Unboxing and Assembling my new Fluval 307 Canister filter for my 30 gallon African Cichlid tank. A little over kill for a tank of this size but can never go wrong with too much filtration and on the plus side, I’m looking to upgrade my tank to a 55+ gallon in the near future.
~
The Fluval 307 Canister Filter is rated for aquarium tanks ranging from 40-70 gallons. This filter can be used for both Freshwater and Saltwater.

Thanks so much! Excellent guide for setting up the 307. After I unpacked the media trays I forgot the correct sequence arrangement for the bottom two baskets so I’m grateful for your video so I could get that right. Thanks again for taking the time to share, great job!

I have been watching lots of videos on how to set this filter up. It's easier for me to see it done than to read. This was one of the best I have seen on this. My issue though was I needed to know where to cut the hose and how to install the filter onto the tank. You did not show those..

I appreciate you 🙏 Im glad I was able to help you and you found the video helpful. I do apologize for not getting the hose cutting on video and I’m sure I’m probably to late but i just cut the hose directly in the middle to give myself two equal size pieces and cut away any excess if needed if the hoses were still to long.

Question: How often do I need to clean the filter?
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics 3 месяца назад
@@elchangata typically if you’re on top Of you weekly water changes you don’t have to clean out the filter that often. For me, I’ll do it about every 6 months. If your testing your water regularly as you should and the parameters look great other then Nitrate levels which decrease with water changes, then sometimes you can go a little longer but until you get the hang of this routine, every 4-6 months is probably a safe bet.

that lever on the top of the filter head is actually a bellows you can use once you have the hoses hooked up to the tank to prime the filter with water from the tank then all you have to do is plug it in

Does anyone know if it's ok not to have the Media Basket Cover on the top of the media? When I had mine it made a very loud noise so I'm assuming against the propeller.
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
Not sure if you could but I wouldn’t remove it simply because it was designed to operate with in on there. Plus, it helps direct the flow of the water leaving the canister more efficiently with that hole on it. That’s just my two sense. If you decide to run it without the cover let me know how it performs

I’m just curious on the tubing I just bought one today and have one hose so are we suppose to cut it ?
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
Yes! Fluval only includes one hose but with plenty of length for most tanks. I extended mine and matched it end to end and cut it in the middle with cooking scissors. If anything you can trim off a little more at a time until you have the perfect length for your input and output

Is there a reason why the blue sponge is placed vertically? Isn't it better if the pre filter sponge is placed horizontally? Maybe then there won't be any missed debris to go to the bio media? Cool video bro!!
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics 2 года назад
Hey so thanks for the question first of all but like Citylights said along with being easier for maintenance, the filter is sort of split in halves. So in other words on the intake side the water comes into the canister filling up the half with the blue sponges which then forces water through to white coarse sponges. Once that happens the water is then forced down and up through the the other side of the filter where it goes through the last set of semi coarse black sponges before filtering thru the rest of the media. I hope that all made sense lol. I can definitely make a video on this to make it easier to understand, just let me know! Thanks for the support!
@edwin_chew
@edwin_chew 2 года назад
@@tgmaquatics i understand how it works actually. Now that i install a sponge on the intake strainer.. the blue sponge pre filter in cannister kind of seems unnecessary.. as the baskets for the bio media seems kind of small, i was thinking about modifying the pre filter side for more bio media.. i know i should hv bought a bigger cannister but now that i already own a 307as thot that i can make it more efficient.. what do you think? Thank for the reply!
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics 2 года назад
I’ve seen people throw a filter on the intake tube but I’m not sure if they’ve had the idea you have which sounds pretty legit. I would love to hear about what you come up with for modifications.

These carbon filters are dust or small stones-like stuff? I recently got a Fluval 307 and I got stone-like stuff in a net bag.
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
Yea, carbon comes in those bags as small granules. The purpose of carbon is to adsorb a number of dissolved contaminants such as chloramine and chlorine, tannins (which color the water), and phenols (which cause odors)

So do you just cut the hose in half?
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
That’s exactly what I ended up doing and it worked out for me. You just wanna make sure that you create a direct path up to the tank with as little bends as possible so that you get the best flow.

@clarissamead8354 7 месяцев назад
just wondering how your hose worked out cut in half? I just watched a video that said the outtank hose needs to be shorter for better filtration? I am temporary putting this filter beside the tank and wondering how it would work just cut in half?@@tgmaquatics

Is this filter fine for a 55gal ?
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
So starting out the answer is yes. I currently run this filter on my 55gal with ZERO issues with water quality for over a year now. If you want crystal clear water with very minimal particles floating around you should go bigger. Over filtration is always a good thing. Just remember, filtering your tank isn’t enough no matter how much if you’re not keeping up with scheduled water changes. Thanks for checking out the video, you might find some more helpful stuff in the others.

I hear using carbon with a planted tank is a bad idea?
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
So typically carbon is really only used to removed odor from your tank water or to neutralize any chemicals/medications from your water. If you’re asking if it’s necessary the answer is no especially if you’re adding fertilizers to your planted tank as the carbon will do it’s best to remove it.
@TequillanSunrise
@TequillanSunrise Год назад
@@tgmaquatics I wasnt sure how it could be bad for plants I was always told to remove carbon if you have live plants. I get mixed information honestly. I got a 307 comin just watching videos. So far yours is the best sir.
@tgmaquatics
@tgmaquatics Год назад
9/10 times people will say to remove carbon for the reasons I stated earlier. Filters are usually sold with carbon and the fish keeping hobby is always advertised with carbon in starter packs and what not and it’s made it seem like it’s a must have when it really isn’t. If you wanted to us carbon you definitely could but I’d would remove it for 24-48 hours when adding fertilizers or any additives to your water so that it has a chance to do what you want before adding the carbon back in because it will neutralize whatever you put in the water. I’m glad you found my video helpful. I’m a consumer in this hobby too and I have all the same questions so I try to be a thorough as possible. Hope you enjoy the others just as much 😊
