Hi Carrie, have they checked to make sure there aren’t any leaking pipes or drains in the Apartment building that may be causing water build upo which leads to the mold??? I am an Engineer and know that leaks are the main culprit for these issues, don’t let them try to give you a BS run around!!! Also, don’t sleep in the room with the mold growth!!! Good Luck! 👍

Mold is SO bad to breathe in and is debilitating to some people. I can't believe they told you it was safe to sleep in your room! Glad to see the inspector told them that wiping it off the walls was not sufficient. The apt complex probably knows that they are in the wrong and have done shoddy maintenance and are trying to blame you to get out of fines/extra expenses on their end. It may be helpful to get an air purifier to put in your room to help with any other issues and help with the cat hair/dander that you may encounter.

Hi Carrie! I had the same problem with mold. It was the outside wall of my bedroom. They had to open up the entire wall, put dehumidifiers in the room and I couldn't use the room for 6 weeks. I got a reduction in my rent because I couldn't use the room. Good luck Carrie! Take care, mold is nothing to fool around with.

Mold is a biohazard and thus the presence of it deems the residence unliveable. It is the owner’s responsibility to fix it regardless of who is at fault. You’re renting the unit - you’re responsible for the contents within (furniture, clothes, etc) but the walls, appliances, etc is up to them. They’re exhausting to fight with but if you get to know your rights - check all the paperwork you signed; there should be soemthing about responsibility - then they don’t have a leg to stand on. I don’t know about US, but in Canada, you have the right to move out without penalty or obligation to pay for the remainder of the lease, if this isn’t fixed and promptly and SAFELY. Wiping the walls does NOT remove mold. It’s a bandaid solution to a bigger problem. Personally, I have a suspicion it was there before and just resurfaced BECAUSE they clearly don’t care enough to properly remediate. Mold remediation is a multi-day event. Spritzing bleach for a few mins is NOT remediation. I would threaten to sue if they don’t pull their socks up. Look into the bylaws - that would help you.

If they really cared, they would move you, and your cats into a different apartment unit.

I’m a FA ✈️ and a Nurse and any mold is absolutely no good. If, it was to get into our sinuses and flying…forget about it. Sinuses infected, migraines, sinus pressure and if, it gets into out lungs 🫁 forget about it again. Since you are in Florida, a dehumidifier would help to suck up the moisture from the humidity. Yeah I would not renew my lease and leave them a honest review about the mold.

All the red flags from that apartment complex is shocking! Glad that you are not renewing with them. Cant believe they have not given you another apartment or accommodation to stay at while this gets resolved. Stay safe and healthy

I don't think my previous comment ever posted..... Document everything. Also, look into getting a free mold inspection if anyone offers one near you. Amazon also sells mold tests and I would most definitely get one of those. Rental companies will do everything and anything to shift the blame and keep your damage deposit. (I worked for a senior rental complex at one time) Mold can be so dangerous. Good luck to you!

Carrie, can you get copies of all your maintenance requests? If you can, print them off and keep them. Also, get a air purifier if possible, also this may sound silly, but keep track of when they start those machines and when it stops. Watch your electricity bill, you should not have to pay for the electrical uses by those machines. Be proactive, and check all of your belongings carefully, if there is any mold on your stuff take a picture and bring it to their attention and insist upon the management reimburse you. Good luck.

How are they leaving you in the apartment??!! When I was in college they moved me apartments for mold, within 24 hours! They had to have known that mold existed before they moved you in… that didn’t just appear (probably painted over). Ask to move or report them to the city.

This happened to me at an old apartment I lived in. You should be demanding they provide temporary accommodations until the mold situation is taken care of. Either another unit or a hotel. It’s not safe at all for you or your cats to be in the unit breathing that in. You don’t know the extent of the damage behind the walls and several types mold are toxic to cats 😿 I would get yourselves out of there asap until the situation is properly taken care of.

Carrie Ann, because of the mold, you can legally break the lease. That's a serious health hazard. Don't let that landlord intimidate you. I'm surprised you didn't see the mold when inspecting before signing the lease. Magnesium can be mixed with melatonin for sleep. The two work best together. Caffeine, alcohol, sugar, and eating too late/close to bedtime all contribute big time to anxiety.

Again, it's so great that you are back. Regarding the mold issue and my experience. Thankfully, I live on a 2nd floor without an issue. However, the 1st floor at my complex is a nightmare. Here's what I know, many all of the 1st floor ( 3 years old building) has black mold coming up thru the carpet, it's all over and the complex doesn't do much to fix the problem. Get out in October and try a 2nd floor. Good luck

As someone who lives in Miami, a 15 minute commute can easily turn into 45- 1hr because of road rage and accidents. Always better to be safe than sorry! And I’m so sorry about the mold, unfortunately Florida laws don’t really protect renters unless lawyers get involved. Hopefully the apartment complex does their due diligence and fixes the problem (properly). I know I have been screwed over twice by landlords/ apartment complexes here and it’s the worst.

I am so happy you are back! I take magnesium potassium aspartate every night! It helps relax your muscles too as well as help with sleep. Your vlogs are amazing!

I have two kitties and I could feel your stress with the delayed flight! But my previous apartment was super humid, like the clothes in my closet were damp. Of course the apartment tried to gaslight me and tell me there was no mold. They did end up giving me a humidifier which seemed to help a lot. But still! In my state, as long as your apartment is doing something about the mold I don’t think you can take any legal action.

I’m a top tier loyalty member with Hyatt and I so agree that most Hyatt Place hotels are in serious need of renovation. Hopefully since people are spending money on travel that they will start to renovate more properties! 🤞

Hey Carrie! Used to have mould especially during winter we often use bleach spray or anti mould and that seems to help temporarily. But we have to close that room and open the window because we have a dog. Thanks again for the video! From Australia.

I lived in Miami for 3 years-very humid. Honestly, it doesn't surprise me what the complex is trying to pull on you. I couldn't get out of Miami fast enough.

Carrie, same thing happened with my house. A leak in the roof caused mold to spread throughout my back bedroom. They had to completely redo and tear down walls. I was out of my house for a month. When they tore the walls down several of the construction crew got really sick plus mold exposure can cause a lot of health problems 😢

South Florida girlie and Virgo sister here (Aug 30), I had a mold situation in my apartment too and a friend’s mom came in clutch for me but basically cleaning items/walls with a bleach and water combo + using the Ozone machine worked for me. I believe they ran the machine while I was out for 8 hours (it has a timer) and then you’re able to go back in after some time. The complex brought in a dehumidifier too at some point but overall I think the ozone machine was what kept the mold from coming back

I had surgery in Vegas and stayed in that Hyatt. Then, when we went to visit again, this is where we stayed. It’s nice and quiet off the strip

I just as just in Vegas last week and when we landed around 9pm it was 110 degrees when I got into my Lyft to go to the hotel. The heat was a huge factor in all the plans I made through the week.

I had a mold issue before its not fun! In my basement I had some mold I washed all the blankets and clothing I had in storage, I washed it put it into a garbage bag and put it in a tote just to double seal my clothing and blankets from getting mold on them. Also they told you its safe to be sleeping in that, No its not!

There are different types of mold .Usually when you can see it it's not the really bad kind .It's still not okay and they should move you to different spot another apartment /hotel.Definitely takes time for mold like that to grow .You just moved in.

Carrie, whenever you have time you should definitely try some Puerto Rican restaurants in Miami. You will love a Jibarito sandwich with arroz con gandules and a coquito rum drink. There's a lot of Puerto Ricans out in Miami so enjoy the cooking. Cheers, Isabel Mendez from Chicago

Mold is a very common problem in Florida and in most of the Ohio Valley or midwest in general. Simple Green works really well to clean it off walls. I'm not a fan of long car trips or really long flights. I start to get stir crazy after a couple of hours. I can handle the Louisville - New York flights because they are less than two hours but those Louisville - Los Angeles ones are taxing. I once knew a retired USAF guy who was on a B-52 crew and sometimes they went on training flights that were 20+ hours. I can only imagine how fatiguing that was.

I live in Florida from Miami and had the same issue. Had to pay for an inspector and also got an attorney. Also make sure you continue to make the appropriate documentation of it all. Also after they have “cleaned it”, mold kits are sold at local appliance relators where you can check and document that as well. If you feel like your health has been compromised due to the exposure to the mold, go to your primary care so you can have that documented as well. Also an air purifier wouldn’t be a bad thing… Check your air filters regularly too!! Wish you the best of luck 👑💚

Florida girl here. Dehumidifier and desiccant packs to hang in the closet until you move. They both help.

Hi Carrie, MAJOR BUMMER! Some thoughts: 1) Some say that mold can be grounds for legally breaking your lease, getting your security deposit back. Check this with eiher a state or city agency, or with legal blogs, a lawyer. Go to city hall if you have to and ask the county clerk or major's office. There are likely lots of "grey areas" but just on intuition, I'd stay away from any "withholding rent schemes". Very messy and no one looks good in court if they don't pay rent, even if they are right. Pay the rent, sue to get it back, if necessary. 2) This could be your out --There are likely rules that the landlord is required to REMEDY (not just reduce the problem) the issue with an inspection within a certain time after you've provided written notice, usually 7 days.If you consult a lawyer, you might consider a real estate lawyer--they are hard core and know a lot of things from the landlord perspective, including their tricks. 3) This could be your trump card -- There might be rules about landlords' requirements to disclose mold issues before a lease signing -- hard to believe the mold issue started the day you moved in. Talk to your neighbors. Sure, it's hear-say, but it's a start. Maybe they also have issues. Maybe they know the previous tenant. Maybe they have notices written by the landlord about mold issues! 4) Check the local environmental protection agency website, consumer protection websites, tenants websites. 5) I know it's a major, major pain in the butt right now for you, but go for clear solutions -- either an inspector (check credentials) can absolutely certify that the mold is gone or move. An ozone machine can help kill mold and spores but it does not eliminate the cause or prevent recurrances (AND ozone is no joke -- people, animals, plants and leather MUST ABSOLUTELY be OUT of the room for at least 4 hours after use (ozone breaks down into oxygen at the rate of 1/2 per 30 mins. So, after 4 hours 1/128th is left -- and air out the room. But you can smell ozone, so you know when it's gone. It can take a day! Talk to people and gently inquire if they know anything about how to deal with this issue in Florida, particularly in Miami -- you're not alone. You'll get through this. God bless!

Hey I hope things get better for you soon, mould can make breathing difficult if you have asthma, prob best to end your lease rental with them on this basis and do a quick search of the area of apartments to let. Secure a new rental on the understanding that you are attempting to end your current one due to mould in the property. I am in the uk so I know there are different legalities but go on that basis and hopefully you will get sorted soon. Take care..Louise xxx

Mold is no joke! I can't believe they didnt do anything other than like wipe the walls. No no, thats so bad! Im so sorry you are having to deal with it. We did a huge reno in our house because of mold. You dont mess with it. They should have moved you for sure. Hopefully you get a good resolution and soon.

I had mold in my linen closet where I kept my towels. Of course the landlord tried to blame me. On the other side of the wall was the shower. I ended up moving out. They tore out the shower after I moved and found mold in the walls. There was a leak from the unit above me that dripped down into my walls. Some landlords are just not helpful. Glad you are going to move when your lease is up.

Ugh good luck with the mold situation. As long as they are fixing it, not much you can do. When I had an issue and my things got damaged, I was told they had zero obligations to pay for damage and that my renter's insurance should cover it. I didn't have renter's insurance😅😢. I recommend getting insurance.

We sold a house in Florida because we couldn’t take the mold. Everything smelled of mold and I couldn’t get rid of the smell. Even my pots and pans stunk. Good luck and hopefully it can be remediated.

Oh my goodness. Yes, please, dont renew your lease. No no no. Thats a bunch a BS. I thought legally they had to move you but maybe thats dependent on state. I had water leak/damage and they made me move to another unit asap. They said due to damage and mold concerns they wanted to get it fixed. I was moved within 4 days and they paid for my movers which was amazing!

Magnesium Glycinate Can penetrate the cell fully. I suggest if you're going to do any type of magnesium supplement you get that one. Very important. Especially for some that are like I take it and it doesn't work. Get Magnesium Glycinate ...

How horrible! 😮 sorry you have to deal with the mold. Laundry mats have laundry services where they wash/dry/fold your clothes. Maybe that might be an option as they deal with your mold!

This happened to me. Legally in my state there was nothing I could do. The a/c carried the mold throughout the entire apartment. I couldn't see it but the inspector (that I hired) found it even in the fridge. I wouldn't keep pets in there. I lost so many things because you have to wash the items in hot water and things were ruined. Even the coffee maker tested positive. Do your own testing and it may get you out of your lease.

Carrie, I am so sorry you are dealing with all of this. Please be careful with the mold. Can be very dangerous for you and the cats. Shame on your complex. They should have moved you into a different unit. I would suggest keeping a log of what’s going on, as well as any receipts for items you have to purchase or replace because of the mold. If you do need to take legal action in the future, it may help.

I hope they fix your mold problem if not i wouldn't pay my rent i know someone that died from black mold you don't mess with that If they don't fix your mold problem call the better business bureau and don't pay your rent until they fix the problem you can get very sick from black mold and spraying it with bleach or chemicals doesn't get rid of it you take care and stay healthy your a beautiful person i hope you find the right guy someday instead of working alot money is great but happiness is even better to share it with someone ♥️👍😎

Carrie contact the BBB and file a complaint formally. They have 30 days to respond to any complaints made. I would also figure out what company owns the complex and make a complaint with them.

Mold is a pretty common issue in south Florida, the humidity doesn’t help.
