Ben's language journey with Czech began a little over 50 days ago with a goal, a plan, and a post-it note he wrote it all down on.
The goal? To become fluent in 2 years.
The plan? Well, he goes over that in this video.
The post-it-note? Illegible
Long story short, Ben's goal is to spend ~1.5k hours of Czech in 2 years time, and then take a trip to the Czech Republic. He'll be documenting his progress along the way as he learns the language, so stay tuned.

I love the "Fluent in Two Years" variation on the "Fluent in Three Months" slogan. Good luck on your Czech journey. Looking forward to hearing more about it.

I'm on the cohort that's coming to an end soon and I've got to say, it's been fantastic. There've been some updates to the roadmap that I hadn't even realised and now immersion is not so scary. Ben keeps things light and fun, he's a very personable guy and it's nice to know he's on a similar journey to us. He shows up everyday with the same great energy, thanks for all of your hard work, Ben. I'm not sponsored but I do want to take the time to say that I would have been a bit lost without help from Refold, now everything is so much fun. You also get to playback the videos from the sessions incase you can't make it. I'm a big fan of this method and now I feel like I get it. Thanks again.

One thing, you didn't really mention how good you expect to be after two years. Maybe that's because you don't want to have to live up to certain expectations, but I think it would be interesting to see if you achieve what you expected. I am sure that if you stick to your plan, you will have high level.

I'm happy to see this as I was always interested to see someone documenting the whole refold method in practice - live!

I don’t think I will ever focus on intentionally learning for more than 2 hours per day

Looking forward to hearing about your progress over time... what worked for your routine and what didn't. Also what actually was effective for your learning that surprised you.

Good luck Ben! And I hope you enjoy it. I've been learning Polish for about a year, so it's nice to see you learning a slavic language.

Jak tam Polski po kolejnych dziewięciu miesiącach?
@TheRubenDK
@TheRubenDK 5 месяцев назад

I'm interested how you're learning Czech, a language that doesn't seem to be popular enough to have a refold or refold like Anki deck or much in the way of comprehensible input like Dreaming Spanish. It's cool to see being creative with Refold when there's less onramp content available.

I'm loving all these new videos! I keep retooling my roadmap and schedule as these come out and am extremely excited to benchmark my progress on my monthly work trips to Japan! Also, taking the Ultimate Immersion course has been really good. I was hoping to just have a framework to force myself to consider and process the Refold roadmap, but the content has gone beyond my expectations.

Hello, how many languages you know? German, eng, spanish and? Do you have inst?
@Refold
@Refold 11 месяцев назад
I only speak English and Spanish to high levels. I passed a B2 exam in German several years ago, but I haven't used it in years and don't think I could use it anymore. And I'm studying Czech right now. I personally don't have an Instagram, but you can follow Refold here: instagram.com/refoldla - Ben

Good luck learning your third language. I’m curious if you’ll find it more difficult than your second one. I think it can be harder because now you have to make time for the third one and there’s only so much time.

We're actually testing time travel technology to allow users to immerse for 27 hours per day... In seriousness, though, I am also interested to see what it's like. Luckily, I live in a Spanish-speaking country, work in English and learn Czech, so that means that I naturally will get all three at a baseline. - Ben

Where are you getting your Anki deck? Or how are you making it? Will it have audio?

How do you intend to do an hour of output a day? I.e. the apps, methods, etc that you plan to use.

I know you aren't doing speaking practice for a long time, but how often do you practice pronunciation? Do you speak to yourself at all? Or are you 100% listening and reading until you get to 1000 hours?
@Refold
@Refold 10 месяцев назад
I wouldn't say that I "practice" pronunciation, but I did some initial study of the phonology and sounds of the language to give myself passing knowledge. The only time I say Czech words is occasionally when I'm doing Anki, I'll say the words aloud. But that's really it. I've never tried to form a sentence or thought in Czech. I'll start training that at 1000 hours. - Ben

Interesting choice and quite an ambitious plan. I've been learning Polish for two years mainly through immersion (roughly 80% listening to 20% of reading) and it has gone quite well so far. I waited one year until I started with weekly output and I still feel that I get more from input, BUT getting used to the insane case patterns in Slavic languages imo benefits considerably from some deliberate practice. Polish is my sixth language and by far the most difficult I've learned.

Cieszmy mnie fakt, że ludzie uczą się mojego ojczystego języka. Tak, jest on trudny czasem nawet i dla Polaków :') Powodzenia! Ja szukam skutecznej ścieżki do nauki kazachskiego.
