argh, I couldn't wait for you to release the video, so I built my own v-tail quad using the plans for your original tricopter body. however, I didn't know that there was a v-tail option in the settings, so I set it up as a normal quad. funnily enough, it few fine! however, it had a tendency to kick pretty badly in the wind, and was difficult to get set up correctly.
@EliBenShoshan
@EliBenShoshan 11 лет назад
I would love to see a video where you have two cameras. One on the quadcopter and the other on the controls. As a noob, I would love to learn how you setup your transmitter and how you make the quadcopter perform the tricks that you have it perform such as the flips and the quick turns.

wouldn't you want the rotors mounted the other direction? it would be more stable if they faced outward away from each other. if they're facing in won't the thrust cross itself and make a lot of turbulence?
@soepvorkje
@soepvorkje 9 лет назад
I was thinking excactly the same thing. you need more upvotes sir
@jameswillmus600
@jameswillmus600 9 лет назад
TR1PpyNick The props would hit each other. In a physical sense though, you are correct. However, that turbulence only comes into play during a rapid descent.
@nicklindenmuth4523
@nicklindenmuth4523 9 лет назад
Is it possible to clock the props to miss each other?
@ph0t0experience
@ph0t0experience 9 лет назад
Nick Lindenmuth Nope. they spin at diffrent speed when you are yawing and such.
@deltajegga
@deltajegga 9 лет назад
that makes sense...well, i guess this specific quad you couldn't, but all you would have to do to make it work is just spread the motors apart until the props clear each other.

Excellent Video! I would love it if you do an entire video just on KK2 flight tuning! (Put a Go Pro on your head so we can see the menu's) In particular I would like to see you go through the process of tuning one of your Tricopters. I find Quads much easier to tune than Tricopters!

If one were to go by their own video and recommendations, the parts list for the frame and parts along would be over $100. I'd like to assume that they would be able to offer it all in a kit form closer to the price range of their other kits. Bat Bone kit - $79 V-Tail Motor Mounts - $4.75 AnyCopter booms - $4.50 Replacement Delrin - Straight - $10 Straight 13-370 Landing Gear Conversion Kit - $3.00 Total - $101.25 This is going by the very video here, not other substitutions or fabrications.

@shanks_1908
@shanks_1908 9 лет назад
Great looking quad! Are there any performance benefits to running a v-tail configuration? My only thought is that some thrust efficiency would be lost as the tail angle causes the rear props to constantly fight against each other in the horizontal axis.

It looks bad ass! But also, think of how much extra torque, lift and stability an extra motor can offer over a tricopter, yet still retain the yawwing capabilities of a Tricopter. If Dave is using it over his Tri, it's gotta be good.

By the way that is funny: I just googled Delrin (the plate material) and found out it is produced about 50 km from my home here in the Netherlands. So when the Bat bone comes in, it has made almost a round trip!

Gotta love the KK2. simple to set up, easy to adjust in the field and flys great. why can't other FC boards have the on screen and buttons idea for field adjustment. Non of this hook to a PC, Bluetooth or stupid stick adjustments.

Idea for challenge using multi rotors: It starts with multi rotors at night. One person hides a single magnetic object in a field. Each team gets one fpv multi rotor heli, and has to put some sort of light on it, flashlight, LEDs, etc. and a string with a magnet dangling below the helicopter... OBJECTIVE: find the missing magnetic object using fpv and lights. Then capture it with the magnet on a string, and bring it back. The one who finds it and brings it back wins!

depends. ranges between 15 seconds for thin stuff to 2 or 3 minutes for thicker stuff
@Drachenhebron

I'm hoping this can be confirmed, but my guess is other than looks, the angle of the tail rotors can help in turning rate, much like the tricopters pivot rotor

Very nice as always ! I'm going to use the same motors, esc's and board for my bat bone tri. David, you mention you would'n use these motors for flying with the gopro, is that because of the power to weight ratio? Is that also the case when I don't plan to do any acrobatics with it?
@drcuffe
@drcuffe 10 лет назад
I think inverted would be the same or less efficient, you are pushing/compressing onto other pushed air but at nearly 90degress. But if you invert this, then both motors will be trying to draw/suck air from the same space, which is worse.

Thanks David for including your KK2 settings. What size battery do you prefer when flying this sized tri / quad copter? I built your tricopter recently and I'm using a 3s 2200 battery. Will this be enough if I want to add basic Fatshark FPV gear to it? Thanks!

JAY-sus...I remember back in "the day" with a KK2 board. Now you can get a ZOHD Kopilot Lite to do what would have been hundreds of dollars to set up with janky electronics to do half of this stuff. We've certainly come a HUGE leap forward in just 5 years! Hells, I remember having to hand-pick NiCad cells to get a good 4 mins of run time on anything!

supposedly it has better yaw authority over the conventional + and x configurations. Similar to the tricopter. Basically is like a quadcopter with more yaw authority or a tricopter with more lifting capabilities. Fits the middle ground between the tri and the conventional quadcopter

yes, people do it using variable pitch propellers. it's difficult though, as the plane cannot be controlled when in that orientation.

at 40 degrees tilted propellors you only get 76.6% vertical lift efficiency compared to 100% at 0 degrees tilt. I wouldn't rely on this design as it wasted baterry and motor power, regardless of the maneuvering advantages
@ceradinimp
@ceradinimp 11 лет назад
Looks really stable, like a quad, but good yaw authority, close to a tri. However, wouldn't a tricopter set up be more efficient? Less weight and same thrust if you find a good motor/prop combo (DT 750 with 11" or 10" props). Please do a review on Chad's hex with gimble. Looking at that set up for my next project with APM 2.5.
@beyondfossil
@beyondfossil 11 лет назад
The v-tail quadcopter will have stronger yaw/rudder performance because the yaw action comes from propeller thrust rather than differential/opposing motor torque of a regular quadcopters and like most other multicopters actually. Its well known that tricopters give the smoothest and best yaw action but tricopter's have increased complexity & costs because of the use of a servo controlled tail. The V-tail should get close to the tricopter's yaw/rudder performance without requiring a servo.
