Fly Plaid - Why on the LEFT Side?

Only rarely will you see someone wear formal Highland Dress with the Fly Plaid on their right shoulder. It is almost always on the left - why?
The answer is one part practicality and one part a nod to tradition and romance.
The Fly Plaid is purely for show - there is no point in history where this large rectangle of tartan cloth was worn as a functional, practical accessory. It is not large enough to be a blanket or effective as a shawl or capelet; especially since most plaids have one corner permanently sewn into a box pleat to make them look better when the plaid brooch is attached.
The Flay Plaid is merely a dashing nod to the shape and flow of the old Great Kilt (or Feileadh Mòr in Gaelic) - a long piece of cloth which is hand-pleated and wrapped around the body.
From what evidence we have, the Feileadh Mòr could be worn in a number of ways. However one very common technique was to arrange the excess fabric over the shoulder - the LEFT shoulder.
Erik and Rocky discuss and Erik reveals what you may have already guessed is the reason why the fly plaid is traditionally worn over the left shoulder.

I was in Highland Regiment in Canada. We wore our medals on top of our fly plaid under the broach.

I think the fly plaid usually goes on the left shoulder since the sword baldric hangs on the right shoulder, so it can be drawn with the right hand (as seen in my video). If left-handed just reverse which shoulder has each accessory.

One-shoulder cloaks like this have been worn since at least the Iron Age, if not the Bronze Age, generally fastened on the left shoulder, leaving the right arm free. Although I have never seen specific evidence, one would assume that left handers would fasten on the right side. Since a fly plaid is a cut down, decorative version, wear it as it seem convenient to you. The fly plaid, like bagpipes, was made for man, not man for the fly plaid.

Love the videos that you put out to help get us squared away with Highland dress. Your Buchanan Modern Fly Plaid looked great, as I MC'd the inauguration of our Clan Chief in October. Being in the presence of our Chief, many other Chiefs & the Lord Lyon Dr. Morrow, it was pointed out to me that because our Clan has a Chief, the proper side to wear my fly plaid on was the right side, so I moved it. If you're part of an armigerous clan, I guess it doesn't matter what side you wear the fly plaid on. You're correct in another video, the fly plaid isn't fun to wear, always pulling to the back & wants to come around in front of you every time you bend over, so I ditched it as soon as I was done with my MC duties. I had to wear it one more time to MC the black-tie dinner, so I checked out our Chief, Michael Buchanan to see how he was wearing his, and he had it safety-pinned in multiple places (covered in one of your videos). The only way to wear a fly plaid, getting it to somewhat stay in place is to have a second person discretely install safety-pins so that they barely show. Keep up the good work.

+USAKiltsOfficial *I reckon that somebody will come up with a brooch base with provision for a boutonnier on the clip side.* Efficient way to display an artichoke or other thistle blossom - or a Red or White Rose - off the top o' the brooch, rigged up for a _Feiladh mòr_ or a flyplaid on a Prince Carlie.

Generally the dress code is Left side because the cross belt for the sword was on the right should because most are right handed.

I wore a fly plaid in my wedding on my left shoulder, sword in a baldric so it hung to my left hip. I think I looked pretty good and nothing got in the way.

When I used to wear one, I wore the fly plaid on the right side, where the brooch couldn't bang against my bass drone. No one ever said I was doing it wrong.

I wish to honor my father by wearing his pin from his fly plate on my sash when my daughter and I finally visit his homelands in Scotland & England. There will be several full dress, clan dinners and a tattoo. How should I wear it?

I wear a flyplaid and love it, it's just a regal accent to the uniform, it adds an elegance to your appearance that people really notice, especially women.

If it's supposed to hearken back to a great kilt, then...just wear a great kilt. 😉
