Today I'm sharing how to get rid of pantry moths (otherwise known as Indian meal moths, grain moths or flour moths) and the best moth traps that ACTUALLY work! I'm sharing the full process of eradicating this moth infestation from finding the source, inspecting every food item (looking for signs of eggs, larvae or pupae), setting out traps, wiping down the keep items, deep cleaning the pantry and adding a natural moth repellant to keep them out in the future. Pantry moths usually make their way in to your home as eggs. Contaminated items can be flour, cereal, rice, nuts, seeds and any other type of grain as well as bird seed and pet food. Larvae can chew their way through plastic and travel long distances searching for food. You'll find larvae and pupae on the ceiling, on and inside food containers and along the edges of your shelves and storage containers. They are destructive and it takes a lot of work to get rid of them.

You have to throw away all food that may be contaminated. Wash your kitchen cabinets at least three times. I used the white vinegar mix first, and then soap that's 10 times stronger than bleach. Don't put your food back into the cabinets instead, place traps inside over night. I successfully got rid of them this way. I also disinfected the whole kitchen which includes the ceiling, doors and so on. :) The whole process took three days but it's totally worth it as the thought of larvae in food is terrifying.

I never even knew about pantry moths.....until we were infested! I was so grossed out, I threw out everything that wasn't canned. I did exactly the same things you did. The only difference is, when I come home from the grocery store, flour,sugar, rice,beans are put in the freezer for a few hours. I'm not taking any chances. I NEVER want to go through that again. You gave a very thorough procedure for eradicating them.

According to my science teacher father, the eggs are in the product. And if the product sits too long on the Shelf the eggs will start to produce especially during the summer months. And you'll never know until you start seeing something flying around the room and you don't know where it came from. Check your spice envelopes too if you haven't used them in 3 years or so. Happen to me. There are eggs from insects inside flour and the same is true of any pre-packaged mixed with flour or corn flour and can sometimes happen with rice that was stored way too long
@susanmarshall817
@susanmarshall817 8 дней назад
Maybe I didn't say this to you but my father was a science teacher and told us at the age of 9 or so that those beetles that come out of the flour bag were in there as eggs when you bought it... and any flower powdered mix if you keep it too long and this includes spice mixes. I found bugs in a spice mix I hadn't opened for years in a bag . I generally also refrigerate my flour in a plastic bag

I have never had this problem until last fall when I bought a large bag of black sunflower seed for the birds. I had the bag sitting in my mud room and I noticed the little white worms when I opened it up. Then I started noticing the worms crawling up the walls and cocooning in the corners of the ceiling. The Moths that did hatch were everwhere. Everytime I opened a door to a closet one or two would fly out. I had put the sunflower seeds out on my deck for about a week in the middle of winter thinking that they wouldn't survive the cold, but they did and started to emerge from the bag when i returned it to the mud room. I have always pruchased a large bag of black sunflower seed to feed the birds in the winter and this last bag was the first time I have ever had this problem. From now on the seed is staying out on the deck all winter long. Thanks for the video. I had no idea that they might be in my food. Checking and cleaning everything now.

This is how I found out about the moths. I bought sunflower seeds and Yes when I opened the can there they were. I have been battling these for over a year. I bought the traps and they do catch them but I still had them flying around. I threw out all the food in bags and cereals. I washed the shelves and yet I still have them. I am going to get the peppermint oil and then will do a thorough cleaning AGAIN ! this is such a pain. I now put foods in the freezer when I bring them home from the store as one person said they could be in from the factory. So I am doing what I can to finally get rid of these pests. I store my sunflower seeds outdoors all time now.

I really admire you, I have been dealing with this nightmare for almost 9 months, they came in a bag of flour and they took over everything, I called the pest control company and they came to fog my whole kitchen, I had to do everything you did in your video before they smoked. The problem is that they disappear and then 3 weeks later they start to come back, yesterday was the third time they came to smoke the whole house now, because apparently the moths are hatching in cracks and corners of dark spaces, including a whole in my ceiling where I removed a smoke detector. So these little devils literally can eat dust and crumbs that are hidden in other parts of your house. When we broom we spread the crumbs of food and that can keep them alive enough for another cycle. I do have traps, and they work, and I put all my bread and crackers inside the fridge. I don't buy grains anymore, and when I do I eat them right away. I really hope this last treatment will work and I don't have to see ever again one of those things.

This video is really useful. I had already cleaned my pantry once. I had an infestation of cloth moths at the same time which made it really confusing. I was surprised to find the pantry nests in my spice bottles. I keep my most used bottles next to the stove; the lesser used bottles stay in the pantry. The moths loved the little plastic spice bottles with red tops that Vons sells - almost every bottle had larvae in the threads of the bottom, and some of the tops. They hated most the glass bottles with metal tops - not one of my spices with glass bottles and metal tops was affected. Guess what I will be purchasing from now on? Yes they are more expensive. But just the freedom from the creep factor is worth it for me.

You certainly did a thorough job. I had these moths come in in a bag of wild bird seed several years ago, and have been dealing with them ever since. I bough a couple of those zapper things that look like a ping pong racket, and they work really well. You just swing it at them, and pretty easy to hit as it is quite a large surface. I have also used the pantry moth traps. But every now and then more will hatch and come out. Not nearly as many as I used to have, but now keep most foods like that in glass jars or air tight plastic. They are awful to get rid of. You did a great job. Bought a bag of rice home that I didn't have time to store yet, and a week later, I saw a couple of the moths in it. They were probably in it when I bought it, and then hatched. So I threw it into the freezer for a week or so, and will let it warm back up to room temp before putting it in glass. I also use oxygen absorbers, as jarring up rice or something that already has eggs won't help. They will hatch in the jar. But using oxy absorbers, insects can't live without oxygen.

Great detailed video. I have moths that moved into my car. I spent 3 hours cleaning the interior. They had nested under the rear floor mat. Glad I saw this video, since a female can lay 500 eggs, I’m getting the Dr Killigans moth traps!

Thanks so much for this! I did this in my pantry a month ago, and couldn't figure out why they were not going away. But you are SO thorough I am going back in there today. Unfortunately, there is no other place or cabinet to put food in, so I am just going to have to try to clean the pantry itself as best I can. By the way , I have tried 3 different moth traps and the Dr. Killigan are DEFINITELY the only ones that really worked for me. Highly recommend them.

Thank you for such a detailed inspection and cleaning video. And, I would suggest that the light fixture come down and receive the same treatment and to the surrounding areas near electrical box. Insects are attracted to light so, don't ignore. Also. you mentioned peppermint oil in the cleaning solution...one of your viewer's mention putting clove inside open containers and canisters. In addition, I have heard many, many times to use bay leaf inside open items and all containers. Might I also suggest you produce a video for potential infested items entering your home? e.g. I was told to freeze items for at least a week, not 2 days. There is a ton to learn and I am still in discovery mode.

Excellent video. Just found a few today. Found they had been in hazelnuts and almonds in the same bin. I immediately vaccummed up adults like you did, pulled all cans, inspected all, threw away iffy stuff, but instead have frozen all that i think was 'safe'. I plan to keep all in the freezer for a minimum of 3 days. I appreciate the trap review and have ordered some. Also, the tip on wiping down cans. I would not have considered that. Also, on the 'safe'stuff, I have finally put my glass jar hoard ... i mean collection 😂 to use, so I prevent any future infestation in case somehow it happens again or my freezing technique is not effective. Thank you for your great content.

If you don't want to throw everything out, I've read that you can freeze things. That will kill the larvae and the moths. If it's something that you're going to be cleaning and cooking anyway like pasta or dry beans, it's not a big deal. Neither the eggs nor the moths are toxic if you accidentally cook and consume them.

I’ve switched to glass vessels for most open items…Excess is kept in my large freezer until I need to refill said glass container…Large mason jars work great as there are only 2 of us…I’ve given up on any plastic container as smells can get into plastic as well as pests… Recently I’ve noticed these moths when I purchased a 40lb bag of black sunflower seed from Tractor Supply…I’m not too concerned as this is kept in a barrel outside my home… Great informative video…New sub here… 🦋Lily🦋

Thank you! I really wish I could switch to all glass jars. With 5 kids we have to keep a lot of things in bulk and I have a hard time finding quality air tight containers for bulk items. Those cereal containers are the only thing I've found so far. I'm glad you've got a system that works for you, hopefully with that system in place you won't end up with a full blown infestation. They're the worst!

After throwing so much out, anything we wanted to keep went into some waterproof bins I got at Target. This was essentially a detention for our food. Everything went into these bins. Some individual items went into bags or smaller containers. That way we didn’t have to throw away a whole pantry, just a bin if something had eggs left on it. I even got some diatomaceous earth coasters and put a couple in each bin. This dries out the larvae when they hatch. Then I added some cedar shavings in mesh bags and cedar oil. It works similar to the peppermint. We really found out which bins where actually air tight. Sadly I think we’re in for another round. As the temp is getting warmer I’m seeing moths again. I think what I did in the kitchen worked, but wasn’t fast enough. I’m sure they are hatching in other rooms. The best airtight bins we got have been the ikea 365. Of the kids leave something out of the bins, I throw it out. They’ve learned that it’s a quick way to loose a favorite snack. Thanks for the video. Great to know I’m not alone. It’s a big deal having to throw out an entire pantry.

We're on our third summer of these things. We've cleaned every likely spot but haven't found the food source yet! I need to look a lot closer especially in the corners as you've demonstrated. I only see them flying in the air, caught in the traps or two or three on the walls in the morning. Last year we trapped them in every room of the house. The most obnoxious pest ever!
@TheNiftyNester
@TheNiftyNester Год назад
I'm sorry you've been dealing with this for so long! That's the bad thing about these pests. Once they get out of the pantry/kitchen, they're a lot harder to get rid of. They will lay eggs in every nook and cranny they can find, and the larvae can crawl long distances in search of food. I got lucky that I was able to get rid of them before they spread out of the pantry. Good luck and I hope you're able to finally be rid of them this year!

Fyi...I used to get those little brown flour bugs that loved oatmeal, for starters. I learned that those bugs come from the food processor plants and the larvae are packaged right up with the product. I read that anything that has a possibility of having those larvae, should be put in the freezer for 3 days immediately upon arriving at home, and the freezer will kill the bugs and the larvae. I had no idea that's how they were getting in my house. So I started the freezer process and i have not seen a single brown bug. It's been a few years. BUT. I do have the moths and i thought they were gone, until i came downstairs to grab my charger, only to be irritated by a moth that hit my eye. I turned on the light, there they are again! I'm ready to cry, i worked for 5 days this past week. And the worst part now is feeling them on my legs and in my hair. (they're not really, but they creep me out that bad) Thank you so very much for your time and going thru the video so thoroughly. It's been a year for you since you posted that video, have the moths in your pantry returned at all? I just need to know what I'm facing. And so many of us have never dealt with these or even heard of them. They're obviously infested at the food processing plants. Is this their way of getting us to eat the bugs they said we were going to be consuming? Seems like it to me. J/s
