Heres another video where I hike to a remote mountain lake, this time in Wales! Snowdonia to be precise, a small lake (or Llyn in welsh) called Llyn Ffynnon Lloer, said to be the highest fishable lake in Wales.
I made the 1 hour trek up the mountain with the hope of catching a wild brown trout on the fly. My dog Orla came along too. This was a tough spot to fish, took some time to work the place out. Absolutely stunning scenery though, an amazing day out.
Fishing permits available via the Ogwen Valley Angling Association

I live quite close and have fished Ffynon Lloer many times - although it's a killer of a walk up there. Hit it on the right day, such as when the heather fly are on, and the fishing can be fantastic - or sometimes, heartbreaking! There are some surprisingly large trout here, some of which like to snack on newts, and they can be found surprisingly close to the edge - casting out as far as you can isn't necessary. Yes, it is fly only. For those who don't fancy the hike, Llyn Idwal on the opposite side of the valley lies in a magnificent cwm, although sadly getting far too busy now, although quieter spots can be found away from the paths. Tight lines...

Hi David thanks for the info and glad you enjoyed the vid. Interesting you mention those bigger trout, I did try a martins minnow for about 15 mins and saw some pretty big ones coming after it. Was actually only fishing for about an hour or so on this session but could have spent all day up there absolutely loved it. Can't wait to go back, you're lucky to live so close. All the best, Niall.

Well done on catching one. Surely the hike is worth it with the fish. The fish is just the icing on the cake. At least it didn't rain.

Thanks mate apreciate it, and yes you're so right the hike alone was well worth it, it's a stunning spot. A fish at the end was the icing on the cake!

Traditionally this lake was fished on opening day of the fishing season, March the first, even with snow on the ground it was possible to catch! It is said that it is because of springs that have a constant temperature upwelling. There was also a fly that was used, cwillan flèche, pillar box red body, wool, no hackle with the iridescent blue of a mallard with a white tip. Lyn Clyd below YGarn might be higher and certainly has trout. As in all these Corrie lakes a wind makes success more likely!

Wow thanks for the info William that’s really interesting to hear. Can’t imagine it’s easy to catch on March 1st but fair play for doing so! Might have to check out that fly, might have a go at tying it. All the best, Niall

Great video. What rod, reel, line weigh weight were you using?
@albionangling
@albionangling Год назад
Thanks mate. Here I was using the 5wt snowbeee classic along with a cheap reel I got off ebay. Wouldn't recommend the reel but the rod is great! Usually go a bit heavier when fishing these remote llyns/lochs/tarns, mainly because its usually quite windy up there! Cheers Niall

Thanks David really apreciate the feedback. Just checked out the book you mentioned, looks fantastic got It on order. Whilst we're based in Yorkshire, I hope to do some more Llyn fishing in Wales, was really blown away by some of the spots I visited. Would be great to go out with a tent and try tick off as many Llyns as possible over a couple of days or something. Good luck fishing Creggenan mate 👍

@@albionangling cheers, if you want to take a tent try Llyn Conlog, however make sure you have a map and that you can navigate, being from Yorkshire you'll appreciate that the conditions on the hills can change at the drop of a hat. Never fished Yorkshire, might have to give it a whirl someday 😀

Trouble is these places are suddenly getting a lot of exposure. It's not good. Most people who seek out these places go because they want to enjoy being alone. Personally, if I hiked all the way up there and saw a couple of anglers it would ruin the experience for me. It's very much a buzz word ' wild ' now. We are not as wild as Scotland. It's VERY hard nowadays to go anywhere in Wales and not see anyone.
@albionangling
@albionangling Год назад
Didn't realise these places were getting so popular, but like you say Jonathan it's sometimes best to keep these spots to yourself. In future videos I think I'll probably not name the lake/llyn/tarn I fish. As much as I'd encourage people to fish these beautiful remote places, we don't want them to become overrun with anglers!
@carlhughes9584
@carlhughes9584 Год назад
@@albionangling It wasn't really targeted at you.......more the so called ' experts ' in the fly-fishing media. You've got Ceri Jones from Fishing in Wales who's made videos and a book recently about Llyns. I just picked up Trout and Salmon magazine, and article from George Barron about a lake in Snowdonia. The article is titled ' Alone ' and he says he wouldn't be happy if another angler was there on the day, so why go and print it in a national magazine with all the details?! These are very special places and would break my heart if they get busy. Wales is not as big and wild as Scotland. It's a true luxury to find a spot to not see anyone. Sorry for the rant.
