Flue gas heat recovery is an innovative method of increasing the efficiency of the hot water system of a combi boiler. The unit is designed to take the excess heat from the flue gasses and extract the heat via a heat exchanger. The heat is absorbed into the incoming mains cold water to the boiler increasing its temperature.
The warmer mains cold supply to the boiler then means that the boiler doesn’t have to work as hard to get the water to the desired hot water temperature.
Benefits of the system include…
Increased efficiency
Less wear and tear on boiler components
Prolonged boiler lifespan
Increased hot water flow rates at specified degree rise
Less of a nuisance plume
Cooler POC temperature
A flue gas heat recovery unit has historically been installed as an additional unit on top of the boiler however, some manufacturers have now taken to installing a modified version of flue gas hear recovery inside their boilers. The ATAG Economiser boasts 96% ERP efficiency achieved by using its inbuilt flue gas heat recovery unit. Baxi also refer to a saving of between 37% and 50% when using their flue gas heat recovery unit.
The units are relatively straightforward to install. Once the unit it in place, all that is left is to take the cold main directly into the unit and take the hot pipe from the unit to the cold inlet on the boiler.
