One person has been confirmed dead and multiple others injured, after a Singapore Airlines plane made an emergency landing in Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport. Flight SQ321 was flying from London's Heathrow Airport to Singapore when it encountered severe turbulence and was diverted to the Thai capital. Thai authorities said the deceased is a 73-year-old British national with a heart condition. After landing in Thailand, 18 passengers were hospitalised while 12 others were treated at hospitals. May Wong reports.

I've experienced severe turbulence before when the plane was trying to descend through severe gusty wind conditions. The entire plane felt like it was going to crush, with severe bumps, shaking back and forth, rocking side to side, ups and down dropping like a roller coaster, knocking all the food trays off the shelves. Everyone was so scared, and I wouldn't stop praying to God the entire time. It was so severe that I was still shaken up even after we landed and on our entire 3 hr car ride back home. I had a panic attack. All the passengers on our flight also thought we were going to crash and die. I can only imagine what this flight went through 😢.

Turbulences are usually uncommon, when they do happen, it's more of light or moderate where injuries are still not too common [maybe a few bumps but nothing serious, sometime moderate turbulence can cause injuries]. Severe turbulence are quite rare since pilots would usually avoid regions where they believe turbulence will occur. In this case, it might be clear air turbulence where it was unexpected and to make things worst, it's a severe type. That is why seat belts should be on whenever you are seated even if the seat belt lights are off. You can still go to the toilet, take a short walk to stretch your legs, etc, as necessary since turbulence don't happen all the time or throughout the whole flight.

I was briefed by a steward in 2001 about such harmful consequences of turbulences. I've always fastened my seat belt when sitting, ever since. People get way too comfortable with safety when flying. A lot of injuries could have been prevented with such simple routine.

Yep Boeing builds a tough, strong, safe aircraft. That’s why they were able to land safely in spite for the extreme turbulence they encountered.

I have been traveling since 1997, probably already more than 400 flights up to now… been in 26 hours flight from Jakarta to Rio de Janeiro or Jakarta to Houston in several occasions, but the most scary severe turbulence that I ever experienced actually in 45 minutes flight in Indonesia. Nothing to do with the long haul or short flight, you just need in a wrong time and a wrong spot to experience severe turbulence. That’s why you need to wear your seat belt while seated.

One report said “ aircraft plunges 6,000’ “ fact is the decent of 6,000’ took 3 minutes , or 2000’ per minute to descend, hardly a “ plunge “ in all likelihood the crew made a controlled descent to get out of the turbulence.
@Jack-hy2ki
@Jack-hy2ki 12 дней назад
That's 10 meter per second. Normal? 🙄
@davevictoriadriskell2111
@davevictoriadriskell2111 12 дней назад
@@Jack-hy2ki Not sure about meters, but considering the crew didn’t know if there was any structural damage to the aircraft, they descended as quickly as safely possible to get out of the turbulence, there rate of decent was approximately 2000’ per minute.
@RahulRk-tr7ot
@RahulRk-tr7ot 12 дней назад
@@Jack-hy2ki yes. 2000 feet/minute is pretty normal.

That is the average calculations though. It could have plunged 2000 in 5 seconds, and then another 4000 in 2 minutes 55 seconds subsequently.

@davevictoriadriskell2111 12 дней назад
@@davidlum2001 however the reports said it was 6,000’ in 3 minutes, have to wait and see what the FDR actually confirms what happened. Until then anything is just speculation.

Tracking data captured by FlightRadar24 and analysed by The Associated Press showed the Singapore Airlines flight cruising at an altitude of 37,000 feet. Just after 0800 GMT, the Boeing 777 suddenly and sharply pitched down to 31,000 feet over the span of some three minutes, the data shows. The aircraft stayed at 31,000 feet for just under 10 minutes before rapidly descending and landing in Bangkok .
@scienceevolves4417
@scienceevolves4417 12 дней назад
Yet the incident happened at 7.50 so try again with your sensionationalism.😊 A 6000ft drop over 3 mins pre-landing is completely normal and safe manoeuvre.

@@scienceevolves4417 The Singapore Airlines Flight #SQ321 experienced severe turbulence over Myanmar's Irrawaddy Basin, causing a 7000 feet drop in about three minutes. Such a steep fall is not normal and can lead to injuries among passengers. The flight departed from London Heathrow Airport and was en route to Singapore's Changi Airport when the incident occurred. The Boeing 777-300ER aircraft made an unscheduled landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok at approximately 3:58 p.m. local time Bangkok is in the UTC+7 time zone, which is 7 hours ahead of GMT Therefore, the turbulence likely occurred sometime before 3:58 p.m. Bangkok time, which would be before 8:58 GMT (3:58 PM Bangkok time - 7 hours = 8:58 AM GMT) The exact time is not provided, but it was likely around 8:00 GMT or shortly before.

All respect to the two pilots for managing and taking control over the situation, this could have become much worse had they not dealt with this as true professionals. The pilots are the true heros here. Imagine having to deal with that and then from gaining control over the plane to landing the plane. They did an amazing job. x

It’s well advised to keep the seat belts always fasten even if the seat belts sign has been turned off . This is due to unexpected turbulence . While crossing equator there are high chances of tropical storms which can cause moderate to severe turbulence . Sometimes the clear air turbulence can also be an issue so it’s better to keep the seat belts securely fastened .
