Hey, Ms. Debbie! Mama is a Samantha Steenwijk song. She is the older blonde lady in red on the center couch, next to the host. She is what they call a folk singer in the Netherlands. Her main influences are those like Celine Dion, Irene Cara, Laura Fabian, and others of that genre, so she is very well set in the female Adult Contemporary genre of music. The song is totally in Dutch, but it is about a woman asking her mother what it is like to be a woman and how to be a better woman than she already is. Floor is singing that song to her, but as you can see, she adds a lot more emotion to her voice than Samantha ever had, which is why she's shocked by it. So from Adult Contemporary, to singer/songwriter, to opera, to Latin Power Ballad, to a phone book, you can now see that there isn't anything Floor can't sing.

This was one of the best seasons this show ever had and Floor really stole the show. When she came on almost nobody knew who she was or how good she is. By the end of the show some of her performances were charting and being played on the radio. Her solo career was launched from this.

The song was a hit in The Netherlands for Samantha Steenwijk the blonde woman sitting on the middle couch facing Floor. She was a contestant on the Dutch version of the voice finishing second that season and yes she did say Holy Shit.

Floor's voice is like a beautiful, magic bird that, at first, flies like a normal bird, just above the trees, but then simply takes to the stratusphere, seeming without limits. And she manages to convey all of the emotion of the songs she sings as if she wrote the lyrics herself. I think that's her greatest talent, besides her incredible voice 🙂 Cheers 🙂

This was by far the best season of Beste Zangers. Interesting fact: IIRC either the episode before this one or maybe even earlier Samantha sang her version (with Dutch lyrics) of the Nightwish song Our Decades In The Sun which is basically also a song about mothers (and fathers) .... so after this song Floor says how cool is it that we both sang songs about mothers.

And because of that TV-show, The Nightwish Army had to share Floor with the Netherlands!!! No not true 😊. The show actually kick-started her solo career and Floor has become even more versatile. Sadly enough, the German version of the show from last year, is more difficult to find because it needs another app than YT. But that show were phenomenal too, and the other contenders were completely blown away - and so were the German TV-watchers that didn't know her before (but she was quite well-known in Germany already)

The part beginning @2:02 and running through about @2:20 is simply one of the greatest phrases of vocal performance I have ever heard. This is where she goes through that part where her voice takes on a tone of frustration (and I think the pronunciation of some of the Dutch words is just perfect for it), then does that majestic glissando up to that belted "Mama"...Jesus Christ...I love this song. To me, it has a really cool old school vibe, something you might have seen a nightclub singer do in the 50's, or a big pop star do as a guest on a television variety series in the 70's. I like to think of an important and well-connected gangster in Las Vegas in the early 60's sending a special request for this to be sung in one of his lounges, and he'd sit in the back and just weep, because he loved and missed his mother...

my mother has been going through a very tough time for some time now, after several partial amputations, she was finally amputated above her knee, and then Floor sings this in that way, I already broke in 2019 when she sang it, but now I'm breaking in completely cry 😭😭 out when she sings it . thanks for the video Debbie ❤

Floor sounded awesome as always, but I think she may have belted the vocals more than necessary on this one. Being an emotional song, I think a little more restraint would have suited the song better IMO. A minor complaint really because, like I said, she sounded awesome. Cheers!
