The founding member of the original and most popular line-up of The Supremes, Florence Ballard talks about her firing from the group, her weight and the pressure from Berry Gordy to lose weight.
This is only a few minutes of 8 hours of interviews of Florence Ballard by author Peter Benjaminson who has written a new book on Flo released in 2008 entitled "The Lost Supreme: The Life of Dreamgirl Florence Ballard" which is heavily based on the interviews he recorded with her in 1975 only a few months before her untimely passing.

She was treated like crap by Motown her manager and Ross! She had her demons but was treated like yesterday's papers after they let her go. She deserved dignity. The Supremes were one of the most successful groups of all-time. She should have been set for life financially but was robbed and taken advantaged of. Makes me sick at what happened to her.

She was not "fat" by most people's metric... BUT what the problem really was, is that she was originally a size 10 in 1965/66, and in late 66/early 67, she gained some weight, and went up to a size 12. So now you've got 100,000$ worth of stage costumes that don't fit her anymore. You notice the final appearance on Suillivan, they wear the emprie waist chiffon dresses, and that is because those are more forigivng when you gain weight. Gordy telling her she was "fat", was just his abrasive, jackass way of expressing that.

Flo was not only beautiful with a fantastic voice, but she was ahead of her time;: an independent, strong, feminist who stood up to the vultures in the music business. Why did Diana have to steal someone else"s hard work and success? Why didn't Diane have the courage to start her own group and earn recognition rather than stealing it? It just seems she had a self-entitled attitude without any consideration for others. R.I.P. Flo. You are correct. Many, many accounts exist of the good things that Flo did for Diana, before, during and after her tenure with The Supremes. When Diana was sick from exhaustion in about '66, it was Flo who visited Diana in the hospital and cried with her. When Flo wanted to expose Diana and Berry's affair to media around '67 or '68, to her own surprise she changed her mind, saying "I STILL don't want to hurt them." Flo had common decency. She had demons, but she understood friendship.

It's a shame that Flo didn't perform during the modern era. A lot of you are wrong. Florence really didn't care about Barry devoting all his attention to Diana. She was upset because she got ALL the leads on the songs. Even the songs they covered. If Barry would have just gave Florence and Mary just a lead on a few of the covered songs they did I'm positive Florence would have been a lot more happier. Barry never tried to sit down and at least talk to Florence about what they could do AFTER Diana left the group.

I agree I don’t think in essence Flo was “jealous” of Barry and Diana’s relationship. Because of their romantic relationship that’s most likely what dampened opportunities for the other ladies. I mean Diana had her first child with Barry so it’s pretty evident she got more stardom because of her relationship with him. R.I.P to Mary and Flo ❤️ the original supreme
@michellekirkendall818
@michellekirkendall818 3 года назад
@@Llllll98 First of all, let's get the name straight: Motown Records founder is named BERRY GORDY, JR.(not Barry) Secondly, for those BORN in Motown's early years would be aware by now that all THREE talented ladies sang LEAD on early recordings as well as singing in live performances on their many tours. Thirdly, since HDH had come up with a hit formula, you want to keep the momentum, right? Gordy decided Ross voice was more marketable, therefore having her do more leads. The Berry-Diana relationship was an exclusive one; at the time, it was thought they would marry (1965-1970). If a white female artist slept her way to the top, she's in a relationship! We denigrate and tear down our own because of our self-hatred. Many groups have seen lead singers shuffled around; many stay, some look for other record deals. Florence Ballard, the beautiful, great singer, chose belligerence and anger rather than protect her interests and her career!

Yes Florence was the lead first. Some of the tracks are on youtube. They did not have any major hits so Berry switched to Diana. If DR did not sell the records he would have switched again. But DR's voice fit the pop sound he wanted and the records sold millions. I am sorry Flo died from a broken heart but I love ALL the Supremes! I truly believe BG hit on Florence. She was stacked and very pretty. Diana was very flat and skinny in the early yrs. Florence did not give that little short dictator any play so he went to Diana. Also, Berry Gordy was sleeping with other artists than Diana Ross. She was one of many. It is all in Mary's book. He does not know the meaning of monogamy.

They all shared leads in the beginning. Florence was the LEADER of the group but there was no confirmed lead singer - After All, Flo, Mary, Barbara and Diana all have a lead. When they came to Motown, Diana became the lead vocalist but Mary and Flo still shared leads on their first album. Whilst at Motown the original lineup only released 1 single - Buttered Popcorn - with Flo on lead (or anyone else but Diana). Buttered Popcorn was released twice but pulled early because of the lyrical content and the innuendo in it contradicting with the pop/top 40 vision Berry had for the group. Though the song was a regional hit it didn't chart, probably due it being pulled from release. The group released numerous singles between 61 and 63 that made no to little impact on the Hot 100, all with Diana on lead. Diana's voice alone didn't make the group have hits, it was the combination of The Supremes AND Holland-Dozier-Holland. They were like Aaliyah and Timbaland, Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson.

Jonny Gardner No her voice alone didn't make the group but her voice made the group's biggest hit without Flo or Mary or Cindy and no other Supremes except Diana and Andantes proving her voice played a major role. Love Child was the Supremes Biggest seller in their careers without Flo or Mary. Endless love with Lionel Richie is the biggest duet of all time. Bigger than Any of The Supremes Biggest hits so yes Diana Ross voice with the right song still could hit No.1. Do you know went to No.1 with no background singers prominent to stand out!

@RobGa66: An announcer mentions a situation that occurred while The Supremes were on tour. Miss Ballard is known for singing Barbara Streisand's "People." One night she was hoarse, and asked Diana Ross to sing it. From that night forward, Florence Ballard never sang the song again with The Supremes. I do understand her being upset. Could she ask Mr. Gordy if she could do another song, or ask what her role might be later. The group must have been booked AT LEAST two years ahead, get an idea of what to expect. Instead, she went overboard with her jealousy of Ross, missing rehearsals, being too drunk to appear on stage, etc. She should have considered this as creative differences. Continue your work with the group; start looking into other record deals. Instead, she fought with Ross and Gordy. Stop presenting her as a victim. Also, remember that Mary Wilson stayed put. The Supremes were the most popular girl group of the era. Miss Ballard threw it away.

That's a ridiculous statement. People, being underdogs at times, identify with the underdog. Hence your fascination with Florence Ballard. Fact is, no one hurt Flo but Flo, herself. She was part of one of the biggest musical acts in the world, held the world in the palm of her hand and threw it away because SHE was jealous. Her bitterness and jealousy ate her up in the end. She could not reconcile her role within the Supremes as a back up singer, which is what she was. Flo was a "Debbie Downer" - a malcontent, the proverbial squeaky wheel. Aside from her never possessing the talent required for solo stardom, she also greatly lacked the drive, discipline, and single minded determination to attain the heights scaled by Diana Ross. She got equal pay for doing about 20% of the work, along with Mary's share. The greatest burden rested on the shoulders of Ross, who absolutely WAS the key to the Supremes and it's success. Furthermore, Diana Ross had that unique star quality and charisma from the very start. It was evident even when she was sixteen years old. It was Ross who had it all naturally. Finally, I must add that Diana Ross was a star because she knew how to be a star - the others not so much. The responsibility for Florence Ballard's downfall rests squarely on the shoulder of Florence Ballard, and no one else. Sorry, but these are the facts.

Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson and Diana Ross were the Supremes. If Florence needed some time from the group to refocus on her life and family, the Supremes should have helped their friend and not simply permanently replace her and then conveniently place blame for the dismissal on Berry Gordy;

I love Flo, but it's always interesting to hear someone's perspective of their own history. You literally have to come out of yourself and look at the whole situation. Gordy was controlling back then. Obsessively controlling with everyone, especially the girls (the Supremes). Ross thought of him a slave driver; She and Mary hated the way he sat in the audience taking copious notes at their performances and then coming back stage with a litany of things that needed to be fixed, using tough love from the audience during their rehearsals. That would mess with anyone's head. The one battle Flo was right on was the infamous "People" debacle. I don't know if it was Gordy, or Gil Askey (who produced those Copa shows), or Ross feeling insecure or wanting to get back at Flo after one of their fights, but Flo should've retained that solo. Gordy and Askey knew Ross was never one to back down from a challenge. She would've upped her own game in response. It would've made them all that much better as performers. Ross and Mary fought Berry at different times but ultimately relented since he was the boss, but Flo fought period. Her fights with Gordy, drinking like a alcoholic, missing shows, gaining weight, being miserable, and jealous, all pretty much wrote her future. When she was happy, everybody was happy. When she was miserable, everybody felt it. They were the biggest US group in history by that point, which just prolonged the inevitable. If Flo were scared straight (which I believe was Gordy's initial intention for having Cindy around), she would've kept her eyes on the prize and the money, not hired Tommy Chapman to manage her, not have a dirty attorney steal her money, and would've gone on to have a great career post Ross. But what's done is done. Had her heart not become damaged she would've had that second act she craved for in the mid 70's.

i see it differently, i think when people are mistreated, gaslit and lied to. frankly they self destruct. they dogged her out and she had nobody to turn to. Deceased immediate family , very young and mostly by herself. it ain't hard to see how those contributing factors made her write herself out of the toxic game. i don't mean to say that she was an angel but circumstances made her change.

Mary Wilson stated that Mr. Gordy treated Diana Ross worse than any of them because he expected the most from her. All Mr. Gordy wanted Ballard to do was her job. He grew tired of her absences, tirades and constant alterations to her costumes, due to her weight fluctiations.

"I knew I was damn stacked." Love it ... right on, Flo !!! And she's right, being 5' 7" and a size 12 is NOT fat. That's actually what they consider a "healthy" weight. Flo was right, Gordy just wanted to f--k with her head.

@aimperator It was a VERY tough situation and only the 4 of them really knew what went on. I missed Flo a lot and went through years of rejecting Cindy, but now in retrospect, I realize what a great replacement she was - the best, I'm sure. No one could replace Flo, but Cindy brought a lot to the part and allowed DR&TS to go places they may not have been able to with Flo in the group.They worked like dogs until the split, I doubt that Flo could have kept up.
@MauriceRivers415

Struggling to cope with the label's demands and her own depression, Ballard turned to alcohol for comfort, leading to arguments with Ross and Wilson. Ballard's alcoholism led to her missing performances and recording sessions. Florence had been allowed back into the group to complete some dates, while Cindy's contract release was done with the Bluebelles. Flo was in bad shape. She was quite heavy and quite erratic, and her mood swings were severe, as anyone traumatized would be. On July 20, 1967, the marquee at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas had been changed from “The Supremes”, to “Diana Ross and The Supremes” by Berry Gordy's insistence, and Flo went off on BG. No employee is allowed to show up to work intoxicated: ANYBODY would be fired for that. The truth of the matter is that Motown had given Flo a second and third chance, but both Diana *AND* Mary agreed with Gordy that she had to go. They were not happy about doing this, because the group was so hot, that a change of this magnitude could have a disastrous impact. Mary has said many times that Flo wanted out: she was miserable. She had, however, deluded herself into thinking she was irreplaceable, and that helped do her in. Flo was the victim, but she was just as responsible for her fate as anyone else. Had she adopted Mary's attitude of going with the program, she would have stayed in the group until June 12, 1977 at Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in London, England.

There's almost always only one girl stand out and that one girl went on doing things while the others stays in yesterday. Why a group anyway~ Just be solo and hire backup singers,much less hurting that way.

Actually, Flo was making somewhat of a comeback before her death so I don't think she was depressed anymore and I believe she wasn't drinking as much as she use to (the autopsy showed little alcohol in her body). Really the reason for the heart attack was probably because she had put on weight and I doubt she was as active as she once was
