Gday, this video I build a new floating tailstock die holder, the original one I built back in 2019 dont except the larger dies, unfortunately im running low in material and when I get more stock ill be making more slide sections to take the 2 other size dies I have, I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching, Cheers

real great job. As a mechanical engineer I'm simply in love with blue chips falling off the lathe 🙂Just one little recommendation: instead of making different holders for the several thread cutter inserts I will just make a large one and have adaptor rings covering the different diameter jumps of inserts. Saves a lot of time and of course material. Since you say at the end of the video, that you're short on material, this will be the more economical solution. But once again, real great job !!!!!

Anybody that complains about someone else wasting material because they start with too big of a piece probably has never had their own shop. You work with what you have because going out to get the couple 12” lengths you need in the right diameter costs more than the material you’re “wasting”.

Great job Matty. I dont like wasting material either. When I made mine I made the slider double ended and with a couple of split adaptors it covers 4 sizes of die. As said elsewhere you might want to put the setscrews in so they line up with the indents in the dies so you can adjust them a little bit. I was a bit lazy and did not bother with the knurl. It is your material, you waste it whichever way you like. I think most people that work with metal (or wood, plastic, etc) has had "I can either make this out of the material I already have, which is the wrong size, or I can order some material, which costs more than the material I already have, and takes a week to get here - and there's a minimum order of $$$, which is several times what I need for this job". First time here, thoroughly enjoyed it. I was an mechanical engineering apprenctie in 1971until 1976, so our ages are roughly in the same era. I stayed in mechanical engineering until I retired, and I've never seen that type of die holder before. Even back in the old days we would turn external threads on the lathes using single point tooling. Dies were used to dress damaged threads and taps were used for internal threads. As for wasting material, we used to call it ' Making Precision Swarf'. As I liked the content, you've got a whinging Pom as a subscriber 👍

Great bit of engineering, super finish. Your original die holder, you could mill a slot along the full length of the internal rod section, say approx 4mm wide. Unscrew the anti-twist bar and replace it with a grub screw with a matching key section machined on it to fit the slot. You'll probably need another key to still engage when it's fully extended. Half-hour project for you Matty. Cheers Tony

G'day Matty. Nice build mate! You talk about getting more material to make die holders for the other two sizes, but have you considered saving a lot of material and making the die holders fit into each other? So you make a holder for the middle sized die, that fits into the one you have just made, and then make one for the smallest dies to fit into the middle sized one all held in the next largest by the set screws. ( I'd suggest using the three set screw method that will pick up the '"detent's" that are in the die periphery for a solid hold on them) my one that I made in a college course when I was teaching, is like that but only with the first and mid sized dies as we never had the big inch and a half? sized dies at the schools. This way you can have three die holders using much less material mate. Cheers from the UK Sam

Another nice addition to the tool kit Matty. I made one with a very similar design for 1" dies and it works a treat. However, when I made another one for 2" dies, I decided to use a long 1/4" keyway as I wasn't sure that a peg would be strong enough - you have just proved that it is :) Cheers, Alan.
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop Год назад
Gday Alan, I was going to use a 8mm stud but went bigger just I case, the weak link will be the tang on the taper, thanks for watching mate, cheers
@alanshomeworkshop
@alanshomeworkshop Год назад
@@MattysWorkshop I think your concern for the tang is well placed. Properly fitted morse tapers are very good at transferring torque and the tang should not be involved in this. BUT this is dependent on the torque being associated with positive axial pressure. This pressure is inherent in a drilling operation but not in a sliding die holder. When stress testing mine with a 1" 8tpi Whitworth die (not under power) I saw the male taper pulled loose in the (4MT) socket. This occurred because some frictional drag between the sliding parts of my holder allowed the thread lead to exert negative axial pressure on the taper - effectively a draw bolt in reverse. This was perhaps an extreme test as I don't envisage using dies much over 1/2" in this holder. However, it is still a reason to consider keeping some forward pressure on the die via the tailstock quill when cutting coarse threads.

The price (and availability) of material is crazy in the UK at the moment. I get a lot of my stuff from the scrappy, but that can be a bit of a lottery. I did get an 8 foot length of 2" round steel (axle from an antique Cambridge roller) it machines beautifully and is heat hardenable, but not suitable for welding. I like using old hydraulic cylinder rods if I can get them, generally classed as EN8 over here, I could happily survive on what Kurtis throws in his scrap bin !

So went back next day and got a load of other offcuts, but the owner took a dislike to me and I got stung for £140 for 180kg of what is scrap. But some of it is nice, I also found an old 80mm face mill to take 6 carbide inserts, most of the inserts have some life left in them, just need to modify to fit the new mill when it arrives, whatever it is.

Hi Matty, if you only used the die holder in your lathe there is no need to put a tang on the Morse taper. I didn't and the tail stock still ejects it OK. Where I did have a problem was when using a Morse tapered drill sleeve, with a drawer bar thread in the end, in the tail stock. I made one too some time ago, but not as beautiful as yours :) They are really handy tools and they work great. As for the coolant, the mix I have in my mill looks at least 10 times worse than yours. But it still works just fine.

Hi Mat. I detect a little stress this week. By the way what's the update on Trevor?? it may be a good time to get him around for a chat on progress and what he is up to. I think the coolant has a for rounds left in it I have seen it like golden syrup. Nice job on the Die holder.

Looks great Matty. What grade steel do you typically use? Is that just 1018 or something different? I’m always amazed at the finishes you get on every pass. Maybe it’s your tooling or speeds and feeds but I can never seem to get finishes like that without a file.
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop Год назад
Gday, Im not sure what the material is that I used here, it was a piece of shaft I was given some time ago, the finish is all in the speeds and feeds and good inserts, Thanks for watching, Cheers

Another great job Matty, nice machining as always. Tell them to get stuffed, ref using oversize stock, you used what was best available, fine by me, material is crazy expensive, more so with shortage of alloying elements such as Chrome, Molybdenum, Nickel etc, ref sanctions on Russia ( biggest supplier of these), if you buy steel, this surcharge varies. I made a similar item many moon's ago double ended, i use a light spring to aid engagement. Thanks for sharing

As i once said in your video, i think that that knurling tool likely benefits from wear, as the knurling rings are allowed the float and travel side to side, as to self correct and self align with the cut... Its kinda like the floating reamer holder, something that seems to make no sense and cant provide accurate work, but its exactly the free float that allows the tool itself that it holds - to self locate and do the job to best of its quality and finish, where a rigid setup could enforce an error or deviation from what the tool actually is theoretically supposed to do in perfect setup... Kind of a twist on the ``if you cant make it perfect, make it adjustable``, but in this case, its self adjusting due to its relative free play... All the best!

Nice one Matty. What is the knurl for? does it need to be gripped tight by hand to use it? I can see how one set screw can open the split die, but none to close it up. Make sure you give it a good whack into the tailstock when cutting large threads or you could twist the tang off. Maybe your lathe can still eject without a tang anyhow.
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop Год назад
Gday, The knurl is there for grip to slide it forward on to the job, the 2 set screws line up with the 2 indents in the dies that are 180º from each other, Thanks for watching, Cheers

I thought I had commented on this already, bit it was on the Tom Make Here die holder video which ironically, was released on the same day. Anyway, this is a nice design and built well. I like the rotation lock/sliding mechanism so you can thread under power. I have only cut small M6 threads under power. Its always a bit nerve-racking for me, but perhaps I should make one like this (and Tom's) design and get into power feed threading a bit more. Thanks for the video.
