On this episode I am Building a TV Stand Out of Wood and Epoxy. I had the idea for this console when LG approached me to sponsor a video. When I saw the TV they wanted to promote, I was inspired to come up with something that had a floating illusion. I'm really happy with the way that it looks, and although it might be a bit gimmicky, there is still a lot of valuable woodworking information here. Building cases out of hardwood, frame and panel doors, sliding doors, building forms, making stopped dados, and more.
A Big thank you to LG for partnering with me and making this video possible. You can learn more about the OLED 4K LG E9 by visiting: lgoled.co/Chri...

For anyone wishing to replicate this, particularly the clear epoxy joint Chris talks about @ 12:15 - instead of an "epoxy dowel" use a clear polycarbonate dowel - you could use clear acrylic as well but polycarbonate would be stronger, as the acrylic would tend to bend rather than snap or shear. Perspex wouldn't be recommended as it's a little brittle, with a higher shear factor. (10 years plastics industry). PS, Chris @14:40 "tongue thing" is called a tenon. A "tongue" only refers to a small stub of wood roughly 10mm wide, as per "tongue and groove". Once you get bigger than roughly 10mm it's called a "stub tenon" and past 25mm it's a full on tenon. PPS @ 16.59 - using a trim router, you can make a replacement base that has one side much larger (longer) than the other to give yourself a bigger registration area on the workpiece, and you can also put finger pressure on it to stop that rocking situation that all small trim routers suffer from. Major PITA when doing roundovers or things where you absolutely NEED a crisp 90deg edge.

Absolutely beautiful Chris as always, I learn from you every time I watch. I’m getting ready to build a desk for my wife out of red ambrosia maple, my friend owns a saw mill so any wood I could want is very abundant, she wants very clean and feminine and your joinery and finishes always help inspire. I was in a store called Wood Craft last Monday and was in heaven with the machines and different tools like you use, hopefully one day I can acquire a few seeing as how expensive they are but understanding why. Keep inspiring and story telling with your projects, for it really does help us weekend woodworkers step up our games. Thank you Chris!!!

To strengthen epoxy, additives are used. Some are designed to thicken, some to ease sanding in fairing (like on a boat side), others are fibers to strengthen. You could have dropped in a stainless or a black bolt at the joint as a highlight and not worry about it. Wonderful design as is ✌

That's really cool! I also liked your idea of a stand you mentioned in your last headphone stand video! Little tip from german carpenter teaching, adjust your saw blade as high as possible, so it'll last longer, won't burn that fast and the cut will be more efficient due to the different angle the blade runs into the wood!:) And I'd really like to see a furniture project on your channel, where you integrate tambour doors, with an even surface and almost no loss in wood structure.:)

Incredible piece. I'm speechless. But I'd have liked the handled on the sides of the doors because, you know, a handle on the top tells the users to grab it and pull. But a handle on the side would tell the users to push it to the side, which suits a sliding door. But I've got no idea how that would look.
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 4 года назад
You make a good point. I think seeing it in person it would be pretty hard to imagine them pulling horn though. Also... wait a minute. A lot of doors pull open from a side handle. In fact about 99% of the doors i interact with work that way now that I’m thinking about it.

Your editing skills make your videos turn out as beautifully as the furniture you make - it's seriously a joy watching things like this. I feel like that stretcher, or is it trellis? Whatever, the long thin horizontal piece of wood just above floor height that connects the legs on each side, might look good being "broken" in the middle and re-connected with a length of epoxy. Maybe if it doesn't hold up to the strength test and you have to rebuild it you could do that (lol)
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 4 года назад
That would be a cool idea...If/when I break this piece though. I'm definitely not building the base back the same way. I'll do something totally different so that I can make another video about it. Maybe down the road I'll use this technique for something again though :)
