I decided to get the other Fluval Spec. This time I set up the 2.6 gallon and compare it to the 2 gallon side by side.

Just purchased this tank last night, wanted to upgrade my son's Betta tank. He has had the same Aqueon 2.5 bowfront Betta tank for the last 8 or 9 years and has a fair amount of scratches on it since it's plastic or plexiglass so it doesn't look as crystal clear as it once did. I put about 1/2 of his water from his old tank in the new Fluval and the other half is fresh water, going to let it run for about 4 or 5 days before I move his Betta to his new home. Love the quality and design of the Fluval Spec. I was initially a little shocked at the price tag, but after watching a few videos I see that it's a great little tank and I can tell it's a substantial upgrade over the old tank. His Betta is about 4 or 5 years old so I'm sure he will be glad to have a new environment to swim around in. Also thinking about adding a couple buddies for him......maybe a Cory catfish and an African Dwarf frog ?? Not sure yet but I'll get the Betta transported over first and go from there. Great video , once I watched it I was sold on the Fluval. Now I'm thinking about getting my own and putting it in my office room at home. Would give me something to look at to relax and de-stress after a long day at work. I love the way you set yours up, live plants are definitely the way to go.

Thanks for this amazing video! I have been struggling for the past week trying to find a good nano tank. There's a ton of different styles and I was finding it all a little confusing. I am a very couscous buyer. I had come to find that Fluval was a great brand in both design and filtration. But I was still on the edge because I was concerned about a couple reviews, I really needed an example of how it worked and what it would need to maintain it. So Thank You again! I am a very visual person and your video was exactly the information I was looking for!!

I just recently started a planted 3 gal & started watching your videos as well. I appreciate how you show the whole process and explain everything & especially that you show the tank again a little later. If you're able to answer a little question; I noticed you stocked this tank with more then just a betta. I see tons of conflicting opinions online about how much bio load a small tank can take, from saying nothing should go in a tank under 5 gal to insisting multiple critters can go in a 3 gal ... what's your experience like with stocking small tanks like this? I want to introduce a betta into my tank and a clean-up crew would be great (a couple shrimp?) but I don't want to push it in the face of advice otherwise. My water parameters have been excellent and my filter medium is super grimy with bacteria.

My power supply also was getting way too hot for my liking and switched it out to the same compact florescent you installed. I am finding some good deals on LED lighting for small nano tanks online. I bought this aquarium for my pearl betta, but the flow is a little to hard for him. He gets drifted away when he gets anywhere near the filter flow. I tried pinching a little of the flow on the tube but I feel like it’s still a little to hard. Is there anything I can do to make sure my little guy doesn’t get overwhelmed with the flow?

I get these sponges that are made as prefilters for hang on back filters. Fluval makes one for the edge for example. And I put it over where the water comes out. Slows it way way down.

I bought this tank for my son last year, thought it would be cool to add I've plants........turned out to be a horrible decision. The plants ended up disintegrating, shortly thereafter thr tank was overrun with algae. I can only attribute this to the live plants, never had this issue with silk plants. Ended up having to disassemble the whole setup 6 months later and scrub the tank top to bottom to remove the insane amounts of algae. There was so much of it that it pretty much formed a moss bed over the gravel. Tried regular water changes, even changed 2× a week and nothing seemed to get rid of the algae. Starting over and hopefully this won't be an issue again. Using fake plants this time even though it looked so much better (initially) with live greenery

Absolutely loved your video! I've been researching tanks for my first Betta and your video really did a great job of demonstrating how the initial set up is done. One question though... you said initially that the filter was a little strong, but after running for a while it slowed down. If I put this on the lowest setting, would it be better? I'm just a bit worried about my male Betta not being able to handle the flow. Thanks!

Lol yeah I went through that at first. You can rinse it off in aquarium water now and then to help keep the pores free for the bacteria to grow. But only aquarium water not tap water. Drain some in a bucket and knock it around a bit.

Hello I’m wondering how to put in the filter on the back. I just want to make sure I put it in right? I alsooo didn’t use any water conditioner yet to set up my filter media. My box didn’t come with any directions so this is my first shrimp aquarium but I’m just setting up I don’t have any shrimp yet. Can you tell what I can do now to make my media safe or should I just completely get new media etc? The filter is supposed to be on the bottom of the tank correct or what you call the water pump I guess? And the long tube should come up and go through the hole correct? Is the water supposed to be strong that comes out?
@pecktec
@pecktec 4 года назад
It doesn’t need to be super powerful coming out of there. Definitely use water conditioner every time you put water in. If the media is used go ahead and grave some more and maybe a new sponge if it’s not to expensive. You can see how the pump goes in the video. I have a playlist with all the spec versions and many different setups and maintenance advice.

@drgnfrc13
@drgnfrc13 8 лет назад
There's no need to pour dechlorinator on brand new media after rinsing it with tap water... The amount of chlorine that will remain in the media is negligible and won't have any appreciable affect on anything. You just don't want to rinse the media from an established aquarium with tap water because it will kill off the bacteria (I don't think dechlorinator would help after the damage is already done in that case).
@pecktec
@pecktec 8 лет назад
I don't think you get what i was saying. I was referring to the chemical filtration. So if you add some AFTER the tank is set up and you want to rinse it in tap water for what ever reason you should clear out the chlorine. I wasn't super clear on that.
@drgnfrc13
@drgnfrc13 8 лет назад
pecktec I understand, but I don't think that's necessary. Unless the chlorine concentration of your tap water is extraordinarily high, there really shouldn't be enough chlorine left on your media after rinsing to cause issues in the aquarium. Fish are not nearly as chlorine-sensitive as we sometimes think they are. I wouldn't even think shrimp would be affected by such a small amount of chlorine.

I just bought the fluval 2.6 as betta fish tank. Everything I have read online said I could only add shrimp or a snail to this tank with the betta. Have you had any issues with the endlers you added? How many did you add? Any other possible tank mates you might try in a tank that size?
@delysid_ag
@delysid_ag 7 лет назад
I did not understand what kind of fish are the ones living with the betta. I am currently fishless cycling a 5.3 gal tank for a betta and a substrate snail, but i would really like to add some more life form that could live together. Also, my tank uses a sponge filter, not an internal one.

@jackrothrealestate
@jackrothrealestate 8 лет назад
+Dave B yes you'll definitely need a heater, as they're tropical fish. I recommend water that is 74-78 Fahrenheit (23-25 C). As far as heaters go, look up different models and what not and order off amazon.co.uk (: A 25w heater should be plenty for a tank this size.

@pecktec I've had my fluval ege 6 about 4 months. I still have the original bio filter which we rinse with tank water about every 2 weeks. My question is, how long should we keep the bio bag? Do we have to replace it ever? Tank water is clean. I test it regularly for ph, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, all clear. Do about 25% - 30% water change every 2 weeks. This tank houses 1 betta fish and some live plants. Thanks and keep up the good work.
@pecktec

The bio stuff lasts forever. Sometimes it is good to clean it up with aquarium water that you are removing with a water change. Never untreated tap water. But that all you do with that stuff.

Should I maybe lose the suction cup to provide more room for the heater in that compartment? I have it on the inside of the tank to be safe right now but I’d love not to see it. Mine has been shoved in there before too. It’s not a huge deal I don’t think. The biggest thing to notice is that as the tank evaporates that chamber empties first. That more dangerous than the cable thing so keep an eye on it.

@bieber9478 3 года назад
Will do. Thanks so much. I assume you are treating the water with prime or whatever you use that you replace. It’s not that much but I’m guessing I should still treat what I replace of the evaporated water to be safe.

@@bieber9478 yeah I always treat what I put in to replace.

Also Life happened and I have found myself living in a tiny space, I have a beta, 2 mini Cories and 5 white cloud minnows (other then the betta they are all under an inch). just to make life interesting my betta tank died spectacularly. I had no choice but to throw him in with the others. At the moment they are all in a 5 gallon marineland, the fish seem to be getting along but the tank is old, plastic and dyeing. Do you think I should get another 5 gallon and a 1 - 2 gallon for the betta (like before) or should I see if I can get a 6-7 gallon tank. Sadly the foot print of a 10 gallon is to big for the tiny dwelling I live in. Any advice would be appreciated

Do you clean the floramax/gravel of these tanks? Beautiful setups by the way!

I never deep clean my gravel in my planted tanks.

I am thinking of getting this tank for my betta but I am scared that he will jump out of the hole for the light, should I be worried?
@pecktec
@pecktec 9 лет назад
Mridini Mehta well all I can say is I haven't had a problem with it. While it could be possible I thing its more likely they would shoot up the side of the tank if it went into panic mode. so you should be ok.

Can I put my swordtail fry in there? Or is the filter bad?
@gerardstephens3278

Would you put a betta in here? I hear the filter isn't good and it gets really dirty.
@pecktec
@pecktec 9 лет назад
I have kept a betta in there since I set it up. I still have it going. I've seen lots of comments about the filter but it's been Working for me. I have always kept plants in it so maybe the tanks without plants had more trouble. It's hard to say what their issue was but I like it.

How did the lilaeopsis m. do with this light? Did it spread, stagnate, die? Thanks!
@pecktec
@pecktec 10 лет назад
It's slowly spreading. Thanks in part to liquid co2 I think.

pecktec Excel? Did you have initial die off or browning? You still have the original light right? Thanks!

Hello Pecktec! I had a question. We have two Fluval Spec 2.6 gallon tanks as well as one 5 gallon. They are all planted tanks and we love them so much! We are newbies and we were wondering if you use Co2 or fertilizers or anything like that? We are having some issues with algae overgrowth. Your tanks are so beautiful and everyone looks so happy. Thank you for your videos.

Thanks I put a little bit of flourish ion in now and then. I have played with liquid co2 but haven't messed with injection.

I've been looking for a small tank for my desk , this looks the biz , very informative and this presentation is tipping me towards this 2.6 fluval , love that you can hide the heater out of the way and just leaving what room there is for aquascaping and the fish . Can I ask though , why is there no aeration , I'm used to seeing tanks with lots of bubbles somewhere in there , or is the water flow all there is too it . Thanks .
@pecktec
@pecktec 9 лет назад
Nodders Yes if there is significant agitation of the water you dont need extra bubbles. Mostly its just for decorations these days if you have a filter attached.

i am thinking about trying one of these guys out. do you have any experience with marine tanks? I had a 12 gal nano cube reef back in the day and was tossing around the idea of making one of these into a pico tank. the only think i can think would be the light output from the led. not sure it would be enough.

Sorry I haven't gotten into saltwater but man you would probably struggle to keep things in balance it this little thing. Of course it would look spectacular if your able to do it.

Oh I got no mom and pop stores down here only Persmart and petco :( Is there any other first that could go in that tank?i already bought mine and have my betta in it and when it cycles I would like to add some type of fish (or just move my betta to another tank and use this one for other fish)
