Blame greed, and the fact that vets, insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry collude to charge owners on the basis of "risk", rather than the actual cost of treatment, in terms of skill and medication. Actuaries use vets statistics to decide how often a pet might be expected to need a certain intervention on average, add a profit for the insurance company to the vets costs, and profits, and a sum for inflation, and set a monthly rate for pet insurance. Then there are extras, as pets age, or prove to be more expensive than average etc. Pharma look at the statistics, and calculate their drug charges likewise, even though drugs may be cheap to manufacture. If not insured, or uninsurable, ask your vet to consider a reduction in charge to a reasonable level for their services, or find a vet that is more flexible. Most vet meds are repurposed human drugs, often not specifically licensed for pets, and may be available over the pharmacy or supermarket counter for a much lower cost.

Thank you Dr. Jones. I am elderly and on a fixed income. It is ridiculous how much vets are asking. Recently, a vet asked $85 for a 5 minute exam. My dog is a rescue. Should something happen to her, God forbid, I will not rescue another animal due to cost. You are an angel for what you do.❤❤❤❤❤❤😊

I’ve been using diatomaceous earth for years! It’s great in chicken coops and the yard. Great dewormer as well! I’ve worked in the vet field for years. And it was always mind boggling how the Dr’s would push the chemicals. Then claim they are about holistic’s. I would on a down low recommend this. ESP for clients not being able to afford the expensive stuff. I mean cmon we are supposed to be helping pets, not pushing big pharma agenda profits. Same with over vaccinations. I’ve since left that field for many many reasons.

Thank you for your transparency!! I’m in NYC and I know the flea tick season is upon us with it getting warmer now. Couldn’t believe my recently adopted puppy who already tested negative for heartworm needed an appointment just to get some heartgard through Chewy prescription!! Found out the tablet given by the rescue caused seizures and eventually killed a friend’s dog, so I was hoping for some heartgard but looks like that’s not possible nowadays without having to pay for a vet visit. And couldn’t agree more about the poisons!! Revolution burned a hole into my then kitten’s back of her neck as a preventative when I tried telling them she has hot spots and they happen when she’s anxious- and she was misdiagnosed too! All to push an expensive corn and soy filled “hypoallergenic” cat food she wouldn’t touch. Unreal how this industry will tug on people’s emotions so they can’t think straight or look for other options. Gonna be using food grade DE on my soon to be 7 month old puppy this week!

So true, our vet always push for vaccines. Once, I got fed up and told her: I don't really mind if the cat die, its just an animal, I had many cats back in my hometown, no one vaxx their animals there, and they live longer than here, so I won't vaxx him, she said I can get sick too, I said: I don't work through fear, its not me. I don't care either, see i am almost 59, I lives with ch kesn, ducks, dogs, cats, goose, pigeons, etc, my whole life, without you and your chemicals there, you won't convince me at this stage I my life, I have life too long to swallow your narrative.

@@theresa94010 I’m also in CA with similar experiences. One of my cats is a bit overweight and they wanted me to buy Science Diet’s food. I said I’d rather try to get him to be more active by playing with him more and cut down on the kibble (which is Orijen, no grains or filler).

The fab thing about diatomaceous earth is that parasites (fleas/ticks) can never evolve to evade it as it's not a chemical action, but rather a mechanical action. It's fab. I've used it for years, it 100% works, and my cats never have ticks or fleas and they're both outside cats in Nova Scotia (tick central.) I use a toothbrush and I apply it, keeping the bristles very close to the skin. I brush it in from the base of the tail to the nape of the neck (dragging the brush backward through the fur.) Then I make a ring around the neck, and then from chin tip down to breast. I've seen many videos doing the whole body dusting thing. There's no need. You don't need that much dust flying around -- just tail to nape, around the neck and under the chin.
@Jayling
@Jayling Год назад
Thank you! The toothbrush trick going from tail to neck did work so much more nicely with less dust, and the cats seemed to enjoy the brushing along the way. Again, thank you, I've had a mess of dust over here by the sprinkling method. :)

When you get a flea infestation do you apply the product to your cats daily? If so, for how many days? Do you bathe them at some point? Fleas are bad down here in Dallas during the summer! Thank you for your tips!
@threeharesmedia8958
@threeharesmedia8958 Год назад
@@loribach534 I'm a diatom user and I've just adopted the toothbrush method mentioned above. I also had a near infestation. I never bathe the cats ... just a full body brushing of diatoms. no need to reapply as long as the diatoms don't get wet. If they get wet, then, yes, reapply. Takes a few days for fleas to 'dessicate/dehydrate' but most of them just hop off because they don't want to walk through the D Earth on the cats skin. If you're finding fleas in the house -- just do a super thorough vaccuum of every nook and cranny, and then use one of those duster thingys for diatoms (about $20 on Amazon) and 'pump' the earth around floor edges/skirting boards and just leave the diatoms there. It won't just get rid of fleas, but every other critter with an exo-skeleton. MUST be food grade diatoms. I also use a fine mist of a rosemary/cedar essential oil solution (Both rosemary and cedar are NOT harmful to cats at low doses) and fleas/ticks/wasps/bees all HATE Cedar. Ticks and fleas hate Rosemary. Fab if you can get Rosemary or Cedar in your. garden -- keeps the population down! If I ever run out of diatoms I use the Rosemary and Cedar spray exclusively -- and it DEF keeps fleas/ticks away from my cat. The only place that they get ticks is around the short fur on their faces. I can see these clearly and pick them off daily (you don't want rosemary/cedar essential oil, or even diatoms close to the eyes/mouth.) But there are NO ticks or fleas hiding in the deeper fur. I brush them each once daily just to remove the very occasional 'wanderer' in the deeper fur. For the Rosemary/Cedar spray -- use organic essential oils. Add a little natural soap (like Catillle) to a an 8 oz amber or cobalt glass pray bottle (found on Amazon). Add 10 drops Rosemary and 15 drops cedar to the table spoon or so of soap and fill the rest with water. Shake like crazy to dissipate the oils well. Spray onto your palms and then rub into cats fur from tail to head (and especially the ears), under the chin, and in the fluffy cheek area (but not around eyes or nose or too close to the mouth.) 100% works! I'm not lying. Even without the diatoms. It doesn't need to smell 'strong' to the human nose -- and the cat doesn't need to be licking tons of essential oils, but it's strong enough to keep the fleas/ticks away. Diatoms and Rosemary/Cedar oil -- it's all you need! Just do patch tests to make sure kitties are okay with it -- but I've researched, and cats tolerate cedar and rosemary well. Try not to make too much direct contact with skin if using Rosemary/Cedar -- jut make the fur smell! :) Test and trial -- you'll find the right solution.

Diatomaceous earth is great as a wound covering powder for pets who can't easily wear band-aids. It rapidly desiccates the wound, forms a solid crust, incorporating the powder with the fibrin formed as the wound scabs and may prevent bacterial contamination, and infection. Chemically, it is finely divided microporous silica, so potentially may cause silicosis if breathed into the lungs, but practically, the amount of exposure is very small. Interesting fact 1: it is mined from ancient lake bed deposits where the bodies of microscopic green aquatic algae called diatoms, which form an internal silica shell of 2 halves called frustules, perorated with holes for gas and nutrient exchange, formed a sediment over geological time and turned to a fossil containing rock, sometimes called Kieselguhr. There may be millions of diatom species in marine, fresh water and damp locations globally. Interesting fact 2: it has an amazingly large surface area due to the micropores. Alfred Nobel mixed this substance with nitro-glycerine to form the high explosive known as dynamite, making it safe to transport and handle. It may also be used in toothpastes and metal polishes as a fine abrasive.
@MaryAnnNytowl
@MaryAnnNytowl 9 месяцев назад
And the famous White Cliffs of Dover are made from fossilized diatoms, too!
@tikaanipippin
@tikaanipippin 9 месяцев назад
@@MaryAnnNytowl not exactly... The Chalk Cretaceous cliffs in Kent and Sussex are formed from the calcareous (calcium carbonate, chalk) fossil shells of Foraminifera - marine amoebic protozoa - animals, which feed on bacteria and detritus in the plankton populations of shallow seas, whereas diatomacious earth is comprised of the fossil siliceous (silicon dioxide, silica) frustules (half-shells) of lacrustine (from freshwater lakes) green algae - plants called diatoms which photosynthesize their carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water in sunlight. There are also marine diatomaceous earth deposits too.

Thanks for your channel. The last decade or so vets have become so expensive some pet owners just can't afford to get basic vet care for their pets. Last time I asked mine what effective flea treatment they had that would work, I was recommended the latest one which was about £70/80! So nearly a hundred pounds for something that is supposed to be a regular expense. How they expect anyone to be able to afford it it mind boggling. So the effect of their stance is that less pets can access care, which is anthema to the point of their profession. I only use mine for acute injuries at this stage, which they are great for. And tbh, my pets are healthier for it. The last cats I've had, sans vaccinations and on raw food, are the healthiest cats I've ever had, and I've had several in my lifetime.

I just recently found your channel; I love it!! As a long time pet groomer/parent, I've seen first paw what vets are charging for basic services; especially these days 🙄. Pet owners can be very gullible and desperate when the doctor tells them there is only one option and this is it. Can't afford it? Don't worry, we offer credit at a million % interest. 😆😮‍💨 I'm very cautious about health advice for clients pets, due to my lack of medical training; however I always try to come up with alternate options for my clients pet's issues. I love diatomaceous earth, I use it in the garden, around the house etc. I'm relieved to see you were very specific about what type folks should get. Great usage idea, Especially for those with a large animal family. You are amazing! Thank you for sharing your holistic knowlege. ❤️

DE is great to use on feral cats, since it can be used in the places where they sleep and eat if you take care of a colony. One of my ferals has a terrible flea allergy and loses all his hair but he's also fairly tame with me and loves pets so its fairly easy to rub DE on him. A lot of vets like to say that the risk of respiratory or digestive problems is too high but if you use it safely and sparsely, its perfectly safe. Concern comes from cats licking it off of themselves but ingesting DE helps with internal parasites regardless.

DE ingested has been claimed to treat internal parasites, but that's nonsense. It kills parasites by the very sharp edges the fossilized diatoms have. When those microscopic little fossils get wet, they become mush. That mush no longer has any sharp edges - which you should be thankful for, because if it did, it would totally destroy ALL of the intestinal microbiome that the critters NEED to survive. DE works wonders OUTSIDE the body, when it's DRY, but once dampened, it's just white mud.

For years I’ve used borax brushed in the carpet, sprinkled in my dogs bed, and dusted around the outside of my house and I’ve never had to put anything on my dogs skin. It takes two weeks for the fleas to disappear completely but 100% works. Research and make your own judgement. Love your videos!!! 💕🤗
@illyanka8777
@illyanka8777 4 года назад
Please don't use borax anywhere near your pets; this can kill them. Use baking soda instead. Just because something is natural does not mean it isn't toxic. For example, mercury is purified and natural but your don't want to eat it.

Thanks - Borax also works well for control in the house
@MaryAnnNytowl
@MaryAnnNytowl 9 месяцев назад
@@illyanka8777no. Borax is nontoxic to pets externally, and is actually used in some pet care products. Borax CAN be irritating to the skin and eyes, so it is important to keep your pets away while you apply it, until you get the excess cleaned up. If ingested, though, borax can cause vomiting and diarrhea in pets, so if you suspect your pet has somehow eaten any borax, contact your veterinarian for help. But unless they EAT it, it is NOT dangerous to pets. Just don't get the dust (like any dust) in their eyes. _~shrug~_ I've used borax and DE both for fleas in the house, for my whole life, and my mother before me used borax, too (before DE was so easily located). We're talking about 6 decades, total, and we have NEVER had a pet get even mildly ill from it, in all that time. and you just have to keep them away while you put the dust down, until you're done causing any of the dust to be in the air. PLUS, if you're making dust up high enough that YOU might inhale it, YOU need to wear a dust mask.
