Programme Note (written by Ramon Lazkano):
Zilarbizi for baritone saxophone and muted piano has been commissioned by saxophonist Don-Paul Kahl. It is part of the continuity of my work with saxophone, which began with Argilunak for baritone saxophone and two cellos in 1989, followed by pieces for duo with percussion, trio with percussion and piano, and with accordion and double bass, quartet, and larger ensembles.
In Zilarbizi, mercury and its substance become the metaphor for sound to explore and unfold over time. This bright silver, quicksilver, which flows without soaking, finds its echo in the forced, saturated, and non-tempered sound of the music envisioned for the baritone saxophone, which in turn projets the sound into an echo and reverberation chamber: a piano without a pianist with the sustain pedal locked. This fraternity of two tools of sound could also be the uprooted image of a corrosive fantasy, articulated by the new conditions of this inadequate situation. Zilarbizi would, in short, be a sound fantasy whose impregnation during its duration is the result of the emergence of oxidations and the settling of melodic and harmonic attempts.
