WOW! I didn't know that! I'm so careful (and apprehensive) when turning from base to final, thinking it will naturally stall if I'm close to the stall, so I usually push the nose down a bit to increase airspeed. I didn't realise that I'm safe as long as I don't pull the yoke back and just let the nose do what it wants! Thank you, excellent advice. I shall practice this as you suggest. Great lesson! 👏👏👏

just remember to practice at altitude.. just in case if you do pull the yoke a bit much on recovery!

I saw this concept about the turn at slow speed a few weeks ago in another video and was amazed that I had never heard or thought of it. Never came up in my PPL training. I went out the next day and did this a lot and it has made me feel so much more comfortable close to the ground.

I feel that there is a lack of education in the PPL if people aren't understanding this concept of load factor being the primary variable that increases your stall speed in a turn and how that affects AOA which then leads to the stall. To me this is a fundamental knowledge point that should be drilled home and understood before going solo. Would save so many stall spin accidents in my opinion.

I use that near stall turn to practice my in possible turns turns, keeping the nose down you turn more steeply to get the 180 degree+ turn!

A spiral is a good and a safe way to descend in a tiny space between clouds if needed.

Is it safe to assume that this sort of ability is second nature to glider pilots?

Jason, just finished watching ur interview with Dan and Christy at Osh. I wish I was not so far from you--KOPL, south central La. I could use a good week with you! A 65 yr old pilot that has become somewhat skiddish!!

Great vid! For sure something I struggle with on base to final is allowing to make that hard turn if needed. Good insight to practice for visual reference and build trust.

Love this, I like to practice these skills. Doing tailwheel training we have done all kinds of stalls including turning stalls. Practicing crosswind landing and high speed taxi's on one wheel have certainly made me more proficient with directional control. Even had another instructor comment on it during crosswind landings for a checkout in a plane that I hadn't flown in a few months.

Nice video Jason. I use the paper trick when students are rather new and seem to be fixating on the instruments. Also make them hold the yolk with no more than 3 fingers, seemed to fix a lot of overcontrolling issues they were having.

My primary CFI would put a piece of tape over the pitot tube and make me fly 10 patterns. I never look at my airspeed indicator in the pattern. I look out the window and fly/land the plane. It's not that hard.

Thx Jason. I really enjoy your videos. After getting my PP Certificate in a PA28-180, I’m getting checked out in an amazing C172I-180. Full glass cockpit. I’m really enjoying fly this airplane. Looking forward to taking it to Catalina! 🤙🏻😎

question: about the twin. would you say the diamond da-62 would offer the same "statistical danger" as that twin you flew where the engine failed? or could you say there is a mark able difference?

That's the point of the impossible turn --- bank hard and maintain best glide, NOT ALTITUDE, and you're fine
@TheFinerPoints
@TheFinerPoints 10 месяцев назад
👍🏻 Maybe not fine but it’s the best you can do for sure

no matter what happens, hit the ground wings level and not stalled, even if that means cutting the turn short in order to level the wings and crash off airport.
@eds.173
@eds.173 10 месяцев назад
And you maintain best glide by increasing pitch (again not altitude)
