This is an updated step by step fly tying tutorial of my MEGA-Jerk articulated Pike/Musky Fly pattern. The fly is built from my custom tapered MEGA Jerk brush which forms the body and shoulders for both rear and front hooks. Aside from the Hackle Tail - which is optional, the fly is 100% synthetic, tied relatively sparse, sheds water like a dream, and is a fly you can comfortably cast all day - yet still comes in at 10-11". The heavy wire hooks paired with the large compressed head gives the fly a unique slicing action in the water that I refer to as a Jerk Fly, and allows the fly to show its profile to the fish - triggering the strike.

I just made 4 of these brushes. My 1st rear brush was only 3" of wire length so went with smaller Partridge Abs. Predator 2/0. After tying in tail material, I wrapped the brush and was left with 3/4" left on shank! So, I used another rear brush (4.5" wire length(7.5" total)) and am still left with 3/16" bare shank... Adding "veiling" material will add some forgiveness to this rear fly. I have found that having the brush end where you want on the hook is one of the more challenging aspects of making brush flies. (I now just make a single brush for each fly body and spin a couple of heads on another brush.) After watching video yet again I see I didn't tie in front of tailing material bump but on it. 2nd, I am having a difficult time allowing myself to make "loose wire wraps." Making them spaced apart enuf to get close enough to hook eye, especially on larger hook, leaves me feeling nervous about fly durability. I tried but can't see how loose Gunnar's wraps are. Anyone have any thoughts on this? 3rd and maybe irrelevant, my wire was also .006 vs. GB's .009. Maybe my mistakes will help someone else.

Great looking pattern and design concepts. I saw the swimming video, it looked like my truck when the right front brake failed. Screech! Pulled to the left, wicked! Then your MJ pulled to the right, awesome jerk action. The head material concept made sense. Heck the more I listen the more sense you make to me, starting to understand. Awesome looking fly. I keep a small diamond file on my desk to dull the ends of the wire. It not only helps prevent cutting the thread, it also helps to reduce punctures to fingers when working with wire.

Gunnar Brammer ... Thought I'd mention this and I haven't tried it yet. With regards to your keeled fly tied on the worm hook. Have you looked at the Gamakatsu Jobee Pro Worm Hook? Google the hook name. Captain Hook Discount warehouse carries it. It definitely has some possibilities.

Hey Gunnar, Any particular reason you chose an H.M.H. vise? Those are made in my home State of Maine. I , unfortunately don't have one. I got a Marc Petitjean master vise for Christmas a couple of years ago. I had a Nor-vise I chose for myself. I have been making dubbing brushes for a while with it. They are not as long as yours, but I don't tie flies as large either. The information in your video's require me to watch several times. Thanks for sharing, All the best, Sean

Think u could tie up a smaller one like 4inch total length like 4 of them and I will buy them to test out on some bass lol nice pattern will definitely be trying it out

Great looking fly! Will it fish on a 8 or 9 wt rod since it's mainly all synthetic?

Hey Roger, an 8 wt would be pushing it - you could certainly get it to turn over with a shooting line, but you'd only be looking at perhaps a 30-40 ft cast. A 9wt can handle it just fine - I would recommend a full sinking line for either the 8 or 9, simply because the higher line speeds will help overcome your air resistance while casting. Hope that helps - you can also reduce the bulk in the brush and tie a slightly downsized version - although I'd likely keep the hooks the same, and should make it more friendly for the lighter rods.

Hey Gunnar, could you make a video, or even recommend a video, tying a fly with a similar silhouette and proportions that the mega jerk has but without using a brush? I plan to get set up to make my own brushes eventually but I’d like to try tying a similar fly in the mean time. Thanks

Hey Lane, not sure if there is a video on it....but check out Adaptive Fly's Yard Sale. The fly is built up with High tie/Low tie SF Blend and build a similar silhouette and it a deadly fly! The Tiers name is Matt Grajewski

Sick fly. Does the tear mender/ uv resin head not work as well with the fuzzy fiber?

The Strung Fuzzy Fiber is really coarse and the Tear Mender doesn't soak into the fibers the same way it does with dubbing. The 5 minutes epoxy has been the best solution I've found - it may seem time consuming, but at the same time its nice not having to do a UV top coat over the head. The dubbing head previewed in the previous tutorial still works great as a head, I just don't like how it collapses behind the eyes and created a non uniform silhouette. The Strung Fuzz allows for a bulkier fly compared to the dub heads and still doesn't add any water weight.
