This was an absolutely EPIC day of fly fishing.
The seemingly endless Eastern Sierra backdrop coupled with the almost unreal looking state fish of California - the Golden trout - ended up being the two ingredients that made this whole trip a complete drool fest.
Ya’ll….I’m in love with fly fishing.

Of course man. I agree, I really think folks would love and appreciate fishing that much more if they introduce a little exploration/adventure into the mix…at ANY level that they’re capable.

I have created a monster.... :) Micah, your setting skills have dramatically improved since we fished the upper kern. your roll casting is so much better. you are loading the rod perfectly. fantastic! and your pure joy of fly fishing is infectious. i feel like a proud father! :) i'll email you seperate from this, but, i want you to focus on your left hand... often called the "hauling hand". Don't follow the rod up and behind you with the hauling hand. keep it in front of you and low. that will allow you to load the rod without the false casts.... and it will be a natural progression to double hauling...which is ultimately necessary for you in windy conditions. -tim

Quite a few years ago, camping with the wife and kids at Saddlebag Lake, I’d read about some tarn pools at the end of the lake. I packed us all in the 8 foot Avon and putted up with a 1 1/2 horse motor. We walked in a mile or so and each caught a Golden. Kids were 4, 7, and 10. A small piece of worm mooched real slow across the bottom simulated the tube worms I saw them eating. Great vid. 😊

Want a epic golden trout?. Consider fishing the lakes Below the Mount Whitney region . There are a series of lakes in this region that were planted with golden trout fingerlings by airplane during the 1950's and 60's. I spent several years working for the State of california (California Conservation Corps) and in my time off got to fish theses regional lakes. There are golden trout in excess of 10 lbs in several of these lakes but there not caught very often as they are cannibalistic feeding only on other smaller trout. Best way to catch one of these giants is using a medium size rapala that mimics a baby golden trout. Goldens have been planted in other lakes over the years but the massive monsters are still in these high country lakes. Anglers tend to fish small lures catching only the smaller size ones not realizing what actually exists in these lakes.

Another cool vodeo. Been to this lake twice before, but never caught goldens there. I guess I'll need to try fly fishing next time. BTW, you can do a full loop from this trailhead/lake, all the way around the ridge to the other lakes you were at in the last video and back down. Thought about doing it as a trail run. Leg burner, lol.

Oh interesting, were you catching Rainbows? I read a study done by the DFG in 2003 showed that primarily a self sustaining population of Golden trout. But it supposedly used to have Brooks and Browns as well… NO WAY. Oh gawd….hahahahhaha no. No I’m good. Backpacking it though sounds AMAZING. Now that, I would do! Bro, pumped for you that you’re learning bow hunting!!! I haven’t hunted California yet, so I can’t give you specific hunting advice for here. But what I can tell you is this: 1. Go to a bow shop and make sure you bow is “tuned”. 2. Usually at a bow shop they have a small range where you can shoot. I would see if they offer lessons on how to shoot your bow. You want to start building good shooting habits now and a good instructor will show you those habits that you can then practice on your own. 3. Shoot your bow! Practice practice practice! Lots of a free bow ranges, just gotta find them! 4. Watch hunters and their hunting journey! I love watching The Hunting Public here on RU-vid. I learn a lot from their content.

Bro, I’m excited FOR you! Come on!!! I’m happy to answer questions. I, plus Tim, use the Garmin Inreach Mini for our maps, Satellite communication with our spouses, and for the SOS feature (link below). That last part can save your life, and if you read Tim’s blog, it literally did 2 months ago for a young man who got bit by a rattlesnake (in 30 years fly fishing rattlesnake territory, Tim has never encountered a snake bite…it’s rare). I couldn’t recommend this enough. The backpacking tent that Dasha and I used on our most recent backpacking only weighs 2.2lbs and can sleep two, and spaciously sleep 1. Link’s below. You’ll need trekking poles for the support. I’ll include a link for the poles we got. I’d also recommend a footprint for underneath the tent. I got our sleeping bags from REI, but if you prefer Amazon or another outlet, I’d just recommend finding one that’s as lite as possible, but is as high quality as possible with a temp rating of at least 20 degrees, that still fits your budget. I’d also recommend a sleeping bad to go underneath. Garmin Inreach Mini - Costs $15 a month to have the SAT service, month by month plan. Make sure to fully update the software on the device and test it before heading out - amzn.to/3TOt6Cy Tent - amzn.to/3eG1Cza Poles - amzn.to/3B4h0gc Footprint - amzn.to/3xap0Lq Sleeping bag - www.rei.com/product/157769/rei-co-op-trailbreak-20-sleeping-bag-mens Sleeping pad - amzn.to/3Rw7BFb

Boom 👉🏻 amzn.to/3v563Z1 I like it too, lightweight, portable, and easy to access. I’d recommend getting some extra carabiners to make it easier to attached to your waist when in its folded position (you’ll essentially just add another carabiner to the included one so it dangles a little farther down your waist). Here’s the ones I bought 👉🏻 amzn.to/3G99Ivq I also found that you’ll likely want to attach a coiled lanyard to the handle of the net and then to your carabiner on your waist in case your net gets snagged on something while walking. I lost my first net that way. (Lanyards 👉🏻 amzn.to/3FNif5w )

@UntilJourneysEnd
@UntilJourneysEnd 2 года назад
Hey John. For some of the places I visit, I don’t want the names to be on a public forum like RU-vid, as my purpose is for people to do their own research and discover these places, just like I did. Just putting the name out there could very likely attract the wrong kind of people to a place like this (I’m not saying this about you). So, with a little research of the Eastern Sierra along the 395, you will eventually find this place and many, many more ☺️

The California Golden Trout is listed as an “imperiled native species” and California's state fish. Why on earth would anyone post something that encourages the taking and then “eating” of an endangered species. Huh?
@UntilJourneysEnd
@UntilJourneysEnd 5 месяцев назад
These Goldens/hybrids are not in their historic range. As with many lakes on the eastern side of the Sierra, Goldens have been planted in many lakes and streams to establish additional populations and fishing opportunities. The California Golden trout you’re talking about, is native to the Little Kern on the south side of the Sierra Nevada. And yes, the fish does not densely inhabit the streams it once did due to the introduction of the Brown trout, and Rainbow trout. But, for the last 50 years or so, we’ve made huge strides in creating fish barriers to cut off access to the most remote areas where the Golden Trout has it’s purest strains. When I do end up fishing these parts of the Sierra, my video and how I educate my viewers will be quite different. But, for the areas where Golden trout have been introduced into non-native ranges, I will always encourage my viewers to tap into their hunter/gatherer roots.
@rickelliott821

@rickelliott821 I appreciate that critique Rick! How I educate my audience is something I’m always working on, and you bring up a good point about the order of things.
@UntilJourneysEnd
@UntilJourneysEnd 5 месяцев назад
@rickelliott821 Well, this is a great topic, but one that I can’t go into detail in just a few paragraphs. So, I will just say this: 1. Nutritional profiles of most grocery store meat doesn’t even come close to wild venison or wild fish. I prefer to kill my own meat, rather than have someone else do it for me. 2. Conservation, hunting, and fishing go hand in hand. Humans and animals are meant to co-exist and benefit from each other. Life cannot exist without death. Some things from the past are never meant to be forgotten. The food industry has in many ways, destroyed what is meant to be our nutrition. Hunting, fishing, and small local farming, gives us what food was meant to be in all it’s nutritional glory.

Fishing locations have always been something to keep somewhat of a secret. Same goes with backpacking locations. I don’t know why people seem to have a hard time searching out there own spots. Also if you listen closely to some videos on RU-vid they sometimes giveaway some sort of detail on whereabouts they are from there you could do your own research on a map to try and find the location or find a different place. These locations are like finding gold and if we found gold who would want to make that public information?
@UntilJourneysEnd
@UntilJourneysEnd 2 года назад
Hey 4aces. I made the decision recently to stop giving specific location information in most of my videos. For two reasons: 1.) I’ve discovered over time that trout fishing in California attracts tons of anglers. Which is great!!! I love that!! However…I wish it were as simple as “all anglers respect fishing regs and fish limits”. But, unfortunately, I’ve been witnessing that not to be the case. And there’s so much more to that discussion, like regulations not always accurately reflecting their specific waters, and knowing when you’re fishing native trout waters. But I digress… Since this channel is a public place, I think it best to keep most location specifics up to the person who truly wants to find these beautiful places. 2. I’ve also realized that sharing location specifics is not what I set out to do with this channel. I want to inspire people to carve their own path. So much of the reward is the journey of discovering a new fishing location or a new hunting ground. I will still include general location information so people have an idea of where to start. But if locals, like yourself, want more info. You can always ask me directly in the comments and I might be able to give you some more tips. But, if this is a deal breaker for you, then no worries. You’ll have to look somewhere else for content. Thanks though for sharing your thoughts. I fully welcome that here.
