The bubbles by the wood are from the wood and not the epoxy. Next time you should try sealing the endgrain with 5min epoxy and you will get a much better finish. Overall very nice though!!

Kick Ass Videos 2 points to this. 1, he literally stuck the legs back together with 2 part epoxy 2, if you’re worried about strength you can use the same brand of epoxy and paint the endgrain, let it cure, lightly sand and then fill the mould.

Ps in order to make epoxy clear, just paint on another thin layer of epoxy after you use the acetone and it will be perfectly clear

This could work, unless the cloudiness is due to internal voids in the epoxy resin due to internal degassing as the epoxy expands and contracts during the curing process. Voids from trapped gasses would also explain the fractures in two of the legs. In lieu of a vacuum chamber, thin layers of epoxy build up to the final thickness would minimize this effect and more effectively dissipate heat due to the more optimal surface area to volume ratio and would allow more of the trapped gasses to escape during the early stages of curing in each layer.

I'm gonna try this, but making a cane for my mother. Instead, I'll just get a dowel and break it and then stuff the broken ends into a piece of PVC pipe and fill the pipe with resin through a hole in the side. Much simpler, but probably won't be as nice. But I don't have as many tools, or as much money for expoxy... so I'm gonna have to get creative. Great video, nice inspiration, and you set a great example by not giving up and keeping a good attitude through failures! I'll definitely check out some of your other videos after this one!

@@Voiidpriince I ended up doing a small test, and it actually released pretty easy with no release! I didn't even think of that, and I cut the pipe up both sides and split it open and none of it stuck or anything. I'll probably use release when I do the big version though just to be safe. I've just been busy with my sick dog and haven't gotten around to it. I don't mind tho, he comes first! I just gotta try not to forget about this project!

I hope this doesn't come across as a criticism, but there's a certain roughness to your projects as well as your videos that I really appreciate. A lot of the projects you see on youtube come out pristine and you never see any errors along the process of creating them. this video felt like something I would do when approaching something, with the same kinds of mistakes having to be accounted for along the way, and it was refreshing to see that something so beautiful still came out of things not being exactly perfect as you wanted.

The way you cut the tips off of the legs imparted different anhles on them, but maybe not enough to be noticed. Is it level ebough to not be a bother?

Cracks and cloudiness can be minimized with shallower, layered pours of epoxy resin. The shallow pours with a partial cure in between each allows any trapped gas to escape, as well as allows some of the heat caused in the curing process to escape. While each layer is still soft and relatively thin, and also allows each consecutive layer to fill in any weak areas formed due to expansion and contraction of the resin. Also, to get crystal clear epoxy, degassing under vacuum is best practice. If you intend to incorporate epoxy resin into future projects a ~$100 vacuum pump and a small vacuum chamber (big enough for a half filled container of epoxy) is worth the investment. You won't realize how much gas and air is in your epoxy until you see it boil out under vacuum. All of this gas will end up trapped in tiny, microscopic bubbles inside the curing epoxy that can both cause cracks as well as diffuse light (reducing clarity and strength). Without the vacuum, you can still pour very clear epoxy, but each layer must be poured SUPER thin, almost like a thin film. Wait 30 mins (or whatever is recommended for the epoxy resin by the manufacturer), quickly blast the surface with a torch to pop the bubbles, and then add your next layer at the recommended interval, rinse and repeat. The key to strong, crystal clear epoxy resin is time and patience. The vacuum chamber will reduce time and increase layer thickness, but laying the epoxy resin is almost always going to improve pour quality and minimize risk of fissures, cracks, bubbles, and diffusion.
@workshop_edits
@workshop_edits 4 года назад
Thanks for your tips. This is thickset epoxy which allows for pours up to 2 inches. I just let it cure in too hot of an environment, which lead to bubbles and cracks. Cheers.

Awesome look, my only concern is the strength of the legs with the different materials. There's really no strong physical connection between the resin and the wood, plus the wood might expand and contract against the resin making it get weak over time. My fear is that the legs could break fairly easily with a jolt or drop. Besides that worry it looks amazing and would be a cool technique for other pieces that don't have to take the weight of someone sitting on it.

next time, you should make only 1 leg with wood, the other ones complete with epoxy, that would looks like the chair stands only on 1 leg. :) or the legs complete with epoxy and put an led inside the leg. i helped a friend of mine to do this, because i have a company and work for over 25 years with epoxy. there are so many possible things you can do with it. it's only important, to use the right epoxy, because not every epoxy is the same, but i'm pretty sure you know this. :)

If you ever need to break it again make longer pieces or extend them sliding them into a long pipe, the premise is: Think about a broom, slide it between two pieces of a tree trunk that started to grow apart in a V, and lever it so you can break it slowly so the fibers have time to "demesh" more individually, it's not about strength but slowly breaking it apart.
