Galvanized cans will for sure keep rats and mice out of your stored goods. They do have a very tight lid (on quality made cans), but not air tight so humidity levels in your pantry area must be kept as low as you can. Don't have the freezer space to freeze 50 pounds of anything, or space to store 50 pounds of flour, so we use a vacuum food sealer, placing 2-1/2 pounds of flour into brown paper lunch bags, fold over and tape, then into vac bags for a hard vac pack. If doing 5 pounds at a time, just leave in the factory bag. The hard vac kills any critters hiding in the flour.

For the smaller boxes (mac n cheese, potato mixes, etc) I put them in zip lock bags and give it a good puff of food grade diatomaceous earth. Squeeze as much air out as possible and it's good to go. I also puff DE onto my pantry shelves (ours are wood) We haven't had a problem with mealybugs since I started this.

I wanted to thank you for this, I actually have done everything you said to do to keep weevils out of my dry goods. I have rice stored in 5 gallon food grade buckets after I froze it for a week and then in the bucket with the rice and the very bottom I put five leaves halfway filled up I put another five leaves and then when I finish filling it up I put five more bay leaves on top and then seal up the bucket. I don't use mylar bags and oxygen absorbers. Mainly because I can't afford them LOL. And I was a little worried about my storage method not being good enough to keep bugs out of my food. But I actually threw the bags of goods in the freezer for a week one of them was in there for 3 weeks and then I used bay leaves inside with the product. So this really relieved my mind about my storage method I was worried LOL.

Yep. Just soap and water wash the galvanized interiors to get rid of oils, wipe with vinegar, let dry, and brush on a coat of shellac and just dump your product in. Foam weatherstrip around the top and/or clear packaging tape to seal the top can make that years worth of storage in a cool, dry place. Eating shellac is not desirable but it’s not toxic.

Where I live it is very humid I think if I put it in the freezer and take it out it will get a lot of condensation. I will probably vacuum seal it in smaller quantities then put it in the freezer because the paper packaging is too absorbent. This way I know the moisture can’t mold my flour. Thank you so much for this video!!! Yes they still sell those galvanized buckets with lids- I saw them on sale for $21 in Michigan a few months ago but today’s regular price (online) is $27.99 for the 10-gal bucket. According to the Food & Wine Magazine, 50 pounds of flour should fit perfectly in a 13-gallon bucket…. So a 10-gallon is perfect for storing bulk & then you’ll have extra for your day-to-day needs in your kitchen! Thank you again for this video! (I’ll have to search for a tour of your kitchen 😆 ♥️)

My home got infested with those after we brought my FIL here from a skilled nursing facility. That and roaches! It was awful! I noticed the roaches right away and got rid of them. I did not notice those mealy bugs until they were in most of my food. Had to throw everything out and clean. But even that didn't eliminate them. Tried the bay leaves, that didn't work! I just had to use bug spray and clean every week, all cabinets that had food, or every time I saw a bug. Numbers are way down now. This has been going on almost a year. I've bought plastic containers and put flour, pasta, and rice in them. Flour goes in the freezer asap!

I don't have a freezer, so I waited several months and took out the bags and found there was no evidence of infestation. I measured by cups into brown paper lunch sacks. Then I vacuum sealed the sacks inside foodsaver bags. I then placed these back in food grade buckets. I expect no growth within the oxygen free enviroment and will monitor for outside contamination. I am open to other suggestions.

The original sturdy paper bag with the flour in it could be stored in the black trash bag, so that the flour is not actually touching the trash bag. Also, it would a good idea if all packages from the supermarket are wiped down with mild disinfectant before storing in the freezer. Since the lockdowns, we’ve bought an extra freezer and store most of our perishable goods in one, and meat and frozen veggies in the other. Awesome video thanks for sharing. I used to buy flour & corn meal in very small bags. Cause I never used a lot of it. This was 30 plus years ago. One day I found bugs in my flour. I threw it out and I stopped buying it. To this day I never bought anymore. I buy Jiffy mix for corn bread now & then and use it right away. Can those bugs go through Glass or Metal Container's? Thank you. Stay well & safe.

Usually The bugs are already in the flour bags when you buy them. Flour moths too can get into the flour and lay eggs. When I buy flour I put it into a plastic bag in the freezer for 2 or 3 days , then I remove it from the freezer, take it out of the plastic bag and thaw it out then I put it back into the plastic bag and place it back into the freezer for a further 2 or 3 days to kill any eggs that have hatched .

yeah , i would not keep glass jars for anything ; if and when they break, they will just turn into a big mess with very sharp edges that can potentially cut you ; why put you and your family at such risk ???? stick with plastic containers , they wont shatter like glass should they break ; if food did not come in them then use those for storage of non-food items ; ONLY use the ones that came with food in them to store your food items i buy bulk items too ( 25 to 50 lb bags of sugar , salt , flour , oats , etc ) ; but i only use food grade containers ; anything not specifically made to store food in it will just contaminate what ever food you store in it ; they do make up to 55 gallon food grade containers ; yes they will be expensive ; BUT what price do you put on the health and safety of your family ???

My mom always used bay leaves in her floor! She didn’t have bugs, but then when we made cakes and cookies they always had a little taste of bay leaves, to this day I can’t stand them. If I used the tea bag method will the f floor still smell like the bay leaves?

Sometimes dead sometimes they Still crawl around my countertop. It makes me seriosly anxious 😢

I often buy flour in autumn for the year. I put the packaged product in a 5 gallon heavy plastic pail. I leave them for a few months in an outdoor shed, where it gets to minus 40 for a few weeks. I have a question, do you ever worry about condensation (from freezing) and what do you do about it?

@@HOMEGROWNthang can rice be stored in gallon water plastic jugs ?
@HOMEGROWNthang
@HOMEGROWNthang Год назад
@@sbubb9155 Ive seen where people store it in jugs, old mayo jars, and other interesting things. You will have to make a safe decision based on your budget, situation, ect.. You will have many naysayers to non food grade plastics, bottles and such. I have read because it isnt food grade AND because you cant propoerly sterilize the container prior to using it. Ive even read not to get your buckets from the bakery because it might have chemicals from where they used it to mop the floors. 🙄🙄Whatever ..Most people have common sense. I get my FOOD GRADE BUCKETS from the lady at the counter who washes it while Im there and it has a hint of icing smell when I get home. I just run it through an good hot water bath and its ready! I get them for free so I dont have to pay for expensive food grade buckets online. So if you dont see where it came from dont use it for food if it makes you uncomfortable. ANYWAY,...I have stored it in clean dried old water jugs, mason jars, ect...but this isnt for long term. That was only until I got it to my bucket with a lid. Preppers suggest a food grade bucket, oxygen absorbers, and mylar. I hope this helps

How doesn’t the bag get wet from the moisture of the freezer? Can you separate the flour into vacuum sealed bags then freeze them instead? I also read if you put bay leaves into the vacuum sealed flour, rice, sugar & beans that not only helps with leftover oxygen but bugs as well is that true??

Put the bag of flour into a plastic bag in the freezer. If you vacuum pack the flour that will kill any bugs that may be there anyway,
