I have the new Fluval Spec, 5 gallons, planted, with nothing but a male betta in it, I just introduced 2 small otos, hope to see them all happy tomorrow morning ;)

I'm finally stopping by to see your tank, and I'm liking it a lot! I can back Centerman19 up on placing a betta in a fluval edge. My betta has been living happily in his tank for 9+ months now. I will be uploading an update on my tank as well in the next few days.

I use a syphon. Fluval makes a syphon for this tank, but I just bought a small syphon and cut the pick up side of the syphon to a size that I was comfortable using. I also cut the end of the syphon at an angle to help get into the corners. It works great.

The filter is a HOB filter it is hidden inside the back portion of the tank. That is one of the great features about the Fluval Edge tank... it is a really clean tank that hides all the filter lighting and cords.

The algae cleaner is a "Otocinclus" Found at almost every local fish store. They are perfect for this aquarium, because the stay really small and do a great job cleaning. I highly recommend one of them for this tank.

Your advice is very helpful and your tank looks absolutly splendid! Well done! I've bought the 2nd generation 46litre and am currently debating on how to stock it. After seeing your video I think i'll add a Betta with some zebra/pearl/leopard danio. :D

I've had my beta in my tank for 10 months now and he is completely happy. The filter does not affect him getting to the surface. The filter current only affects a portion of the opening. I've also seen many of these tanks with beta's and they have all seemed to do just fine. I don't think your beta was killed by the filter, it was probably another cause.

Yes there is a heater installed. It is behind the plants on the right hand side.

@persuazn I have one "Otocinclus" they stay small, but do a great job cleaning the tank. I thought I was going to need two of them. I'm glad I only got the one because there wouldn't be enough algae for two of them. There is no visible algae any where to be found in my tank.

You never want to change it unless the sponge starts to fall apart. The BioMax media is inside a netted bag and never should be changed either. Like I said earlier, "that is where the GOOD bacteria live". I suggest to purchase the $3.00 sponge filter that slips on the filter intake tube, it really helps to stop the large debris from entering the main filter. Also, only rinse it in old tank water. I've never replaced mine and both sponges are still in perfect condition. Just replace the carbon.

Yes I have the sponge that Fluval makes for this tank filter intake. It helps a lot. It stops the larger debris from getting into the internal filter. Be sure to clean the filters in the used water that you removed from the tank. DO NOT rinse them under your tap water, that will kill all the good bacterial in the filter.

So when would I need to change the sponge filter and biomax filter?? I just went to my local pet store and the lady said I could do it every 6 months but that seems like at long time to me! It would be great though... Thank you so much for your time

@persuazn I don't think you should be worried about the Betta, especially if he seemed fine the next morning. Mine has never had a problem. As far as the LED's, This is the 2nd generation Fluval Edge that comes stock with 21 LED's. I added Two more strips of LED's that I purchased from Ebay and wired them to a separate and Plug. It cost me about $25.00 total. You can just replace your stock halogens with M11 LED bulbs. It will make a big difference in brightness, heat & energy cost.

I am currently thinking about getting one of these fish tanks for my two gold fish. I have always thought these tanks looked great. Do you recommend that I get one of those otocinclus cleaners? Also, how do you actually do the water change, and does it mess up your set up? I just am trying to figure everything out before I buy this. Thanks.

Was there any problems with the Beta and whatever other fish that go up to the surface for air, not finding where the air spot was, or was it not an issue?

Neons are very delicate fish. They could die just from the stress or poor water conditions. Try hardier Tetras or I recommend Danio's. Your local fish store should be able to help you pick something out that will work with your tank.

I do have a heater inside my tank. It is installed like any other heater, the cord runs down inside the back of the black plastic cover that hides the filter and the cords for the lights and filter.

I have no trouble with mine making noise. It's a great filter, it is made by AquaClear, they make great filters.

what other kind of fish are in with that Betta ? I tried putting mine in with Danios and he was not happy at all. Left them alone for a while and then discovered it was fun nipping at them.

I just finished cycling mines also! I put my Betta in there last night and he looks to be confused. Should I be worried? I observed him this morning and he seems okay. I'm guessing because the tank is new. Also how'd you do the LED mods? Mines came with the halogens.

Yes, I know that. I state that in my video. The Beta is doing just fine, he has been in there for 10 months now and he is super happy.

Gold Fish are Cold water fish, the Otocinclus is a tropical warm water fish. I would not recommend putting the two together. Water changes are done with a syphon gravel cleaner. I clean my tank twice a month and I do need to move things around a little, put it's not that bad. Keep in mind that Gold fish are notoriously DIRTY Fish and may need to be cleaned more often depending how many fish you plan to have. It's a great tank, but I'd recommend getting a heater and going with tropical fish.

do your plants stay alive without a CO2 source? i have always had trouble keeping plants alive in my tanks and i bought one of these 4 weeks ago, it has been set up since then and i have 1 african cichlid in it. 3 fairly large peices of drift wood, and i think some plants would look really nice, but im scared to put them in.

Thanks for the compliment! I am NOT using CO2, I wanted to keep this aquarium simple. There are many plants that are easy to keep. I have some Anubis, java fern, and a couple others that I'm not sure of the names. There is a link to my newest updated video, you can see the link below this video.

You need to cover the filter with a sponge or a baffle if its too strong for the Betta. Also, Bettas do not get all their oxygen from the water. They have to have access to air.

GORGEOUS! I had a beautiful tank--for about a month. Then my plants got nasty brown algae (or something awful)--and it went down hill from there. :o(

This Fluval Edge has the 21 LED's, and they do not need to be replaced. LED's last a very long time and use very little wattage. Also they produce very little heat. As far as my heater... I believe it is 25 watts. I have changed my lighting modification sense this video, there is a link below this video to my new video.

I know its made to fill up to the top. How would it look if it was filled 3/4 to the top. I'm looking to use it for turtles. I heard somewhere that the filter can be noisy. I was wondering if it was louder with the water level lower. Thanks:)

I had the same issue and realized that this was because the water flow was set at the maximum. Try to put it at the lowest, and you will get rid of the bubble right away. Problem solved.

The filter may have too much water flow for the betta to effortlessly reach the air opening.

You really don't need to do 50% weekly. I do about 20% every 2 weeks. I would recommend getting a Otocinclus algae eater fish, that should help some. Also, how often do you have your light on each day? I would recommend only 8-9 hours or less, otherwise algae will grow more easily. Check with your local fish store on help for getting rid of it, some algae is more difficult to get rid of then others.

I actually already have 1- Betta, 4- Zebra Danios & 1- Otocinclus in my tank. That is all I want in there, as I don't want to overstock my tank. Plus Neon Tetras are much more fragile than the fish I selected and I wanted fish that zipped around the tank like the Danio fish. The Neon's are not as entertaining to watch in my opinion unless you have a large group (12 or more) shoaling.

I have changed my tank a bit sense this video was made. I have posted a link below this video that will take you to my new one. I currently have 2 pink Danio's, 1 Beta, 1 Electric Blue Ram and 1 otocinclus (algae fish). I have also upgraded my lighting and added more plants.

Hi I have the same tank.im concerned of the beta.I had a beta and the filter killed it in with in 6-7 weeks because it was to strong and betas absolutely hate filters.and you shouldn't worry about how the beta needs a hole at the top.because the live plants produce oxygen for the fish.if you keep it in there it is very likely to die because of the filter

Hi, You DO NOT want to replace your Sponge Filter or the BioMax filter. ONLY CHANGE THE CARBON once every 2-3 weeks. A three pack box is only $6.00 The Beneficial bacteria live in the sponge and BioMax pellets, only rinse the sponge in the old tank water when doing a 20% water change to clean it. DO NOT use tap water as this will kill the beneficial bacteria that your tank needs. I hope this helps you out.
