Flutist reacts to Tinkara feat. Ian Anderson (from Jethro Tull) - Place 2 B 

Several years ago, I met a woman that claimed to be a classical trained flutist. She told me that Ian could not play the flute, did not hold it properly, had poor posture and did not blow or finger it correctly. In general, Ian should give up playing the flute. Yet, Ian did so much in helping to promote new flute players in his time (me). Ian proved that a flute could be used in Rock music, with great success. I often wonder what obscurity this arrogant woman need up in with her life? Thank you Heline, for being so kind and not taking the road to tearing apart Ian's imperfections on the flute. Ian did it his way. Yup, I love Jethro Tull and also your channel!....I am a new subscriber.

I’ve been a life long Jethro Tull fan and found you because of your reaction. At the time of his first tour, around 1970, I was married to a classically trained flutist. She studied with the first chair flutist of the New York Philharmonic. She liked JT even though on his first albums she pointed out that he wasn’t really a good flutist. But she also saw how much he improved and quickly. I think she first was attracted by the inventiveness of his style. Personally, for me as a lover of all kinds of music from classical, jazz, blues, folk and rock, it was just a breath of fresh air to see something in rock that was completely different from most rock bands. Some of my favorite albums to this day are Tull albums. I like the way the music changes in their songs through acoustic, folk, hard rock, and almost Medieval in some albums. The Songs From the Wood” album being especially notable for this. I’ve played many instruments in my life, (piano, trumpet, French horn, classical guitar and electric focusing on jazz) but never mastered them to a professional level.😢 I appreciate the complexity of some of Tull’s arrangements and the professionalism of his bands. Never saw a bad concert from them, unlike many disappointing rock concerts that were memorable for how bad they were.😂 Anyway, I just want to say how much I appreciate you, your reactions, and your music. Keep up the great work.

Ian Anderson and Jethro Tull is one of my favourite artist/band. The flute duel was great.

Amazes me how over time Ian drew her in as a fan . One tid bit … when Ian would do sound check he would make everyone swap instruments as he is a perfectionist and yes i miss the old JT but a buddy of mine showed up early for a JT show in the late 70’s and saw the whole instrument swap!!!

She is classical trained flute player. Tinkara Kovač studied classical flute at the Conservatory of Trieste (read on Wikipedia)

You should check out the Jethro Tull song "Roots to Branches." He plays an Indian bamboo flute on that one. One of the best intros and outros of any Tull song.

I think Ian practiced a lot with the glissando while using the bamboo flute during the 90s. As a traditional flute without keys and just the holes you must master the glissando technique to be really expressive.

I don't need dueling, but love Ian's flute playing and your reaction to the duel. Thank you so much for your efforts to share your perspectives with non-musicians like me who care about music.

"Eurovision" simply means there was a set-up to be able to broadcast programs simultaneously to several European countries. One of those programs was the European Song Contest. But other stuff was also broadcast, like several boxing matches from Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali, some sporting events like the 1968 Olympics (Mexico) and some such. Sixty, seventy years ago, a simultaneous broadcast to several countries at the same time wasn't that easy and required a lot of people watching a lot of accumulated transmissions to be able to synchronise those signals and send them to diferent countries simultaneously.

He has been a goto for me to listen to since the 70's, and now you are my goto to listen with. 😍 (I'll watch you watch him. Not in a weird way, it's just that you enjoy him the same way I did/do.) How come you don't listen to Eurovision stuff. Don't you remember that the great Vesku Loiri represented Finland in 1980 with the song "Huilumies" ("Fluteman", last place, six pöäng 😜). This video was interesting. For me it looked mostly Ian Anderson's show. But then again, he was the distinguished guest there. 🌞😎👍

Eurovision songfestival instrumental performances are always dubbed. Artists can choose to sing live but aren't allowed to play their instuments live.

The 'clicking' sound is Anderson intentionally making that sound with his tongue. The first twelve minutes sounds more like a jazz jam. The woman is young and it's very clear who the Master is here!

Still waiting for Tim Weisberg and Herbie Mann reaction videos, please. Always nice to hear Ian certainly. I thought the band's dynamics were good, playing rather softly. It's also in the hands of the engineer who is mixing it live. Heline is in flute heaven with two flutists! :)

Ya know....Ian's voice, as many have mentioned, is not in perfect form anymore.....and watching Tull live can be a little hard at times.....but....When he was singing the lower part of the song with Tinkara....That actually sounded really good! Maybe Ian, instead of trying to sing everything himself, or having someone take over on some songs, should turn some of the classic Tull songs into vocal duets, where he can sing the lower harmony, and someone else can do the upper register that he has so much trouble with now........ I think that would work really well based on what I saw here. I really enjoyed this number!

Curious why no one has directed you to Peter Gabriel's flute playing with Genesis? Not it the same league as Ian Anderson, but interesting and beautifully evoked. 'Firth of Fifth' is a good start, but there is a lot more, even into his final album with them 'The Lamb Lied Down on Broadway'. You would have to do excerpts unless you are into Progressive Rock.

Ian has a lot more experience and knows lots of tricks. You’re right. Very enjoyable. Is your car air conditioner running okay now? 😉

It's easy for us musicians to see fakery in live performances (most of them are these days, especially big events or TV shows). I usually roll my eyes and move on. As a guitarist, I saw the movie August Rush and just yelled at the screen. Bands like Rush or Dream Theater will have musical integrity however, but I believe the older ways are generally over.

Don't overthink it, is about the collaboration. You say he is now using his pinkey but his positioning of his right hand is no different from the 60's when he first started. He still displays the limited movement caused by his defective pinkey and compensating by hitting notes differently with his other fingers. What cannot be denied is that Ian is a modern day virtuoso. His playing is unique and like many of his followers find his playing hypnotic and far superior to toss pot flute playing snobs. Get a life girl. When's your next concert and how many people turn up.I wish to point out that when I first saw one of your videos when you criticised his fingering I pointed out that his pinkey was deformed in a birth defect. I have followed your channel but I am disappointed that you persevere with adverse critique.
