My favourite saltwater bss flies in mackerel colours, and white with black grisly hackle.

Barry, very nice tie. I had the privilege of meeting Bill Peabody, the originator of the Flat Wing in in Rhode Island, USA. He also has videos of the tying of this fly. Your tie is almost identical. Bill used less bucktail but it is a clone. This fly is fantastic for Stripers. Your videos are first class. I will make sure and watch more of them. I fish for fresh water trout here in North Carolina but I am a dedicated slat water fly. Stripers, Bonito, False Albicore, Sea Trout, Blues, etc. keep up the great work, Southernboysflies, Pete

Barry, beautiful flatwing! Great tip on the buck tail and waxing the JC. I struggled with buck tail when tying jigs for spin fishing until I read an article on what Bob Popovics uses for his hollow fleye. Now I use it for applications like you did. Was the hackle golden badger saddle? I have a Whiting American unique variant saddle that's sort of a reverse badger, the center is like a light dun and border is almost black. It's so beautiful I hate to pluck the feathers! ;-) I'll tell you Barry, you really inspire me to tie many patterns, I'm definitely trying this one with the materials I have. Hi Joe, Thanks for the kind words it is a badger saddle but you can mix and match colours how ever you will have them, so don't use your unique variant on these most saddle hackle will do. Good luck!

Hi Barry, I just saw this vid; what can I say, superb as usual. I live in the NW USA(Seattle area) and have been tying and fishing flatwings for our searun cutthroat trout in the Puget Sound. This is one of the best flatwing instructional videos I've ever seen. The videography, and the script are very well thought out and the directions are very clear; that coupled with your usual "matter of fact" style really make the pattern approachable even for someone who has never tied a flatwing fly before. Do you tie multi-feather flatwings? I will admit that those still give me trouble and I'm sure watching a video of yours would go a long way toward clearing up a few questions I have. Thank you for this and all of your videos. -ira
