One of the most realistic nymph patterns I have ever seen, and it didn’t use that many materials either! Definitely giving it a try, thanks for the super informative video!

Awesome awesome! I tied some up here in eastern Canada and they sure look real, but one of them looked like a cockroach. I tied 3 with the olive micro tubing. More care is required as the tubing is easily stretchable and can end up smaller segments. Thank you for sharing all.

Beautiful fly! Davie McPhail uses a material he calls organza ribbon (not sure of the spelling) and he gets a very similar effect for the gills. A little easier maybe. Your patience and craftsmanship is wonderful and it shows with your finished fly! Well done.

This is a very innovative fly. I really enjoyed the video. My only concern is the gill material. Since Baetis nymphs are normally in slower moving water, there would be no gill movement like there is in a natural. Either way, it a great job. You are a very thoughtful fly tier. Thanks for sharing your time, your ideas and your tying skills with us.
@HacklesAndWings
@HacklesAndWings 4 года назад
Thank you very much Tom. With the gills on this fly I was more looking for the shape than movement but it would for sure be interesting to try some more supple materials to see if there is a difference in takes. Best regards, Simon

Hi mystery tyer ;-) I wish I knew your name, your voice & production style of video seems Scandinavian, but no matter, fly tying is universal. Very nice pattern, especially the gills. I would think it would work well on a larger scale in a vertical plane for flat bait fish patterns. I don't think I would have the patience to do either. A tyer named Floyd Franke tied an iso nymph that was featured in Fly Tyer magazine a few years ago that you would like. From what I remember he used white floss, a modified cap of a Bic pen, and super glue. The floss is wound up the abdomen over the the stem of the cap, which is placed on the ventral side of fly. Glue is applied to the dorsal side, shell back pulled over and tied down. The floss is severed on the bottom, releasing the pen cap which protects the underlying abdomen from being cut. Easier done than said! Anyway it seems more expedient than weaving, maybe not as much fun. Dirk's Outdoors on RU-vid features some of Franke's other patterns. I didn't realize that Mr Franke had passed away. Another master tyer gone... Thanks for showing your skills, I have subscribed, you're number 201!
@HacklesAndWings
@HacklesAndWings 8 лет назад
Hi Joe, my name is Simon and I am indeed quite Scandivanian, Swedish to be more precise :) Thank you! Yes this would certainly work well for some bigger baitfish patterns as well. Very good idea, would be something worth trying out. Seems like a nice pattern, I will have to dive into Floyd Franke's creations. It is really sad that he passed away. Thank you so much for the comment and subscription, greatly appreciated. The nymph leg technique is great, I think I learned it from Davie McPhail a few years ago.
@joeduca8582
@joeduca8582 8 лет назад
+HacklesAndWings Aha! Just call me Sherlock! Well I discovered your name by going to your web sites. But I noticed the intro before I heard your voice. After seeing the comments it was "elementary" my dear Simon! ;-) lol, watching you manipulate the gills I heard Davie McPhail say "it is a wee bit fiddly but just take your time". He was my first subscription. I Googled classic salmon & wet flies and there he was. In fact one of his subscribers recommended this video for him to watch. So I followed suit. You remind me of Eivind Berulfensen , another great tyer on RU-vid. However I haven't seen anything from him in quite awhile. Thanks for the reply Simon, I'll be watching.

What a masterpiece! But I wish you didn’t speed things up during the demonstration since this is a complicated piece to learn and I would like to see every bit of the process that you went through in its natural speed! This is a piece that I would definitely want to tie but I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to do it unless I sit down with the instructor himself and slowly watch what he is doing! Awesome fly, nonetheless!

I would say this is generic mayfly nymph pattern, especially from the baetis family. Here tied in an olive version but you can tie it in a range of colors and sizes to imitate the naturals in your waters.

Beautiful pattern.... I believe when it comes to tying and fishing nymphs, size and color is all that matters. When Trout are feeding they mouth about everything passing by them.. Depth of the nymph fished is important.. Tying nymphs that keep me at the vise instead of the water are a waste of time..But hey! That's just my opinion

That's a great looking fly, but way too skilful for my meagre fly tying skills. Also definitely not a fly where you want the thread to break as you are tying the whip finish, meaning you would have to start again!
@HacklesAndWings
@HacklesAndWings 8 лет назад
+David R Bellairs Thank you! It is a little tricky fly to tiebut with a little bit of practice I'm sure you can do it. It is a lot easier when using some kind of floss or material that comes in strands. Yeah, breaking the thread is the last thing you want to happen when tying this :) Nano Silk has made this a lot easier though.
@RalphBellairs
@RalphBellairs 8 лет назад
+HacklesAndWings Indeed. I've only just started using Nano Silk about a week ago. It's a bit slippery at first when you are used to Uni, but the strength to diameter is very impressive. Just ordered some 12/0 to go with the 18/0 I've been using.
@HacklesAndWings

@HacklesAndWings
@HacklesAndWings 8 лет назад
+Kento Wakai That's usually due to to friction between the spool and the metal pieces holding it in place. A tiny drop of oil or some dubbing wax tends to do the trick.

Baetis nymphs range from sizes 5 to 12mm approx so yes this one is a little bigger but sometimes it is really effective to oversize your pattern to stand out from the naturals. It also gives much better video with slightly bigger hooks. Thank you for the feedback.
