FliteTest Spear w/iNav Maiden, turning a man into a boy.

This is the maiden flight experience of my FliteTest Spear. I built the plane in January, 2020 and have been afraid to send it. I did bring it out to the flying field several times, but always had an excuse not to fly it. Finally on May 23, I sent the plane skyward.
Weather: Temp: 28C (82F) Winds 7m/s (15m/h) out of the S to SE. Gusty. There were a few tiny pockets of smooth air for a few seconds here and there, but it was mostly quite a breezy day.
I am a noob to iNav and RC Aircraft in general. My first real flight with a FT Tiny Trainer was about one year ago exactly. I built and crashed several planes before then, but it wasn't until I started flying with Andy and Kevin last year that I was actually able to send a plane and land it!
This plane will need tuning, in fact, I'm such an iNav newbie that I haven't even run Autotrim or Autotune on any of my now three iNav builds. My plan is to do a video series on following the iNav Fixed Wing Group's Tuning Guide. I hope soon...
This is my first plane with a pan tilt for the FPV camera. I use the sliders on the Taranis to move them. That really adds an element to flying. This is my test setup before a head tracker. This is also my first plane where the plan is to carry HD cameras. I'm so sick of DVR footage!
There were two issues discovered after the flight; the motor mount bolts were loose I discovered after I got the plane back in the hanger. The other... I'll let you watch to the end to see. Both of these issues have been fixed and the plane is ready for its next mission.
Here are the specs for this FT Spear:
3 Pieces of Dollar Tree Foam Board (Adams Ready Board)
AUW 1374g (3lbs) w/ Zippy Compact 3300 4S 40C
1045mm (41.1in) wingspan
SunnySky X2216 VII (The Black Ones!) 1250 KV Motor
APC 8x6E Propeller
Hobbywing Skywalker 50A ESC
Matek F411WSE w/ iNav 2.2.1 (Flashed and configured in January, 2020)
ReadyMade RC Mini220 GPS
Emax ES08MDII Servos for control surfaces
Turnigy TGY-180D Pan Servo
TowerPro clone MD90 Tilt Servo
FrSky R9 Mini RX
RunCam Eagle 2 Pro FPV Camera
Eachine VTX
Foxeer V2 RHCP Antenna
Adafruit NeoPixel Lighting (The 16 pixel ring is the perfect size for the motor ring!)
Custom 3D printed parts, and parts from Thingiverse
The entire plane is covered with packing tape, either clear, or colored on the underside.

Been wanting to get back into flying and, been interested in this air frame. Seems like it needs to be purchased now. Great practical review. Thanks.

Thank you! The Spear plans can still be downloaded at FliteTest: s3.amazonaws.com/plans.flitetest.com/stonekap/FT_Spear_v1.0_Full-Size.pdf All the plan downloads are at the bottom of this page: www.flitetest.com/articles/ft-spear-build I did modify my build a little from the plans. I'd say I have learned a lot from this build. I'm working on a follow up on this airframe.

What kind of control arms did you use on the servo to elevon connection? I am building mine and wanted to go a step beyond the simple bend steel rods. I have seen people use the carbon fiber rods and nicer connectors. Can you share what you used? Thank you.

I just use .062" (1.57mm) music wire from the hobby shop. I too would like to use something better. However for my style of flying this wire works fine. I do use a Z bend and something like this at the control horn end: www.banggood.com/1_3mm-1_8mm-2_1mm-2_5mm-3_1mm-Adjustable-Pushrod-Connectors-Linkage-Stoppers-For-RC-Airplane-p-1118874.html I use 3D printed control horns.

@@DankRCX Thanks man I am trying to order some of my electronics. Going with the radial power pack C they recommend at flite test and gonna grab some of their control rods but looking at some of the kwik loc connectors and some carbon fiber rods for the servo elevon connections. They sell some of those pushrod connectors at flite test I am grabbing those too. Can't wait to fly this thing. I think I am going to just get the basic fight stuff first and then see how it flies before getting all the FPV stuff installed.

@@petermatos4613 The biggest problem I have is with the launch, but once it the air, it is one of my favorite planes to fly, it was also fun to build. Good luck with your build!!

Hey man. Do you perhaps have the full weight of the model with battery on board? I've built my spear but it just does not get off the ground. I think it's too heavy. I built it from a different foamboard as finding the flite test board in South Africa is not an option. I'm using a 2212 1000kv and also tried 2212 1400kv 9x4.7 prop 30a esc 4s 1300mah 120c Just seems to refuse to get off the ground. I managed to get it in the air but it was barely hanging on. Floating to the ground with full throttle.

The current AUW with Zippy Compact 3300 4S is 1449 grams (3.1lbs). The beast is hard to launch. This video is its maiden flight, and I had a bit of wind to throw it into. I have found in later flights that with little or no wind it is hard to get in the air even with my pretty aggressive iNav Autolaunch settings. I have crashed it on launch and had to do some repairs, and also changed the rear camera, that is why the weight is heavier now than on maiden day. It was 1374g that day. Besides the weight and the rear camera, all the specs remain the same as in the description above. I use Adams Ready Board (same as FliteTest) and I cover it in packing tape. Yesterday I flew the Spear again, no wind, I used my bungee launcher to get it in the air. Once in the air, my setup has plenty of power and range. Working on a vid of that flight too.

Mine with zero fpv equipment or flight controller flew very well. It was easy to launch. It was from a FliteTest kit. 2200 3s LiPo.
