Flesh-Eating Disease (Necrotizing fasciitis) is very rare. But believe me when I say, the bacteria (Group A streptococcus) which causes this fatal condition can be found on your skin even right now. How do these common bacteria cause such a fatal disease?Necrotizing means causing the death of tissues. Fasciitis means inflammation of the fascia. Fascia is the tissue layer situated below the skin which covers deep structures like muscles, fat, and nerves.
is a common bacteria living on our skin. They usually don’t cause us any harm. But when the skin is injured in abrasions, minor cuts, burns or insect bites, the bacteria can translocate into the deep layers of the skin and cause infections. Necrotizing fasciitis occurs when such bacteria infect the fascial layer of the skin. It can spread rapidly and involve fat, muscles, nerves and cause extensive tissue death. That's why it is known as Flesh-eating disease.
However, Group A streptococcus is not the only bacteria capable of causing this deadly disease. Sometimes a polymicrobial or a mixture of bacteriae like Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas and Clostridium can also cause this condition.
Symptoms include red or purple rash in the affected area, severe pain, and fever. As the disease progresses, you can notice blisters and black discoloration as tissues start to die.
The bacteria can even spread into the bloodstream and cause a fatal condition called sepsis. It can also release toxins into the blood and cause another fatal condition known as toxic shock syndrome. In both these conditions, the blood pressure will fall rapidly and there is a high risk of multi-organ failure.
Patients with diabetes, Kidney Disease, Liver disease, and Cancer are at high risk of developing Necrotizing fasciitis because of their poor immunity.
Doctors will use the clinical features to come to a diagnosis. Blood investigations, Taking tissue samples from the affected area and Imaging through CT or MRI scans will help to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment should be started as soon as possible. The main treatments are Intravenous antibiotics, Surgery to remove the infected tissue and supportive treatment to maintain the blood pressure. These patients are looked after in Intensive care units.
But unfortunately, Up to 1 in 3 people with necrotizing fasciitis die from the infection.

I had this disease when I was a kid in Iran. I woke up in the middle of the night screaming in agony as I felt my leg being eaten alive. It felt like being on fire and having thousands of needles aggressively being jabbed into your flesh. I was also completely paralysed. My parents didnt take me to the hospital until the next morning. By then it was too late and the first doctor said he would have to amputate my leg. I absolutely refused and made a massive fuss, eventhough I was a kid, I said if my leg goes I will 100% kill myself. After visiting two other hospitals, one doctor finally took the challenge to have a surgery on me and not go through with amputation. After 6 months of being in hospital and countless surgeries I was finally healed. Couldn't walk for another 6 months but it didnt matter because I had my leg back! This was by far the most amount of pain I've ever experienced in my life. There is literally nothing worse!

NF+ STSS combined is a nightmare medical emergency. I'm glad you fought and survived it. Cellulitis is a known complication after delivery. NF can develop from preexisting cellulitis. So you are absolutely right that OB/GYN doctors should be more aware of NF and the management.

Had an operation last summer and got it. I’ve never been in such a pain. After the operation everything was swollen and hurted so i didnt think its that special. But after 3 days of pain, the wound leaking and other gross stuff i went to the hospital, where i got operated on the same day. The doctors said i‘ve been lucky, cause if i would have waited one more day it could have been critical since it already was in my blood. Its pretty scary to know that 30% of the patients die.

@@selfesteem3447 no idea. Though I had tonsillitis (Strep A, which is the bacteria that causes NF) the week before. Because of covid I couldn't see a doctor to get antibiotics, so he phone prescribed an anti inflammatory. It has been theorised that anti inflammatory meds can stop the layers of skin from doing their job and expelling nasties, thus causing the bacteria to get where it can go pear shaped.

I had necrotizing fasciitis on my rear end. The infection had eaten a 9 inch long hole with what looks like little arms coming out of the main wound. I was very close to death. I just thank God I had a wonderful surgeon. It took many weeks and I have a huge scar to show for it. I had to wear a colostomy bag because it was so close to my bowel. I wore that for about eight months. Luckily, I was able to have it reversed but I have a nice scar down through my abdomen. It’s a terrible thing I was a lucky one.

I have gotten this thing called buckelcellulitis, (I think that’s how you spell it.) Which is cellulitis but in the mouth. It was like an itchy tumor on the side of my mouth. And at one point, it got so severe, that I was borderline sepsis, which is a less severe form of sepsis. I was in the ER and the doctors in there gave me one shot in each leg with a syringe. I saw basically completely better about 2 hours later, and my legs were so sore that I could barely walk, I had to lean on someone to go use the restroom.

I had a question, if these bacterias are so common on our skin, and people routinely gets small cuts or minute abrasions from daily activities, then why isn't it so widespread? Why isn't everyone getting NF? Is it something related to weakened immune systems? That the bacteria could enter the body and go depp into the fascia without being eliminated by the immune system? Or is there some other reason?

Just eat antibiotics before it starts. It will be fine. And try to stay good for a month. Clean with sanitizers and all.

Glad he survived! It's a serious condition. I see how people struggle with various complications following necrotizing fascitis. Great to hear that your boyfriend fought it successfully.
