I note the comments of the critics. Perhaps they should put up their own performances for comparison. Brett was already showing his quality as fine musician and superb trombonist here. Come on you smart critics -put up or shut up!
I'd love to be able to play jazz and swing style music. I like this version with a bluesy feel to it and I like how he took the time to thank the man for holding his music stand, shows true professionalism.
Recently had the honour of hearing Brett in concert. What a wonderful player! He demonstrated complete mastery of his instrument and changed his vibrato tastefully to suit each piece and style. If you notice he is playing outside in windy conditions with a noisy crowd and traffic, so give him a break! :)
People complain about the vibrato, calling it excessive... Well, let them try it. If they can get the tone out of a trombone which Brett Baker can, I want to hear THEM. This man has excellent tone.... It's easy to criticize; it's difficult to do it better. Like the Apache Indians ssaid, "It is better to have less thunder in the mouth and more lightning in the hand.":.. LLet's sse something BETTER from you smug critics..
Very good player. Vibrato is ridiculous for this genre and as Don Lusher would say, the equipment is all wrong for this type of playing. Horn is too big as is the mouthpiece. Ideally a .500 bore horn and smaller mouthpiece eg.Bach 11C or 12C or equivilent might get better results.Great exponents of this style have been Urbie Green, Don Lusher, Dick Nash, Si Zentner ,Joe howard and Murray McEchern, just to mention a few. But this man is an excellent trombonist!
Don't like how he does his vibrato? Guess what - that's EXACTLY how it would have been played when it was written, but any good jazz trombonist. Listen to Urbie Green playing ballads, it sounds just like this.
How DARE you insult the great Urbie Green with this garbage, and to say that Urbie would've played it like that is an absolute insult. I expect your ears are nailed on.....
My god that's awful. No style, no feel and what's with the cartoon vibrato? Never seen arm vibrato before. Yikes!! Clearly an excellent player but WAY out of his depth on this.
