In this video I will show you a time lapse build of the Flite Test FT Edge 540. The build follows the Flite Test build video and design. Nevertheless I made some modifications which are highlighted during the video.

Specs:
After trying different motors and props I finally found a setup that fits perfectly for me.
Motor: T-Motor AT2321 1250kv
Prop: Aeronaut CAM-Carbon Light-Prop 9x5
Battery: SLS Quantum 4S 2450mAh
ESC: Graupner BRUSHLESS CONTROL + T 60
Receiver: Graupner GR-12 HoTT, 6 chanel
Servos: Graupner DES 281 BB MG for elevator and rudder, EMAX ES09MD for ailerons
Paint: Dupli Color Platinum Traffic Orange (719813), Black (720956), Dupli Color Plastic Primer (557163) (for improving the adhesion on the package tape)
Weight: 1080g (AUW) incl. paint
Average flight time: approx. 6:15 min.

GoPro Hero 4 Black
Microphone:
Rode NTUSB

Your build quality is admirable. I used a 'Sig' WW2 bubble canopy turned backwards and trimmed to fit on mine.

Danke! Erstflug hatte ich inzwischen schon, muss aber noch ein wenig am Antrieb feilen. Entweder hatte ich zu viel Leistung (Motor mega heiß) oder zu wenig Leistung. Fliegt aber ansonsten super. Für's Finish bin ich noch am überlegen wie ich's mache.

Awesome build. I have the FMS edge 800 mm bird that I haven't flown yet. I haven't seen kits like these before. Pretty interesting.

Thanks! Foam board is a really interesting material. Such a build goes really quick and the cost is rather low.

Ist'n schönes KFZ (KunstFlugZeug :D ) geworden, komme gerade erst ins modellflug-hobby rein und drifte eher in Richtung 3D ab. Hab vor n paar Wochen die FT 3D gebaut und warte noch auf meinen Transmitter. Like und Abo dagelassen :)

Danke, fliege zwar schon lange RC aber ernsthafter Kunstflug ist noch nicht meins 😂 Freue mich schon über einen wackeligen Messerflug. An 3D ist schon gar nicht zu denken. Vielleicht sollte ich erst mal am Simulator üben. Danke nochmal für like und Abo 👍

Great plane and great build video - nice idea with the Motor Mount reinforcement - I had to build several motor mount after some crashes - this part was suffering most on nose-first-impacts. After some month of flying this plane I had to reinforce the actual Wing forward / backward placement - this got quiete a lot worn out.

Thanks for your feedback. What motor / prop combination do you use? Currently I am running a FT c-pack radial with a 10x5 on 3s… not happy with the thrust and the motor already gets quite hot, so I don‘t dare to run it on 4s

@@bavarian_rc I use Motor 2218 1180kV, 35A esc and the prop is currently an APC 11x8.5e - works great with 4s 1550mAh battery. Actually the Prop was just lying around when I broke the original one which came with the Power Pack C - but so far no problems. By the way - I did a short review after 1 year of FT Edge on my channel - maybe it gives you some hints or new ideas - or just makes you laugh :-)

Nice build! Looks very clean🙂 Just one question, do you think it is 100% necessary to add the wooden wingspar? I have finished building mine, and I'm starting to regret not adding a spar. Although, It feel very strong as mine is now, especially with the tape. Also, how do you find the Flite test c power pack? I have a 3542 (2820 stator size) 1250kv motor in mine with a 10x5 propellor on 4s, and the plane is very fast.

Thanks! 😊 What I can say is that with the spar I have had no issues at all with pulling off some massive high G maneuvers. In your case I wouldn’t rework the wing just to add a spar. I would simply fly it and in case you notice any fatigue in the wing you could still do some surgery. I have tested the FT c pack motor before and always had issues of either not enough thrust (on 3 cells) or the motor getting too hot, especially with a 10x5 on 4 cells. Finally the T-motor solution works fine for me with tons of power. Still I have to be a bit careful about the motor temperature though.

Thanks man! The spinner is a custom 3D printed part I designed myself. Check the link to the STL files in the description. Diameter is 58mm, length is 75mm. Most of the time I am flying without the spinner for better cooling of the motor and to help with the CG.

Did you get this kit pre cut or did you cut it yourself? Where in europe can I buy this paper backed foam. I cant find it anywhear.

I cut it myself (by hand). A couple of years ago the flight test kits and also the foamboard were available through Graupner and later through Lindinger.at. Unfortunately there are no sources in Europe at the moment. Flite Test announced just recently that they are working on a world wide distribution network and the first one opened in South Africa but no precise plans for Europe yet (at least not communicated). So either you would need to order the kit in the US or wait until a European distribution is started. I already tried other (European) foamboard but it is much heavier.

Hello Sir, I enjoyed your build very much. Only question I have is, isn't it possible to build the wing tips using foamboard techniques instead of 3d printing it in plastic?

Thanks for your feedback, great that you liked it. I think building the winglets with foamboard techniques could be possible to some extend, but definitely not the exact same shape as the 3d part as you won‘t be able to have such compound curves in foamboard. But in a simplified form it could be possible. The original FT design is proposing flat side force generators at the wing tip.

Danke, freut mich dass es Dir gefällt. Die Verstärkungen sind 3D gedruckte Plättchen mit 1,5mm Dicke. Kannst Du aber auch aus dünnem Sperrholz oder Plastik machen wenn Du keinen 3D Drucker hast.

Hier der Link zu den STL Files (drive.google.com/file/d/1aqik_iY6ENZnK78V5DNn14qACmQ-vDgf/view?usp=sharing) ... werde ich auch in die Videobeschreibung reinkopieren. Ich habe auch den Spinner und den Wing Protector mit ins ZIP File gepackt. Derzeit fliege ich ohne Spinner, da der Motor etwas arg warm wird und dann das PLA sich ganz leicht verformt und somit der Spinner lose wird. Sobald ich mal Zeit habe werde ich auf ein anderes Motor Setup gehen und dann wird wieder mit Spinner geflogen. Schaut einfach besser aus.

Ich bin auch immer froh wenn ich bei anderen schauen kann wie sie’s gemacht haben. In den Bauvideos meiner Eigenkonstruktionen (Noratlas und Heinkel 219) stecken noch mehr interessante Ideen drin, einfach mal reinschauen, wenn ihr‘s nicht schon gemacht habt. In den Videobeschreibungen sind auch immer die STL files enthalten. Bei Fragen einfach Kommentar schreiben. Viel Spaß und viel Erfolg beim Vater-Sohn Projekt. Mein jüngster ist auch 7, will aber lieber „Freestyle“ Basteln statt Flieger bauen... aber den krieg ich schon noch so weit.

My AUW is 1080g with a 4S 2450 mAh battery. Without battery I am at 835g. All this is including the painting.

Yes, I used the tiling function in Acrobat Reader to print on A4 with crop marks and then taped them together

Good idea! I already did a chuck glider conversion to an A-10 (check the video on my YT channel). Concerning foamboard designs I am still working on some other projects. So a micro A-10 would have to wait. But you could check the flite test forum, I think there are some A-10 designs available.

I am using the Flite Test waterresistant foamboard. The thickness is about 4.75mm.

Momentan dürfte es sehr schwer sein in Europa dieses Foamboard zu bekommen. Bis vor ca. 2 Jahren hat Lindinger.at das originale Flite Test Foamboard aus USA importiert. Seit Corona ist dieser Vertriebsweg offensichtlich zum Erliegen gekommen. Leider gibt es in Europa nichts vergleichbares. Die hiesigen Foamboards sind viel zu schwer. Bleibt eigentlich nur der Bezug aus USA bei Flite Test… aber das ist recht kostspielig für eine große Kiste Foamboard. Am besten geht noch sich ein fertig gelasertes Kit bei Flite Test zu bestellen.

Hi, ich habe mir eine Kiste Foamboard bestellt als es noch bei Lindinger verfügbar war. Zum schneiden gibt es mehrere Möglichkeiten, entweder lasern, mit nem Nadelcutter schneiden oder von Hand mit dem Messer schneiden. Laser ist mir zu teuer, mein Nadelcutter ist noch nicht fertig, somit schneide ich nach wie vor von Hand. Dauert für so einen Flieger rund 3 Stunden um alles von Hand zu schneiden. Mein allererstes Foamboard Modell, die FT Viggen, hab ich mir damals in USA bestellt. Hat rund 2 Wochen gedauert und kostet halt Zoll und Umsatzsteuer. Mit so einem sog. speed build kit das sehr präzise gelasert ist geht der Bau natürlich sehr schnell.

Today I have the Flite Test Radial C 2218/1180kV installed. Not happy with the thrust level on a 10x5 prop and will try a more beafy motor

Finally tested my new setup today and I am more than happy with the performance. T-Motor AT2321 1250kv with a 9x5 prop on 4S. This setup produces more than 500W of Power with a theoretical thrust of 1.9 kg

Well, looks like cardboard, isn’t it? Actually it is not. The material is called foam board. It is a 4.5mm foam layer in the middle which is covered by a special water resistant paper on both sides. This makes it cheap, strong and easy to work with.

prop look smaller on this plane. but it flies so well. but have you try the larger prop and see how's it flies with larger prop yet? but great video! 🤙🏼👊🏼

Thanks, great that you liked the video. I have tried different motors (e.g. Graupner Ultra 2816 1500KV, Ultra 2812 1200KV, FT Radial Radial 2218/1180kV and finally T-Motor AT2321 1250kv). The Graupner 2816 was only possible to be operated with a 9x5 Graupner E-Prop but the motor got very hot end eventually burned through. The Graupner 2812 only worked with a 8x5 E-Prop but had not enough power. The FT Radial was tested with 10x5 with moderate power but the motor again got very hot. Finally the T-Motor is the best setup with a 9x5 Cam Carbon Light prop producing almost 600W. It still gets quite warm but it is manageable.
