This law was to encourage people to take up the care of abandoned property wayyyyy back when we were trying to settle the west. Until MaBell it was hard to find previous owners, especially ones that may have died in their endeavor to "go west, young man" It's not a wrong law as it is an outdated one the bad people figured out how to take advantage of.

Ironically you may be "squatting" right now on land that someone else has a claim on from 200+ years ago. The laws squatters use originate from the fact that land ownership back in the day was a difficult and tricky thing, with usage being equated to ownership in some cases. Of course these squatters are taking it too far now but the law makes sense in terms of these ancient deeds that come up every once in awhile claiming some guy owns half of your city because his ancestors got a deed a century ago.
