Flite Fest 2023: Guapo Flight and Gear Failure

The 'Guapo', an airframe built by students from Perdue university, lost it's main gear during the takeoff run at Flite Fest 2023. She flew well otherwise and they successfully brought her down gently in the cornfield after a successful sortie.

Don't feel bad. The runways at Flite Fest are better than nothing but they break more than a few sets of gear each year. Trust me, I know :)

@@CarlLydickRC from my perspective I thought the grass took out the gear but from this video it looks like it got caught in the runway tarp. The reason it went off the runway was that the nose steering failed.

Lol... the way that gear snagged the runway if it hadn't ripped off the airframe may have been damaged beyond repair.

It almost looked like that was on purpose. After seeing so many catapult launched UAVs it didnt seem abnormal haha

True, but this was definitely NOT by design. That Geotex runway is only put down for the event and there is absolutely NO surface preparation under it. If you depart the runway your best bet is to stick with the bumpy grass. This was not the only model damaged by catching the edge of that geotex

the pilot should check that he got steering fist, second he lost control because he gunned the throttle, then he lost control, try to return to the runway, when out the runway and when he when into the runway the edge of the tarp lift up, and took the main gear up. They need better pilot. rocky mistake, he almost destroy the plane.

That was pretty interesting. Listened to the commentary.. thought... hrrrmmm Flite test, Flite Fest, is hobby level fun. then I hear all them sponsors and purpose and potential use thinking... is now the best time for people to be aligning with the military for RC projects... Might be just me we all know I dont think like todays humanz.

55 lbs sounds heavy. They need an experienced Weights Engineer on that ream. Also, who ever did the stress calcs need to look at their assumptions.

From the pre-flight conversation with the pilot it was not at 55lbs for this flight. I actually don't think 55lbs is bad given the capabilities on-board.
