Andrew (Andy) Latimer, the guitarist and flute player and founder of Camel, taught himself to play the flute, just like Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull did. However, Latimer's main instrument is the (electric) guitar with the flute as a kind of add-on. Rhyader is a part of the instrumental concept album "The Snow Goose" from 1975. In 2014 Camel did their "In from the Cold Tour" and opened with the entire The Snow Goose as the first set and a selection of some of Camel's best various tracks in the second set, encoring with a smashing version of "Lady Fantasy" (which can be found at Camel's RU-vid channel). This tour is available on DVD, and I highly recommend it. Besides guitar and flute, Latimer also plays keyboard and pan pipes. Personally I consider Latimer on par with Ian Anderson, David Gilmour, Mike Oldfield, Mark Knopfler, and Eric Johnson as a composer/guitarist, and I think that his guitar solo on the title track from "Stationary Traveller" is unsurpassed.

The other player was Mel Collins (i think) he was has a flute solo in "Cadence and Cascade" a from King Crimson (you reviewed Ian McDonald's I Talk to the Wind a while back) Mel replaced Ian in KC after Ian went on to found the band Foreigner ..he is a very well known sax player and like I said played the solo on Cadence and Cascade which I wish someone could explain to me how he pulls off those "chromatic" glissandos on someday. Maybe you might look at that one in the future? The problem is finding a live video of it. Camel has Supertwister also you could look at.

yeah I saw gentle giant the first time on a four-way hit of acid. I play several instruments and they were so good. Absolutely mind-blowing. I've also seen camel. Seen Jethro Tull four times. Love the flute The Moody blues. Enjoyed the flute in King crimson, I talk to the wind... Ya seeing her reactions are really cool. Now I'm going to have to go watch her play. Enjoyed your comment.

The original Snow Goose album was recorded when the group was a four piece. Andy Latimer played the flute harmonized by Peter Bardens' Moog. This is from a later incarnation of the band when primarily Saxophonist Mel Collins was added and Richard Sinclair had replaced Doug Ferguson on bass.

I saw Camel in concert twice in the 1970s, the first time was after the release of the "Mirage" album and then again after the release of "Snow Goose", they very definitely didn't use sheet music in those concerts. Personally I far preferred "Mirage" to the "Snow Goose" concept album. As for for Rhayader (pronounced Rayder by most people I know in Radnorshire) it is a small town in Mid Wales and also a character from the book "The Snow Goose" on which the concept album was based. Camel was regarded as a very talented bunch of musicians in the 1970s but never had the success of other prog-rock bands like Genesis, Supertramp or Jethro Tull.

Camel is a world wide famous band. Camel mainly plays symphonic tracks. Andy Latimer is famous for his guitar work like Gilmour from Pink Floyd. Andy plays quite a lot of flute on certain tracks which enhances the music sensation whilst listening. Camel is regarded as one of the best and well loved bands on the prog genre. They toured in 2019 and every ticket was sold out before the actual released date published.

Hi Heline, so glad you got to this! I think there are sync issues with this video (for instance look at the tambourine accents not fitting with the beat at all), so breaths being taken while the flute sounding would be down to this. This video is taken from a BBC 'Sight And Sound' programme from 1977/8 which was a simultaneous TV & radio broadcast. From memory, this is the audio from that broadcast, just there have clearly been some issues in the render and upload of the clip :-) BTW, you might like to look out for John Hackett, brother of ex-Genesis member Steve Hackett. There is footage around of John playing with Steve, like from 5:05 here - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lIB-nYHJNzE.html :-)

Also, if you are truly interested in flute as used in rock music I might (must) suggest Chris Wood of the group Traffic. Not at all of recent time, but one of the first to involve wind instrument as a main element in group composition. Of course this was not unusual in jazz music, and Traffic had much jazz element to their style.

Hi Heline, the way I hear it the recording is actually from the studio album and the video is from a live gig - hence the discrerpancies you heard. That's why you heard no saxophones. Here is the link to the actual live version ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IRYS-AecOM0.html&ab_channel=MarkMarcad%C3%A8

Andy Latimer also plays Pan Flute in either "Stationary Traveller" or "Long Goodbyes." Also, the part where the song changes with the organ is "Rhayader Goes to Town." The other instruments on the floor could be so they could play "Friendship," which is from the same album. A good suggestion mostly because of the classical inklings, despite not having any flute in it, is Genesis' "Firth of Fifth."

You might be right about this video being mixed with studio music but it might be that the sound is lagging behind a bit. Lite travels faster than sound as I'm sure you know so you have to do some technical wizardry to sinc them up. Or so I've heard.

Has anyone requested The Moody Blues, Nights in White Satin, live? The late Ray Thomas is doing something that almost sounds like a bent note on the flute, though it might be just a chromatic descent. I can't tell how it is done. The official live video seems slightly out of synch.

Didn't know you have this channel! Nice video. This song is from the album "The Snow Goose". It's almost entirely instrumental. The audio you are listening is the original studio recording of 1975. Someone must just put the audio on another video :-) . The flutist and the guitarrist are the same (Andrew Latimer). The last part is the begining of the next song (Rhayader Goes To Town). I recommend you the song Nimrodel/The Procession/The White Rider from the album Mirage. Cheers! :-)

Definitely played live. It was a BBC Sight and Sound in Concert broadcast in 1977 (I watched it at the time as a teenager, including Peter Bardens' Moog synth going horribly out of tune, so there were no overdubs or they would have corrected that). Mel Collins (on the left) is a great reeds/woodwind player, Andrew Latimer (guitar) played the flute on the studio album this track is from. Check out Jimmy Hastings (Caravan) as another great sax/flute player in the rock and jazz field, especially his sublime flute solo in Hatfield and the North's Didn't Matter Anyway. ru-vid.com?search_query=didn%27t+matter+anyway+hatfield+and+the+north
