On the Flutter vs Security Infrastructure thing, Idk either. Off the top of my head is simply password protection, from an input box, and secure memory traversing into native android channel/plugin. In other words, memory hacking, binary hacking, memory hacking/leaks/data dupe across channels. Not really an argument specific to Flutter. Maybe whoever wanted to sound smart. You go off and buy a third-party plugin for Flutter, who do you trust? Risk in the dev community. That sort of thing exists everywhere. What else could he be talking about Flutter specific?

I'm a native developer, I think that it depends also on where you live. In developping countries, flutter is really becoming a thing despite the shortcoming you mentionned in your video. People tend to chose what's cheaper so you see a growing number of compagnies that are looking for flutter developpers. I'm actually considerating learning it for that reason.

Unless you run into things where you need deep dive in native stuff, the development in Flutter is extremely nice experience. That is also pretty nice reason why you should dive into it, even for some limited time to test the waters, so you don't look dumb when you talk about it, like TechLead :-)

If one already know object oriented programming, one can learn Flutter in one week (3 hrs a day). I done it myself and I use it for a very small apps to be used internally. My opinion: - Native Android development is like holding someone by the balls, even if they resist if you give a bit of squeeze and you will get your answer. - Flutter development is like holding someone by the shoulders and asking them to answer your question. One may or may not answer your question. I think that is a big risk to take.

There are a lot of points of view that have to be taken into account when talking about security. Security is not only on the side of the server and communications. Without going into too much detail, we could talk about: - How to attack an application by installing it on a rooted device and how to access its private files and information. - How it minify and obfuscates flutter code. - Which options does flutter offer when working and installing custom certificates. In conclusion, the issue of security on mobile devices is not trivial and although I'm sure that this kind of platforms spend a lot of effort on this issue, I do not know how far they have covered all the requirements of complex business applications. In any case, it has been a very enlightening video. Thank you very much for this video Mitch. Congrats!

Flutter is huge money and time saver for big percent of the companies who wants mobile app, for whatever reason. And it also enables huge chunk of developers who never built a mobile app to build one. But like you said, the very advanced apps or apps which relies heavily on native features might still better be build with native. Like anything in IT world, even Flutter is surely NOT a silver bullet. Loved the video though, you made good points and valid arguments.
@_jfsanchez_

You can always use Flutter for the 90% of the app, that small native requirement, you hire a freelancer to implement it natively and then you integrate it on your Flutter part.
@kahanx10
@kahanx10 Год назад
I would say that even for a simple app like WhatsApp that relies just on the camera and some media files when it comes about native features, Flutter isn't suitable at all, I'm a Flutter dev myself btw. Flutter is suitable only for apps that don't require ANY native features, for example Google Pay.

Great video, thank you very much. 1 more advantage that you didn't talk about with flutter is "flutter for web", which means that in appropriate cases you can host your flutter app on the web. I made a few apps with flutter (coming from Ionic background) and it was really great until it's not. I had an issue with the bounce effect when scrolling stuttering really badly on android, and had to edit flutter's internal dart files to get it fixed. So there might be cases where you'll find issues with flutter itself but at least you can solve them without waiting for flutter team to get to your issue.

Thanks for a more detailed view! About the APK size, you do no specify if the apk is in the release or debug mode. On debug mode, the apk includes the webserver to communicate with the Dart VM, a Dart VM itself, and a lot of things. On release mode, Dart is compiled AOT so the size is much smaller. I've uploaded a Flutter app today to play store, and the version manager says that the download size will be "between 7,38 and 7,90 MB".

Most of the things said about what Flutter is great for is little misleading We have an application that used Bluetooth(BLE, beacons), camera scanning(Document, QR Code), and GPS location. All of the above "sensors" were written native as a library for Android & iOS and they perform fantastically. For more hardcore stuff like voice calls or AI over camera analysis, I would agree due to some real hardware usage, but flutter coverage far greater than "a gym guy wants an app". Even the new UI building tools for ios and android like Compose, for example, are very close to what Flutter stands for, lets not forget it's a project from Google a company leading in mobile development. I've heard the same suspicious behaviour for Kotlin when firstly come out but now it's a main programming language for most of the app developers out there (same boat for swift).

I have been developing in React Native. When you talk about the pros and cons of Flutter, it seems to draw parallels with React Native. Without a community both platforms are doomed. React is cool though because it can also be used for the web. I don't know if Flutter is or not. Either way, both platforms depend on the community. Both iOS and Android native platforms are constantly changing so the community must keep up. If you get something working correctly on Android, you may test it on iOS and discover strange behavior. With that said, they can both save time which = $$$$. Great analysis Mitch. Thanks
