Yes, fantastic! I love it there. I did another trip to this river last July. Just posted the video. It's long but it has some great shots of the river.
Thanks for the comments. My subscribers are rising very slowly so thanks for subscribing! I've got quite a bit of footage for some more Hokkaido videos but I don't seem to get the time to make them! I'll try to do another one in the next few weeks - perhaps from the last day of my trip on the famous Akan River - more big fish lost!
Hi dfw, thanks for watching. Yes, I've done quite a lot of fishing on the main island but with mixed results. Most places are quite heavily fished so it's harder to find the fish than on Hokkaido. Also, you'll need to get a fishing licence from the local fishing cooperative for most places. There are some beautiful places to fish if you don't mind the lack of plentiful fish! Here are some places I've fished and caught some (small) trout. Sho river. Leave the E41 at Shokawa IC. I got a fishing ticket at the off-licence at this lat/long 36.0480483 136.9484337. Fish anywhere along the river above and below Miboro dam. Itoshiro river. Search for Rock Field Itoshiro camp site on google maps. You can fish upstream from the 127 bridge. The camp site sells fishing tickets. There's a catch and release section on a small side branch just upstream of the bridge. Maze river. There's a nice section around Kaore Auto Camping Ground. Tomoe river. See the video about this river on my channel. I got a lot of ideas from a website I found that had an English version. I've added the link to the description of this video. Look for the link to "My Best Streams". Good Luck!
@@ITriedThis Thank you so so much, this is incredibly helpful. The licensure component has been one of the toughest pieces for me to figure out. If the trip does happen I will come back to the post to update you! I am hoping to spend 2 weeks on the main island and 1 in Hokkaido. These videos have been some of the most helpful! I appreciate this channel and your blog a ton.
Question from Ontario Canada is this river stocked or are these trout self sustaining? Also is there a higher than normal nutrient level in the water causing the algae . Here I South western Ontario we have algae blooms in Lake Erie and most rivers and streams way to many nutrients from run of urbanization and other sources .
Hi Nick. I think there's some stocking but also wild trout in this area. Fishing is very popular in Japan but there's no tradition of catch and release. Most places have local fishing cooperatives that stock their local river each year, then charge for people to fish them. By the end of the season the river is totally fished out. It's slightly different in Hokkaido as the population is much lower and there seems to be more catch and release and some naturally sustaining fish populations, some native, but also rainbow and brown trout. I couldn't find a fishing cooperative to pay to fish there and when I asked the locals if I had to pay they said "I don't think so" but nobody seemed to know for sure. I think the weed beds are natural. I've seen similar when fishing the chalk streams in the South of England. There's a natural weed there called ranunculus. The chalk streams are highly prized and managed so there's minimal pollution/run-off and the ranunculus is a natural part of the ecosystem. For example, check out this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FlV8Lgm9IbE.html. I used to regularly fish close to this stretch of the river Frome when I was in England, around the time this video was made. Good memories!
At first I thought that these fish were native Japanese yamame, but then I realised they could be small Rainbow trout still with their parr markings. Now, I'm not really sure! On balance, I'm still leaning towards yamame for the one in the picture. If anyone has a sure way to tell the species, I'd be interested in learning how.
@@ITriedThis in any case, it is interesting. I from argentina and it has particular history with the different species of trout. I hope we can share a day of fishing
@@georgesakellaropoulos8162 Negative, I've seen many that size with parr marks still. It was definitely a rainbow. Too many small black dots to be a yamame.
