Dubbing brushes have become a mainstay in my tying and designing efforts! They offer endless creativity and create durable, lively, and easy to tie flies. Part 1 of Ep. 6 is all about building large scale dubbing brushes for tying Pike/Musky flies. In this episode I will highlight materials and a handful of material substitutions as well as showcase specific techniques for creating consistent brushes, bulk/wing length ratio and brush hydrodynamics, as well as creating tapered brushes through material density and material substitutions for both single and articulated predator flies.

Yet another informative and entertaining video. I very much appreciate how you not only explain the how but also explain the why. Thank you for taking the time to create this series. I have learned a ton.

Thanks for taking the time to explain your thought process for building a tapered brush. I'm just getting started with this technique and thought I would try one of your kits first, as you tie some fantastic looking flies. Looks like I'm in for lots of fun! Thanks again!

Hey Gunnar, thanks for all the excellent tutorials. You are in a class by yourself when it comes to informative and creative tutorials. Can you tell me how many standard pike brushes you get out of a new bundle of Big Fly Fiber? Your answer could help me to get the proper density in my brushes. Keep up the great work.

Thanks Gunnar - great video, looking forward to the one on trout/bass size brushes! Not ready for really big flies yet as I am just getting past the idea that a 3 inch fly is huge :-) Got the Fleye Design book as you suggested and been fishing 6 inch flies for bass - doing well on the bass with lots of bonus northerns and walleyes thrown in. Just finished making a "dubbing brush bench" and plan on tying a bunch of the larger articulated pike flies this winter. Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hank

Hey Gunnar. Thank you for all the great videos. I just got the brush maker and would love to try out tying the Mega jerk. Please do make a new video of this as you mentioned, as it looks like that the current version is quit different from when you did the first video of the mega jerk. Hope you will have a fantastic 2018 to. All the Best

If you want a cheaper alternative to dubbing wax, use a cross country ski wax. Or even bee's wax. If you know a plumber, or a Home Depot, get a toilet bowl wax ring.

I wonder if you use a split straw in the blank sections,that might keep them separated.

If you move the table out of the way will that prevent the material from bunching up on it's self

which kind of big fly fiber is better ,straight or curled?
@Gunnar_Brammer
@Gunnar_Brammer 6 лет назад
I've used both, and honestly think the usable quantities are the same for this application....although if you go with the straight you can get fibers about 2 inches longer for building slightly larger brushes

Nice to see, but White over White Table with to much light .. Hard to see. All what we need now is a little Color Help. i mean.. Perch i use SLF in Color xxx and BFF in Collor X etc. that i think help to start to make cool Color combination..

Good video and nice to see your brush method. I have been watching your pike fly videos and find them interesting and helpful. Sadly that brush tool looks kinda junky and poorly designed.
