This is the eighth video in our series of mango tasting videos. Subscribe to our channel to see more of our mango tasting and fruit tree grafting videos.
Today, Craig shows when to pick and how to properly ripen Mallika mangos in Florida and then he and Celeste taste one of the Mallika mangos off our backyard tree. We will be tasting both mangos grown at our own farm and from other local Florida farms.
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

I pick mine green (as you recommended) and had never heard about wrapping and placing them in a warm place. I just set them down on the kitchen counter (where there is AC) until they turn slightly yellow. They are absolutely amazing with ZERO tartness. I have had many people taste them independently and almost everyone tastes coconut. It's like gourmet dessert. I will try wrapping one and placing in my garage to see if it makes a difference. This is by far my favorite mango.

Ozzie Mayoral are you on the east coast? We tried so many ways including how you mentioned and it was like 1 out of 10 that was good. Two local friends had the same experience. Two of us removed our trees.

We've brought home Mallika mangoes several times after visiting Pine Island. Of all the varieties we've tasted, Mallika was consistently in our top two. It was always a toss-up between the Carrie and the Mallika. We just recently found your RU-vid channel and really enjoy your mango informational videos. The varieties that we are presently growing are: Carrie, Mallika, Lancetilla, Fruit Punch, Coconut Cream & Sweet Tart. Might have to try a Lemon Meringue based on your review.

Thanks for watching! Sounds like you have some great varieties! You might like Lemon Zest too. Ours have been productive and the fruits are larger than Lemon Meringue. I'm glad we have both.

I second your thoughts on Mallika. It's like a Carrie that broke it's chain & went rogue. What was funny the first time I tried Mallika I thought I might not like it for the first 3 seconds - then the full flavor hit my brain's taste buds & I was totally smitten. A++

Orlando Gardener Craig really liked the Mallikas this year. The tree is nice because it has more of a dwarf growth habit.

Try planting other mango seeds from India like Badami, Raspuri, Malgova, Mundappa, Neelam, Bayganpalli, Aapus (Alphonso), Kalappadi, Thothaapuri etc.

Mallika might be my favorite "rich/potent" Mango. It's like an amped up Carrie on steroids with a bit of a wild side to it. It's a mango lovers mango. I know all the stories about how Mallika "should be" properly ripened, but are the extra steps really necessary for peak flavor? The kitchen counter or window sill always seemed to work for me with.

Steve M - are you on the central west coast of FL? I have friends over here who also ripped out their Mallikas (we removed ours last summer). It just never tasted as good as some others. Wasn’t worth the fuss for us, even when perfectly ripe. Not sure if it is a location issue or the tree just needed more age. Our tree was around 6 years old. Even the best Mallika didn’t compare to a perfect Coconut Cream.

The only ones I had ever had were ordered from Alex at Tropical Acres and Steve at Fruitscapes. Alex did say there was some variability with Mallika. I think I also read somewhere Mallika takes longer to produce good fruit and not to give up on it too soon. I doubt the ones I got from Alex had been prepped in any special way. It is a complex full flavored mango. Carrie fans would like it, others may find it too strong. I gave them an 8.5 which is top score for me. I have a mature Carrie and Valencia Pride, but will be adding an Edward, Glenn, PPK, Keitt, Lancetilla, Mallika and maybe some others to extend the season. Thank you for your reviews. With hundreds of varieties the reviews are a great aide.

Once they are well established, we don't hand water, but we do mulch around the trees and each tree has a dripper

Once established I have never watered or fertilized my mango or avocado trees. They do just fine. Citrus need more care.

L Donald I’ve heard a lot of people say Cotton Candy, but our tree hasn’t produced yet. My favorite sweet mango is Coconut Cream. I’m not sure if it was technically the sweetest one I’ve tried though.

Taffy looking so cute. Malli means jasmine in south Indian language, so Mallika loosely translated "owner of jasmine" or "jasmine like". I have to stop watching, cant collect more trees for DFW. star fruit, guava, neem, moringa all in pots , all are indoors now garage is filled now.

We have tasted some terrible mangos - particularly some terrible Malika mangos, so I prefer for Craig to taste them first since I am slightly allergic. Some times, we don’t even post the video because the mango is just bad. Celeste
