lo l I don’t think you can compare murder to normal childhood traits. Any acted liked a normal child. (Maybe a bratty one to some) I recently saw ‘atonement’ for the first time and I don’t understand how people hate Briony either. She was 13! They’re still CHILDREN.

Yup. I quite agree. As a teen and now as an adult, I never once shipped jo and Laurie. But I also didn't fall in love with Amy-Laurie pairing. It made sense but somehow it didn't become my favorite like Jo and Bhaer did. But this adaptation has totally made me fall in love with Amy's character and her romance with Laurie

Me too, I saw Jo and Laurie dance together and although I found that so cute and silly, I didn't really like them together, but the way Amy spoke her mind to Laurie when he visited, and the way that at first she refused him for just choosing her for a second choice instead of Jo really hit hard for me and when they got together it made me really happy.

Louisa Alcott was gay. She stated she'd fallen in love with "many a pretty girl and never once a man". She didn't actually intend to marry off Jo in the books, but the publisher insisted the main character needed to have a love interest. In real life she DID go to Europe and based Laurie on a Polish boy she developed a close relationship with, in the novel she chose to give both the trip and the boy to her sister instead. It was actually the publication of Little Women that funded Abigail May Alcott's eventual real-life trip to Europe to study painting, and May was in real life a serious artist and not a husband hunter; she did not marry until her late 30s to a Swiss man 16 years younger than herself. She died shortly after her daughter was born and Louisa raised May's child until she herself died. It is unlikely that Alcott saw her sister as a rival or thought of her as shallow or a gold digger; it would seem rather that she used her fiction to give her sister the secure life she wished for her.

Diasmc Coelho I know ahaha. I was in a book club and read all 4 books and always felt a kind of kinship to Amy because she wanted to be pretty and liked art and was a little selfish (which I related to as a 10 year old). The rest of my book club thought she was the most unlikeable character though because of her attitude and I was always too scared to voice my opinion to them lol (especially after Amy and Laurie got married and everyone was fuming it wasn’t Jo)! Glad Florence Pugh’s portrayal is opening more people up to the character.

When i saw it i just thought they were so similar to each other, i don't know how people saw more than a friendship, it's funny. I didn't even see that chemistry in this movie (i didn't watch the other versions so..), they were just confused, especially Laurie. Yes, he always loved her, but not in a romantic way. How could people think they would be together? They're literally like brothers wtf?

Laurie had only two tickets for the concert or whatever ,how was Jo supposed to tag Amy along for the show ? Amy burns her precious manuscript in retaliation .How could she be so nasty

In my opinion, she is only “unlikable” as a child, and even then, she is a CHILD. The only thing I can think of that made her unlikable is when she burned Jo’s story when Jo and Meg went to the opera without her. But that was child’s antics. I think that people don’t like her mainly because Laurie ends up with her, when people think that he should have been with Jo. I on the other hand love all of the sisters, but in their own way. Meg for her motherly ways, Jo for her boldness, Beth for her gentleness and Amy for her ambition. The sad part too is that Amy really did get swept aside in past productions of the movie, because the sole focus was on Jo. This version of Little Women I feel did each of the sisters justice on telling their story, and giving each one their own screen time. And it especially did the Amy/Laurie romance justice as well as showing the two different kinds of love Laurie felt for Jo as a boy and Amy as a man.

Unfortunately the other film adaptations haven’t done a good job at capturing the complexity of Amy. This is the first that really got her right.

People need to understand that Alcott wrote Amy as a sister and a human being. There is no villain in Little Women, it isn't Harry Potter. And the way people hate on Amy is the same as Ginny and Mrs. Weasley hating on Fleur Delacour; it was really disgusting, the only time I didn't like them in the books... the internalized misogyny in those pages 🤮

Agreed. She makes statements about knowing she will marry rich and is preoccupied with wealth more than any other character, leaving the reader to either infer she finds money to be extremely important - which makes some sense as her family lives in adverse conditions, but come on, they still have a housekeeper; they’re not having food security issues. But valuing money as she may definitely goes against the family values. I get that she “had to be practical; no one else in the family was or would be;” but that’s part of the May family charm. They live for love, and it fills and completes them. Amy ends the book with a very good love, but it does appear she always intended to choose her love shrewdly, and in some ways got lucky to end up loving someone rich who loved her back.

I think some readers have the idea that if they like Jo they must dislike Amy. Or vice versa. I never disliked one over the other and admired them as very complex, dimensional characters. As an adult reader I’m really more disturbed by a lot of Jo’s negative behavior towards Amy. Neither is a perfect angel, but Jo is truly a bully and even abusive.

i agree. i hated it when jo said that amy had a thing for getting out of the hard moments in life but it wasn't true. Amy suddenly had so much pressure on her shoulders because Meg married out of love which is great but was poor and jo followed her dreams which did not help the family either unless she would have become someone big which was unlikely att firstt. So Aunt march choosingh amy was valid and made amy someone who was planning to support her family behind the scenes.

Even right in the beginning of the book, Jo makes fun of Amy for saying the girls at school label their dad as poor and make fun. Even though the word she suggests “libel” doesn’t make sense because it’s true; they are poor.

I notice that strong reactions against Amy March tend to stem from either people's painful personal experiences with their siblings, childhood memories of bygone puppy loves, or inability and unwillingness to perceive character growth, which is lamentable.

I always thought so too. The parallel is pretty obvious. Both were tween girls who were childish and made stupid decisions and later learned from their mistakes and grew out of it, but people still use their early mistakes as justification for hating them regardless. I honestly think the real reason people hate them so much is because they're feminine and not tomboyish "not like other girls"-types like Jo or Arya.

Sansa was my girl from the beginning I've always liked something about her even though she was very annoying sometimes. Then the end of GOT happened and I literally wanted her head off, I personally do not see why people did not like in the seasons prior to the God awful final season.

I read this somewhere that people don't appreciate strong women who are feminine. They think that strong women are only those who are tom boys, who act and dress differently from "most girls". Elle woods from legally blonde is another great example.

I personally disliked Jo, she was too self-center. I think Is unfair to point out Amy being bratty when Jo was actually bratty swell. Also I hated how Jo was bitchy at times and had this attitude of "I am better than you" towards Amy, Amy was just a kid no one ever tried to understand her. I felt that when she told Laurie how hard it was for her to accept his proposition despite loving it because she didn't want to feel like the second choice or less that Jo as she always felt. I actually think the whole letter situation was selfish bullshit and I am glad she never sent it, because she never loved or actually wanted to marry him. It has to be put into consideration how incredibly selfish Jo was with Laurie, she rejected him and 7 years later she think he is still patiently waiting for her to change her mind. Do people even realise that if Amy didn't marry Laurie, Jo would have probably marry him just because she was lonely. She didn't love him she said it to her mom. That's pretty selfish and Laurie didn't deserve that. Laurie deserved to be loved back and to be married to a woman who actually wants and to marry him. I'm so happy that he met again with Amy and felt in love with the grown version of her before he got into an unhappy marriage with Jo (a woman who DIDN'T WANT TO GET MARRIED AND DIDN'T WANT A WEALTHY POLISH LIFE). And even though they had a short time on screen together it was really shown how romantic the relationship between Amy and Laurie was. The fact that she had a crush on him and drew him when she was younger, they met up and the chemistry its strong right away with the looks and the flirting. Then Amy trying to help him grow up and become a man and stop being a pity loser. She is the wife that Laurie deserves, and I'm glad he felt in love with her. You can tell he felt completely in love with her really quick by looking and how he smiles when Jo asks her if she loves Amy. So romantic and it's honestly so meant to be. Laurie and Jo's chemistry was never actually romantic it was more of a platonic friendship, Jo never did anything romantic for Laurie or was as caring as Amy was for him.
