Welcome to another video with FlyFishingWithJeff. In today's adventure I am back on my float tube on a small lake near my home in search of bass and big bluegill on the fly. I'm using my 2 and 3 weight fly rods to make the smaller fish feel like larger fish on the line. The smaller the number, the smaller the rod, smaller line, etc.. This, essentially, guarantees that a 10 inch bluegill on a 2 weight rod makes for a true thrill. I feel it's one of the purest ways to catch these big pan fish. The scenery and weather were perfect and the fish cooperated from the first cast to the last ..... so, come along on a float tube journey and remember to hit the like button please. If you have comments leave those in the comment section and I will get back to you with the best answer I can.

Hey Jeff, sometimes I have difficulty casting even a medium sized popper with my 3 weight. Can you go over your leader and tippet system? Thx!

Casting a 3 wt is more challenging for sure; you’ve got to learn to be patient and wait for the line to load behind you. Don’t start your forward cast until you feel the pull of the line behind and even feel some drift with your rod hand(arm moves backwards a bit). To be successful you have to learn to haul with line hand if you aren’t already and the best is to be able to double haul on back cast and then on forward cast thus shortening the line to speed it up. Be patient and it will improve! Jeff

@@jcarmichaelablegood stuff plus you could go ahead and use relatively stiff straight mono as a leader and make it as short as you can get away with. We use tapered leaders on flies because the casting energy dissipates as the line becomes less stiff, more floppy and more air resistant relative to its mass. But with a popper, the danged fly itself dissipates so much energy that the challenge is to get energy to it.

Do you keep any? Those have all been big enough to fry.

Only occasionally.....to be honest, I like pike and on our main lake, anytime I catch a pike in mid 20's I keep those as they are (my opinion) the cream of the crop.....

What line do you use on your 3wt? For the last 12 years I’ve fished 5wt-8wt and never gone below 5. I just ordered my first 3wt and have no clue what line. Awesome video

as easy as it sounds....3 wt line goes with a 3 wt rod/reel; If you look on line and do a little research you will see lots of different 3 wt lines to choose from...my choice is a lower end price of a line as usually I am not trying to cast my 3 wt for a great distance and in turn using the outfit on smaller fish.....

@@jcarmichaelableyah I was just asking what brand and subcat. It’s cool.

And what leader and tippet? I notice you picking them up by the line so it must be stronger than what I am using?
