The fact that Matt Younkin, EAA 864693, came to Oshkosh last summer and made a powerful impression with a Beech 18 is hardly breaking news. After all, Matt has been dazzling audiences with his standout Twin Beech aerobatic routine for the last 15 years. But, as it turned out, 2021 was a little different. This time, Matt brought a second Twin Beech, a clean and tidy example of an easily overlooked part of aviation history. That airplane, N18RY, a Beech E-18S, didn’t come to Oshkosh to perform. It came to teach. And, more importantly, it came to listen.

I flew the Twin Beech for seven straight years in Air Mail and Freight Dog “mode”. Some of my happiest times were in the middle of the night somewhere over the middle of the country headed back home again. I wound up as a 747 Captain by the end of my career, but always looked back on my BE-18 days with great memories. Thanks for this video. It’s a keeper.

I have many hundreds of jumps out of Beech 18's, mostly over Roy E Ray airport (5R7) in Bayou LaBatre Alabama from 1976 well into the late 80's.

I flew with a woman I was Co Captain with on the 747-400 doing transpacific flights. She bought the Beech 18 that she got much of her flight time in, and fixed it up as the freighter it always was. But flew it gently much like putting an old revered workhorse out to pasture to enjoy its old age. The pilot by the way is a very attractive woman.Who obviously loves that airplane.
