In this video I am building a stem and mounting block for the new shop barn light. I purchased the dome from a retailer and did all the rest myself. I start by cutting a piece of construction lumber into a block and putting sides on it with glue, nails, and later adding some pocket hole screws just in case. The overhang on the outside lip is about .5", the same thickness as the siding on the building. I used the siding to make a template and cut out the pattern with the jigsaw. This makes for a very good fit against the siding and easy to seal with caulk.

Doesn't pinching down on the vinyl siding with the mounting block cause the siding to deform during expansion and contraction?

Good question. Part of the vinyl is already touching the wall of the building. So as long as you've cut the notches correctly you should only be pinching on the part that's already touching the wall so the rest is not under enough pressure to deform. Hopefully that makes sense.

@@psyched2build just trace an existing piece of siding on to the block of wood. The siding conforms so as long as you're close it will work.

Just take a piece of scrap siding and lay it on a flat surface then put the block next to it. You can trace the profile with a pencil.

@@cookcrazy you lock two pieces in to get the reveal so you can see where they sit on the main piece. It doesn't have to be super precise. You want to leave some space for expansion and caulk it in after.
