thing in liturgical Christianity. I've heard Mormons and ex-Mormons talk about it, but wasn't really sure what it was. I think it's really normal to have fear or other feelings come up when you've been through something like that.

Guys, Alyssa Grenfell has a video about rules on a mission. It's like an hour-long video. She has a book; you should read it and review it. I'm eventually going to read it. My friend's dad was our Bishop in the Institute. I still call him Bishop. He gave me the best calling, the program maker. But I could never get a hold of the chorister. I didn't know what the hymns were, so I just picked a few. I call women in leadership positions, Ms. (their first name) out of respect. They call it a bulletin, right? My grandma had a Catholic funeral. I was Lutheran for 2 years.

The Uncle thing is interesting to me. I grew up evangelical christian and went to a methodist summer camp as a teen and we called all of the camp counselors Aunt and Uncle as a term of respect (and the college aged 'post-high' campers were Cousin). It's interesting to me that that relational term is one that seems to go between various groups.
@melz6625
@melz6625 20 дней назад
Lol that sounds so funny to me. The whole respect thing is easier in German. Here we still have informal vs. formal address: Duzen vs Siezen. You would use formal with all strangers older than you, people of authority and elders. In general anyone older you are not on first name basis. Also in professional settings. And then there is informal address with peers, friends and family. It’s the same as in French between tutoyer and vouvoyer.

@@pamelavargas6811 Honestly, I think it was a my camp specific thing, tbh. It a UM camp in PA and the specific camp week I went to had been around for like 50 or 60 some odd years when I started going to it, and our camp dean (leader of the week) had been there every year because his parents were the ones that started it, so we got a lot of old hold-over traditions that the other weeks even at the same site didn't have.

Sam, I wonder if the fear you felt watching them call on people to speak might be partly social anxiety? I am LDS and have been in meetings a couple of times where they have called on people in the congregation to speak, without notice. That gives me a lot if anxiety to think that I might be called on to speak, without any warning. It is hard enough to get up in front of everyone when you have time to prepare what you are going to say. But I am just thinking about it from my experience. I can also see that you would feel fear if it reminded you of fear inducing sermons. Thank you for your videos! I love to see your perspectives. And I appreciate the respect you give to people who are in the FLDS and LDS groups. You both are wonderful and so kind to everyone.

The Catholic Church changed the color the priest wears for a funeral Mass (church service) in the 70's. It had been always black but now the priestly vestments can be white, purple, or black. Where I go to church in Maryland they usually wear white. But the rest of the congregation is usually in black and dressed formally, like business formal.

I’m interested in learning about different religions. I believe in the Father, Son and Holy Ghost but maybe in a different way than other people. But I feel that God is a loving spirit and I don’t think he would hate anyone, especially because they were different. ❤🙏🏼

I've watched some of your videos and you guys seem to be totally polarized on the idea polygamy because of the church grew up in and the environment, when in reality your experiences have very little to do with the polygamy, it's more to do with the church and in essence what you have done is thrown the baby out with the bath water. Polygamy is not the problem here it's the interpretation and the application of it in some instances, there are many women thriving in Modern day polygamous families would never dream of monogamy as the preferable option many of these women are not doing it for any reason connected to religion, they're doing it for practical reasons including the emotional love and support of the co wives and so there are many reasons why polygamy can be very beneficial to all involved the only thing that matters is the application and the pure intentions of all concerned. Polygamy is simply a relationship structure like any other monogamy has many of the same problems but none of the Solutions polygamy can offer.
