Kayak fishing Ozello Florida… Wow! What a place. An endless mangrove river system touching Crystal Bay tucked into the Nature coast of Florida. Incredible wildlife, birds, flora and fauna… a nature lovers dream! A fisherman’s dream!... with a chance to catch Redfish, Trout, Snook, Sheepshead and more. I went out fishing Ozello with two local Tampa Bay Kayak Club members (Dan and Dave) for a day of site fishing through the vast mangrove systems. Dan arranged the trip logistics and David provided the guiding of the area, as he had fished it many times before. We launched from the beach around 07:00 on a cold 55-degree morning, the sun and paddling slowly warming us up as we headed out for the day. Paddling past Charr island, Bear island, and Sandy hook we were deep into endless mangrove tunnels and river sloughs. The world turned quiet and slowed down… The wind disappeared with the protection of the mangroves, the gin clear water turned like glass and the blue sky provided the back drop. We fished the sandy pot holes and probed the edges of the mangroves as spooky big reds tail waked past us. Man, there are fish in that place, but you better bring your A-game to catch them.
