Fly fishing a pool effectively can require a few different approaches and techniques to get the most out of the water. In this episode I am behind the lens, filming my mate Jared as he tackles a long pool from the tail to the top, using a range of techniques including dry fly, euro nymphing and dry dropper fishing.

Fantastic job. Thanks for putting that together. What are you thoughts on a rod that would cover both techniques? Say a 9ft 6in 4wt ( is this what they call a switch rod?). If I’m not moving slot don’t mind having two, but on a full day or a hike in prefer one. Thanks again.
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing Год назад
Thanks Anthony! Yep absolutely I have a couple of rods that cover both, I have a Hanak Superb XP 9’6” #3 weight that does both dry fly, dry dropper and euro nymphing really well. If you wanted a bit more reach for nymphing at the expense of slightly less accuracy with the dry then a 10’ #3 would work well also. Even a 10’ #2 works well, you can up line the dry fly line to a 3. When I want to do this I just carry a 2nd reel or spool in my pack, 1 for euro the other with a dry fly line. Can also add an ultra light Spey line if you want to swing some small streamers. :)

@@PeachyFlyFishing interesting. I’ve tried a wf 3 on my 3 wt 10 ft (a stalker nymphing rod) It’s ok, but to be honest I can cast a dry-dropper almost equal distance with a euro micro leader. Just not worth the hassle changing up. Typically on the water I’m fishing at the moment I just skip the tails and pools. Might throw a dry dropper on if I’m seeing rises. There small and tight so need to get close anyway! I’m thinking about upgrading my dry fly gear. Have a now ancient loomis gl3 5wt, which has served me well for two decades and still a reasonable kit. Have a nice 3 wt 7 ft for specialised twig water. Both are terrible on light tippets. Really love the control you have with the fighting butt and protection you have with the tips of euro gear. The hanak looks superb, with potential to give me the versatility I’m after for replacing/upgrading the loomis. Note that they are available in shops in Tassie and Vic. Any where NSW stock the range where I could cast? For the $ this would be ‘a couple of decades worth of fishing’ decision and be my stock rod. Sorry for the lengthy msg! Cheers mate, love your work!

I’m not sure if anywhere in NSW stocks the Hanak. I can tell you that it’s a really nice casting rod though, definitely casts a dry fly line much better than most euro rods, and it has excellent tippet protection.

Hey Anthony. I was in a similar boat (even down to the 20 year old GL3 5wt Loomis) and went for a Sage ESN 3wt 10ft. Beautiful rod, excellent for finer tippet but equally good at casting dries. I run a standard 3wt WF line on my reel and just use a mono rig for euro work and then snip off the whole mini rig and change to a tapered leader for dry work. Takes about 1min to change over. I do have other more specific rods for twigwater etc., but use the ESN almost 90% of the time. Fish mainly in tight and gnarly New England streams (Walcha, etc).

Wait you can use 2 flys? I thought that was euro nymphing ? Yes I’m clueless at fishing
@PeachyFlyFishing
@PeachyFlyFishing 10 месяцев назад
G'day Rich! Yes in NSW you can use 2 flies in the rivers and up to 3 in the lakes. The maximum number allowed may vary slightly in different states so check your local states regulations.... ;)

I would suggest much better line control. There's too much slack while he fishes and that resulted in too many missed fish.
