I bought myself a new toy last week, a 6 foot long 2wt fly rod. A 6" 2wt fly rod is very small. My usual fly rod is a 7"6' 4wt fly rod, and the fly rod that I use for Murray cod is a 9" 8 wt.
Hi Robbie, I haven’t fished in over 40 years but my father, uncles and friends used to fish the inland creeks and dams on the Atherton Tablelands. Mouth Almighty, freshwater Black Bream and Murray Cod were the order of the day. I lived most of my adult life in Sydney and have now retired on the Central Coast but still love the bush. Your videos are relaxing, humorous and just plain fun to watch. I still love and ride a motorbike too, so was delighted to see your Himalayan a couple of weeks back. Keep up the great work!
Hi Bruce, thanks so much for your kind words mate. I love my Himi. I use to have a Yamaha Stryker, 1300cc. It was a beast, but too nice and clean to take off road, so as a result I never rode it. The Himi is a third of the size but get used about 500% more often.
Impressive way of dealing with the tiger snake. So many people, upon either (a) just seeing the snake, or (b) realizing that it was headed right towards them, would have gone sprinting in the other direction. You were very cool about it.
Thanks Mark. Well I figured that it went into the bushes to get away from me, so coming out to be near me would be kind of counter intuitive. Haha I love snakes and have a healthy respect for them.
@@robbiefishing Yep the TFO Lefty Kreh Signature Series 6' 2wt. Love it on the really small stuff over near Mt Beauty and Bright. Plus the Stimi is my go to fly. Can't leave home without it.
Robbie, I just love these small stream fishing vids... It's a cold damp morning here in Derbyshire and your videos are making me look forward to summer. Keep them coming mate.
Great way to break in your new rod. Perfect set up for walking the tight creeks and through the scrub. I am looking forward to spending time on the water over Xmas. Another ripper video Robbie, thanks for sharing mate.
@@robbiefishing Me too mate. I’m out of form lately though. I couldn’t catch my kids playing their Xbox at the moment but just being out there is enough.
Try lifting your dry line up off of the water as much as possible when the water is flowing toward you, it gives the fly a more natural drift that the fish go crazy for!
@@robbiefishing yea the spot I went today has come down a fair way still not far enough I can get down to try bank but it has recovered nicely I have a few ideas for videos lined up not sure when
Go the 2wt! Yeah, I think it's more suited to those streams than a 4 wt. I have a 6-foot glass 3wt. That length is perfect for these situations. If your's having trouble with the stimulators, try a small royal Wulf or Adams.
I really need to get a small rig like this. I fish lots of tiny creeks as well with a 9' lol. Most of tje time I spend bushwacking through dense oaks standing and fallen, poison oak and every species of plant known to man up to 3' high 😅 those small rods look super fun!
Awsome... lol i finally get to go to the high country this weekend... it has seriously been over a year since I last stepped into a river to go trout fishing... when I fly fish I usually use the royal coachman... its my favourite fly and never fails! Give it a go.
Robbie has a new toy😜What a bunch of fun that rod is and is going to be on future trips. Enjoyed watching how you handled such a short fly rod. Oh yeah a tiger snake sitting at waist height, what could possibly wrong. Well spotted sniper eyes, take care out there. Thanks for sharing Love your work Healthy habits
Great video! Just got a White River Classic SS and a Battenkill II reel today. Looking forward to the journeys, and excitement. Love your semi colon tattoo man! I have one too 😎🤘 ;
G'Day Robbie, You christened your new fly outfit well on that little creek. Short fly rods are great fun. I have a 6'6" 3/4 outfit that I use on tiny creeks and it is ideal for casting a fly into really tight, overgrown places. I usually tie on a Stimulator or Royal Humpy with a light bead head nymph underneath to begin with. If I get plenty of hits on the dry like in the warmer months, I'll take off the nymph but sometimes that nymph comes on and off throughout a session. I have a shorter 6 foot fly rod that I load with a 5wt line. The rod began life as the same earlier mentioned 3/4wt rod but in a moment of clutzfulness I broke 6 inches off the tip. Grown men do weep! My local tackle shop put on a new tip guide and it works well as a super short fly outfit with the heavier line. always enjoy your videos. Cheers and Merry Christmas, Steve
Hi Steve thanks mate. A 6" 5wt sure sounds interesting. Haha I went into a fly-fishing shop in Benalla this week and loaded up on a few different flies. I have a new fly to try out. I foglrget what it is called but it sits half under the water, to help with hookups and is meant to mimick a grasshopper.
@@robbiefishing G'Day again Robbie, There's a type of dry fly called a "Klinkhammer" that is tied so that the hook sits below the surface. Sounds like the new one that you will be trying out. Very curious to see how it works for you. Cheers, Steve
Hahaha😂 whats happened to me a few times is that ive set the hook so hard on a tiny fish that the fish comes flying out of the water and onto the bank😂
Love getting new toys…..treated myself to a small stream fly rod a few weeks back. You have to get used to not trying to cast it like a 9ft rod and try not to cast a long way.
Busy week for me mate I'm now cracking a few cans and have a Robbie catch up 👍🏼 The nymph always does the job 🙂 I don't even fly fish but I have noticed 9 out of 10 times they seem to hit the nymph when I'm watching your vids I might have to learn after the lake I went to today stocked with trophy fish I could see 60-80cm trout everywhere yet they wouldn't hit a thing but anything floating on the surface didn't last long... Then some blokes show up with what they call fly fishing on spinning gear and it didn't take them long but still they said people who fly fish there catch the most 👍🏼 Next trip I do I'm heading to cod waters instead, I think my tackle box looks way more cod friendly anyway hahaha As always keep up the great work mate tight lines 🎣
@@robbiefishing ohh I forgot to mention they were using a clear float the ones you add water to and that is how they were getting cast distance 👍🏼 I have also caught freshwater Herring here with flys that look like bees on my spinning Rod just letting them float down the rapids 👍🏼
A mate love the video just wanted to know what brand of Rod is it been looking for a fly rod in that size but can't find one thanks keep up the good work 👍
Have you ever fished around mount Hotham towards Omeo side it’s beautiful and a lot of platypus haha I live up this side of the hills mind you the water was pretty high yesterday receding now though
Hi Phil, I'm not a great fly fisherman. If I'm not catching trout on a royal Stimulator or a nymph, I use my spinning rod. So my tip is to try those flies.
Hello Mr. Robbie, i just pre order my First fly rod which is 7'6 3wt.. is 3 wt a bad decision for a first time?.. i cant buy the 9' 5wt because the spot where i usually fish is full of trees and bushes..
@@nvrluki7608 Trial and error mate. Try a spot and if it's no good then next time they a different spot. I tried yabbying in a new dam today and caught nothing. It's the best way to learn.
Hu Jim, My leader is no set length, but usually no longer than 5 or 6 feet. In these small streams I have my nymph about 30cm under the dry, sometimes less but not longer.
Great video. I bought a 7’3” 2 weight recently and I’m excited to get out on some high elevation Brook trout streams. What leader do you recommend? Length and diameter? And also are you adding tippet?
Hi Riley, I use a Maxima tapered leader, tapered to 4lb and I usually tie a bit of 4lb Maxima Ultragreen on as a tippet. I hope tgis helps mate. Good luck with your new rod. 👍👍
Hey Robbie I've caught my self 2 rainbows and I've kept them iam just wondering if you would just give me a tip on a how you cook your trout it doesnt have to be 2 detailed just a little comment on how you do it cheers in advance love ya work champ
