Alex......OUTSTANDING!!!!! As an option coach and lifelong football fan I truly appreciate your video......very well done.....I am a firm believer in option football.....always have been.....always will be.....it will be a sad day on the Flats when Coach PJ decides to hang it up and GT goes looking for another coach.....maybe we'll get lucky and they will hire Coach Monken away from Army.....who knows???? One thing.....against an 8-man front......the playside A-back will not arc.......the playside tackle will veer release inside for the playside LB and the playside A-back will release straight upfield and look inside for the playside LB.....If the playside LB fills and attacks the FB.....then the playside A-back continues on his path and looks to block the FS......if the playside LB scrapes over the top....then, the playside A-back will block him.....and the playside tackle will elevate to block the FS........the handoff key and the pitch key still remain unblocked..... The 8-man front was a nemesis of the option, until option coaches began using the playside HB (from the old wishbone formation) to seal the playside LB.....The defensive mindset is to have the 5 technique squeeze the playside tackle, to keep the playside LB clean and allow him to scrape over the top.......which gives the defense an extra player in the perimeter.....who is not in the option count..... Great job......I have enjoyed watching your videos.....especially the offensive plays from the GT games...... Keep up the good work!!!!!! Go Jackets!!!!!!! Long live give, keep, pitch.......

THank you so much for this. THe first 2 days Ive only put in the triple, midline and rocket formations. The kids are real understanding of it and i plan on running those 3 plays for the next 2-3 weeks. Explaining the pitch key has to turn his shoulders helps also. Theres a team in our neighborhood that rotates their line and brings the lb down so he's the read key. and telling our kids the first guy outside the tackle and not the DE is automatically the key really helps them. This has helped alot

The blocking schemes are surprisingly simple compared to some of the more exotic flexbone plays we see Army and Navy run against good defenses.

This defense is especially deadly in younger teams. If a defense is not well designed, coached, and extremely disciplined, they will have tons of trouble stopping the option offenses

Hey Alex, I have a couple of questions about the triple option out of flexbone. I have run a spread offense out of gun and would like to incorporate some under center formations as well. Since we run a lot of option out of spread, I think the flexbone would be a nice addition to our option game. Here are my questions: 1. When should the TE and WR “switch” block? 2. What is the blocking scheme and reads for a defense that runs a 5-3 bear front? 3. Is it a good idea to keep the formation strictly a “tight” flexbone and have the WR’s split in?

I meant wingback instead of TE

“What the gun-zone option tries to accomplish is to see how the backside defensive end and the outside linebacker adjust to the shift. The quarterback will base his decisions on what these two players do. For example, he snaps the ball and prepares to hand it off to the running back with one eye on the defensive end. If the DE chases the running back down the line of scrimmage, the QB keeps the ball and turns his attention to the OLB with the slot receiver now his option. If the LB commits to the QB, he pitches, if not, he keeps it.” Could you draw this out/explain this more simply?

Did I say this? I'm not sure I've talked about "gun-zone option". I think it's just explaining Triple but they mistakenly said "backside" which might cause some confusion.

That switch block was a thing of beauty. When blocking, would you suggest "chop" blocking (going for the legs) like the line at Tech does sometime?
@guitartinman
@guitartinman 7 лет назад
Chop blocking is a 15 yard penalty. Cut blocking is legal. Chop blocks are not.

Hi, I have a question about the time 5:10. Why is the LT trying to do outside release? Is it better to do inside release to block backers?

How do you block against a 5-3?
@bjebb58
@bjebb58 6 лет назад
Great video--easy to understand. I would maybe have your PST outside release against the 4i and immediately attack the play side linebacker instead of the safety when facing an odd front (3-4). If anything, the PSG and PST should double the OLB and then work to the safety. Thanks for the breakdown coach!

Can you use zone blocking in the flexbone ? Since the Falcons are a zone blocking team

when running the play to the 3 tech side in a 4-3, is the outside backer the pitch read or is it the safety?
@colonelrobertsjr.7882
@colonelrobertsjr.7882 6 лет назад
John Delligatti Vs Cover 2 the OLB would have outside contain due to the read end forcing the keeper so he'd be your pitch read and Vs Cover 3 The Strong Safety would be your read due to being the alley defender

Coach, would you ever suggest a triple team by C, RG & LG vs a NT in 52 defense as some Flexbone teams do?
@johnbutler3032
@johnbutler3032 7 лет назад
No shade. Just concerned about center blocking a good NT. I want to dent the defense and thought maybe a triple would do it. Then, the guards can peel off to block the LBers over them. Of if the NT would slant, the off guard would come off. I agree with your answer. Would the IV & mid line blocking be any different vs. a 52?
@johnbutler3032
@johnbutler3032 7 лет назад
The backside guard would peel off to block the BSLBer after 3 or 4 steps.

In west TN, we see a lot of odd fronts. How do you handle an eagle front (DE, DT, and DE head up on guard, center, and guard)?
@seanmele9611
@seanmele9611 7 лет назад
Run rocket toss until the cows come home. You won't have to block any of the eagle linemen and you can get your center and guards up to the second and third level.

Hey, man! Thanks so much! This video really helped me understand this more smoothly. Could you explain the situation with the backside DE and backside OLB? So does the play ever have a situation where the backside DE could bite on the dive, then the QB keeps & runs the opposite direction of where the backside DE is running toward (down the LOS to get the dive back), and then pitches off to the slot, FB, or whatever option player joins the QB’s run route for a possible pitch (in which they’re left facing that backside OLB? So basically a play where the keys aren’t on the playside anymore, like a trick. Have an IG account we could chat on? I drew something up I’d like someone to look at.

hello, I have ran the option offense before as a player but we did not do it out of the flexbone offense. I am in the coaching profession now and where I coach, this offense would fit very well with some of the teams. I want to try and run this offense but out of the pistol. Would you have any information on that, would it really make much of difference?
